The gold nib touched the white parchment with a quiet scratch.

Calista held the pen between her fingers, drawing each letter with care. On the blank line beside Founder & Proprietress, she wrote her name: Calista Vesper.

She set the pen down on the mahogany table and let out a long breath. Her hands rested over the ivory folder in her lap, her eyes drifting toward the purple court seal beside it.

"Fourteen million eight hundred thousand dollars..." Calista whispered as she looked up at Evren. "You really paid all of that in cash just to clear fake liens on my family’s garden?"

Evren pulled his phone from his robe pocket, glancing at the banking notification that had come through while he was reviewing the filings on seventy-eight:

[APEX NATIONAL BANK - UNRESTRICTED LEVEL-ZERO SOVEREIGN]

[OUTGOING WIRE SETTLEMENT CONFIRMED]

[PAYEE: IMPERIAL MUNICIPAL COURT (JUDICIAL ESCROW)]

[PURPOSE: COMPLETE SATISFACTION OF LIENS - ESTATE OF HOUSE VESPER]

[DEBIT AMOUNT: $14,800,000.00 USD]

[SETTLED: 10:15 PM]

Down in the private lounge an hour ago, the System had already logged the return in his vision the moment the funds left his account:

[HEROINE #3 INVESTMENT CONFIRMED: CALISTA VESPER (ANCESTRAL DEBT CLEARANCE)]

[QUALIFIED EXPENDITURE: $14,800,000.00 USD]

[1,000x GLOBAL MULTIPLIER APPLIED]

[REBATE DEPOSITED: +$14,800,000,000.00 USD ($14.8 BILLION USD) -> SYSTEM SOVEREIGN VAULT]

Evren locked the screen and slipped the phone back into his pocket, keeping his thoughts to himself.

"The wire cleared at ten-fifteen," Evren said, meeting Calista’s gaze. "Money comes and goes, Calista. Your family’s dignity doesn’t. You don’t owe the empire a single copper."

Mikay picked up the signed authorization page, checked the signature, and slid the sheet into an insulated dispatch tube. He pulled a portable scanner from his briefcase, ran the lens over the document, and sent the encrypted transmission straight to Attorney Sean Cole’s legal queue.

"The digital scan has reached the capital team," Mikay said, latching the tube into his case. "The hard copy will be stamped at the Commerce Registry the second the clerk’s window opens at eight tomorrow morning."

Amber leaned forward from the armrest of the couch. "What about the twenty million in operating capital? Can we fund the company tonight?"

"Starlight Pharmaceuticals doesn’t have a bank account yet," Mikay answered, adjusting his glasses.

"The corporate charter was drafted tonight. Under banking regulations, opening a new commercial operating account requires the Founder to appear in person with the certified corporate articles, her biometric verification, and the company seal."

Mikay looked toward Evren. "Once the Commerce Registry stamps the filings at eight tomorrow morning, the bank can officially open the corporate account and link the conservatory under it."

Evren nodded, making the call without hesitation.

"Then we split up in the morning," Evren said. Amber, you and Mikay take Calista to the Imperial Central Bank at eight-thirty. Open Starlight Pharmaceuticals’ commercial account, present the court certificate to wipe Vance’s old debt off their records, and wire the twenty million straight into the new company. Make sure Calista gets her executive cards and whatever personal items she needs."

Amber gave a confident nod. "Consider it done."

"Walter’s boys will provide the armed escort for your car," Evren added, turning toward the doorway. "Zephyra and I will take the High Council."

Zephyra pushed off the doorframe, a cold smile touching her lips. "Caldwell thinks he’s walking into an easy ambush."

"Let him think whatever he wants," Evren said, standing up from his armchair. "Get some sleep, everyone. Tomorrow is going to be a long day."

—

The next morning, at eight-thirty.

An armored SUV pulled away from the subterranean garage of Meridian Tower, flanked by two tactical escort trucks carrying Guild Master Walter’s iron-shield guards.

Through the tinted glass of the SUV, Calista looked back toward the entrance, holding her mother’s music diary in her lap beside Amber. Evren stood by the garage gates, raising a hand in a quiet nod as the convoy turned toward District 1’s financial center.

An hour later, at nine-thirty.

A light fog drifted between the massive stone pillars of the Grand Citadel.

Dozens of armored guild convoys, military transports, and aristocratic limousines lined the perimeter boulevard under the watch of imperial sentries in full plate armor.

The large marble plaza outside the Citadel was crowded with guild masters, division commanders, and council magistrates arriving for the National Defense Plenary Assembly.

Inside Apex’s black towncar parked along the plaza curb, Evren buttoned his tailored charcoal suit jacket.

Beside him in the backseat, Zephyra sat with her hands resting over her knees, wearing a dark high-collared shirt and fitted combat trousers beneath her long slate-gray trench coat. The chill morning air drifted through the cracked window.

Evren glanced at her hands, noting the still posture of her fingers. Reaching across the leather seat, he took her right hand in his, checking the pulse of mana flowing through her wrist.

Her skin was warm, and the flow was smooth and steady, without a trace of the old shadow tremors.

Zephyra didn’t pull away. Her fingers curled around his palm, squeezing back with a quiet, rare warmth in her dark violet eyes. "My conduits are completely clear, Evren," she murmured, though she made no move to let go of his hand. "You don’t need to check on me every morning."

"Habit," Evren smiled.

"Keep it," Zephyra replied, a small smirk touching the corner of her lips before she released his hand.

Evren opened the door and stepped out onto the cold stone pavement. Zephyra followed right beside him, stepping close to his side. She reached up and straightened the collar of his suit jacket, her slender fingers lingering for a second against his lapel before smoothing the wool down.

"You’re representing Apex today," Zephyra said in a low voice, looking up at him behind dark sunglasses. "Can’t have the Chairman looking like he rushed out of bed."

Evren looked down at her, amused. "Is that the Chief Shadow Guardian talking, or something else?"

"Both," she replied without blinking, a subtle spark in her violet eyes.

Halfway across the plaza, a gilded limousine came to a stop before the grand staircase.

The door opened, and Elder Brandon Caldwell stepped out onto the red carpet.

The portly council judge wore crimson velvet robes trimmed in gold embroidery, flanked by five wealthy merchant lords in fine silk coats. Clutched firmly in Caldwell’s right hand was a thick dossier tied with braided gold cord.

Caldwell paused on the lower step, adjusting his embroidered collar. He looked toward the guild masters gathered near the entrance with a wide, triumphant grin, laughing with the merchant lords beside him like a man who already owned the city.

A few steps behind them, Silas Drake walked past with four Solar Crown vanguards. Drake glanced at Caldwell’s golden dossier, his jaw tightening with open contempt before he looked away and climbed the steps.

Zephyra leaned slightly closer, her shoulder brushing Evren’s arm as they walked together toward the staircase.

"Look at him," Zephyra murmured, her voice flat. "He thinks he’s about to carve up House Vesper for breakfast."

"Confidence makes the fall much louder," Evren replied.

Zephyra tilted her head toward him, her lips curving with dark humor. "If that fat judge tries to raise his voice at you in the chamber, say the word. His shadow won’t leave the room with him."

Evren let out a quiet chuckle. "We let the law choke him first. If he survives that, you can have whatever’s left."

High above the plaza, the bronze bells in the Citadel bell tower began to toll, their deep sounding chimes rolling across the stone courtyard.

Ten o’clock had arrived.

Evren and Zephyra walked side by side up the wide marble stairs, passing through the towering bronze double doors into the Grand Citadel.

The High Council amphitheater was vast and imposing.

Evren led Zephyra down the central aisle toward the front sovereign row, taking their seats in the reserved box assigned to Apex Conglomerate.

Directly across the aisle, Elder Brandon Caldwell settled into his plush front-row chair, placing his gold-corded petition squarely on the desk before him.

He caught Evren’s eye, his round face spreading into a condescending grin. Beside him, the five merchant lords exchanged amused glances, whispering behind their gloved hands.

Evren leaned back in his chair with a calm, unbothered expression, meeting Caldwell’s stare with cold indifference.

At the center of the raised dais above the floor, Grand Arbiter Raymond Kincaid stepped up to the massive black iron bench.

The Supreme Commander wore his dark imperial uniform. His weathered face looked like carved granite under his gray hair. His sharp, hawk-like eyes swept across the crowded room, instantly bringing complete silence.

Kincaid picked up the iron gavel.

CLANG!

The strike echoed through the amphitheater like a thunderclap, snapping the final murmurs into dead silence.

"The National Defense Plenary Assembly is officially in session," Kincaid’s deep voice boomed through the chamber. "Before we address the frontline defense allocations for the impending continental rift convergence, the bench has received an emergency expedited motion."

Kincaid picked up a docket sheet, his eyes narrowing as he read the title.

"The chair recognizes Elder Brandon Caldwell," Kincaid announced, looking down toward the front row. "Present your petition."
