Chapter 272: 272:How Dare You? 2
The moment the battle erupted, every noble in the Capital was alerted.
And how could they not be, when the clash was on such a scale that it sent deep shivers through their bones and awakened an old sense of dread.
Leaving aside the Dukes who stood at the peak of Master rank, all the others were nothing more than frail and gaudy nobles. In front of such terrifying might, they could be crushed like insects without even realizing it.
At first, they thought Simon would handle everything.
In fact, many of them even supported the idea of ending this farce as quickly as possible so they could return to earning money. After all, they were partners in the crime as well.
But as the explosions continued without stopping, unease crept into their hearts.
“No… we can’t go on like this.”
“What if he loses?”
“That monster losing?”
“Are you insane?”
“I am very sane. It’s a very tiny possibility, but we still need to act.”
“But…”
“Shut up, idiots!” Duke Longburn screamed, his face pale. “Can’t you understand the situation? If Simon dies under Baron Blanks’ hands, then do you even realize what kind of monster that guy is, someone who beat another monster?”
“We are doomed… We are really doomed.”
Panic spread through the hall like wildfire.
With that realization, the nobles rushed to the King’s chamber and demanded an audience. Their voices echoed again and again until the guards could no longer ignore them.
The king who seemed to be dead asleep was forcefully dragged out in pajamas. He didn’t even bother to change.
After repeated cries and relentless pressure, the King finally agreed to send his men to stop the battle.
As his subordinates moved to carry out the order, the King shouted in rage.
“Useless… useless!”
“All of you are useless!”
“Afraid of a tiny Baron from some backwater land.”
“How can you even call yourselves nobles?”
“You disturb my good sleep just because you are scared of a noble wrecking you.”
“BASTARRDDDDDDDDD!”
“You don’t deserve to be nobles. I will strip you of everything!”
His voice echoed through the court as his anger spiraled out of control.
Then, amidst his growing hysteria, the doors of the courtroom slowly opened.
A deep silence fell over the hall.
Every noble turned toward the entrance at the same time.
They saw Lord Baltar and Lord Auster walking inside.
And behind them followed a man with an unfathomable presence.
He was tall and lean, yet broad shouldered. His whitish hair contrasted sharply with his bluish eyes, which calmly scanned the entire courtroom. His steps were steady and unhurried, yet each one seemed to press down on the air itself.
The nobles had been prepared to pounce on him the moment he appeared.
But the instant they truly saw him, their courage vanished.
Fear rooted them in place.
For a brief moment, some of them even wondered how such a handsome man could exist, and how someone with such calm features could carry such a cold, heavy presence.
It was as if the gods had poured all their blessings into this single man and deprived everyone else.
Cheating.
This was absolute cheating.
Anger flared in their hearts, but none of them dared to speak.
Then suddenly—
“It’s you!”
The silence was shattered by a loud shriek.
The King stood up abruptly and pointed at the man with a trembling hand. His face was twisted with rage as he grabbed a wine glass and hurled it forward.
“How dare you threaten my Royal Authority by disturbing my sleep?” Mark screamed angrily.
He then grabbed a glass and threw it while screaming,”And on top of that, how dare you disturb my peace!”
The glass shattered loudly against the floor.
“????”
Hearing the King’s words, everyone’s eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.
They stared back and forth between the King and the man standing calmly in the center of the court.
Threaten Royal Authority?
Disturb his peace?
The hall was filled with shock, confusion, and disbelief as the weight of the situation slowly sank in.
We called you to imprison this guy,not to hold him accountable for disturbing your sleep.
Ethan paused for a moment, not knowing what to say.
Despite simulating various scenarios in his mind, he never expected to be accused of disturbing someone’s sleep.
Seeing him silent, Mark slammed his old and frail fist against the throne.
“Why are you silent now?”
“What are you staring at?”
“Are you mute?”
“Can’t you even speak?”
Ethan almost flinched as the barrage of words flew at him one after another before he could react. His jaw tightened, and a thick vein bulged on his forehead. The pressure in the hall grew heavier by the second.
Thankfully, Auster stepped forward.
“Your Majesty, please calm your anger,” Auster said, bowing his head. “We should give Sir Ethan a chance to speak.”
Mark turned his sharp gaze toward Ethan and waved his hand impatiently.
“Just speak quickly. I don’t have much time to waste thinking about this.”
Ethan took a slow breath and bowed.
“Your Majesty, I request you to please take a look at the western side regarding illegal slave trading.”
The moment those words left his mouth, the expressions of everyone in the hall froze.
A strange silence fell.
’Damn… he wants to hit our lifeline.’
Duke Keeves stepped forward with a cold face.
“Do you even know what you are saying?” he asked.
“What is illegal about it?” Duke Keeves continued. “These people failed to pay their taxes during the war. They are duty bound to be turned into slaves.”
“How could they pay when their property and houses were destroyed?” Ethan rebuked angrily. “Their land was burned, and their families were displaced.”
Before Duke Keeves could respond, another noble stepped forward.
“It doesn’t matter what excuses they have,” he said coldly. “In times of national crisis, sacrifices must be made.”
“Yes,” another added quickly. “Not everyone can hide behind their lands like you, Baron Ethan. We risked our lives on the border. That is why Ruthiana is still standing.”
Duke Longburn stepped forward and pointed at Ethan.
“Every noble has contributed to the war except you!”
Ethan’s expression twisted in disbelief.
“What do you mean I didn’t contribute?”
He clenched his fists and spoke loudly.
“As far as I know, among all the nobles, I have paid the highest tax in the past few years. I also sent my men to rebuild roads and villages.”
“That’s just your own claim,” another noble scoffed. “Where is the proof?”
