Chapter 97: A Man of Extreme Fortune

  • Next Chapter

A simple physical kill could not end a ghost domain. For entities like ghosts, the concept of death simply did not exist.

This was a problem. In ten minutes, the hole would compress the entire building to the size of a ball. No matter how many times Gao Tian resurrected inside, the immense gravity would instantly crush him into meat paste.

The most troublesome aspect of this ghost domain was its absolute spatial isolation. Once inside, nothing could escape—not even the Mirror Ghost or the Black Card.

Right now, Gao Tian seemed to be dominating Ghost Cave. In reality, as long as Ghost Cave dragged the battle out, it would ultimately win.

However, Gao Tian did not panic in the slightest.

The death toll in the Jinhai Building was still rising, having already surpassed three hundred. His Fortune was skyrocketing today; no matter what he did, he was guaranteed to win.

If he could not kill Ghost Cave, he would try to imprison it and see if that would also contain its ghost domain.

The first thing that came to Gao Tian's mind was the Urn.

The Urn imprisoned ghosts by forcing them into a game. However, the Urn in his hand already contained the Shattered Face Ghost. To capture Ghost Cave, he would have to release it first.

Fortunately, he still had the Supernatural Die. If he rolled a two on this Supernatural Item Old Zhao had given him, he could duplicate an existing item, and the replica would spawn in its initial state.

The negative effects of the Supernatural Die were just as intense. Out of its six faces, three triggered negative outcomes. Rolling a one meant instant death, bypassing any Supernatural Item's resurrection effect.

No one of sound mind would dare use this Supernatural Item. But Gao Tian's Black Tie and the Supernatural Die formed a perfect combo.

His Fortune today was terrifyingly strong. As long as he firmly believed he would roll a two, he would definitely roll a two. This was undeniable, extreme luck.

Gao Tian turned his head and saw the pale cloth face of Ghost Infant lunging toward him. He simply uttered a flat, "Scram." A massive piano fell from the sky and smashed heavily into Ghost Infant's face the next second, knocking her senseless and sending her flying away.

The three of them were still in free fall, dropping from the fifth floor to the fourth. Under the compression of the outer ghost ring, the entire Jinhai Building was edging closer and closer to total collapse.

He had stored the Supernatural Die in the Mirror World, and he had dropped his original mirror back in the restroom.

Mid-fall, Gao Tian casually snatched at the debris swirling through the air beside him and caught a Small Women's Dressing Mirror.

His luck was truly excellent. He had managed to snag another one right here.

He immediately activated his Mirror Ghost ability, retrieved the Supernatural Die from the glass, and dropped it into his own hand. Still plummeting, Gao Tian tossed the die upward. It spun three times in the air before landing perfectly back in his waiting palm. He didn't even have to open his hand to know he had won.

It was a two.

The Supernatural Die's effect activated, duplicating the Urn. The replica spawned completely empty, ready to contain another ghost.

After the effect triggered, the two pips on the face of the Supernatural Die shattered instantly. Each side of the die could only be used once; a used number would never come up again.

Clutching the empty Urn, Gao Tian scanned his plummeting surroundings, searching for Ghost Cave.

Where had that ghost run off to after getting pelted by stone pillars, shattered walls, and long tables?

It had to be nearby. Hurry up and show yourself.

Just as Gao Tian searched, he spotted a black speck directly above him, rapidly closing the distance. The empty cavity in Ghost Cave's head was wrinkled into a tight knot.

What a coincidence. He had just been looking for Ghost Cave, and now the entity was dropping right out of the sky.

Gao Tian immediately activated the Urn's ability, ready to drag Ghost Cave into the game. "I told you, this is the price of pissing me off."

Just as he and Ghost Cave were about to be pulled into the game, Ghost Cave suddenly transformed into a blood-stained doll. It was Ghost Infant's substitute. At the exact same moment, Ghost Cave reappeared a hundred meters away, having swapped places with Ghost Infant.

Watching Gao Tian willingly face Ghost Cave and open a gray box, the distant Ghost Infant had instinctively sensed that something was wrong. A veteran of countless battles, she had instantly activated the Substitution Doll, forcibly swapping her own position with Ghost Cave's.

Under the Urn's effect, a Fierce Ghost's Killing Rule was rendered useless. However, the Substitution Doll was a Supernatural Item from Ghost Infant's days as a ghost hunter, so it could still be activated.

"Ghost Cave, there's something seriously wrong with this guy!

"His luck is absolutely outrageous. Every single time we attack him, it gets interrupted for some inexplicable reason! But whatever he tries to do, he pulls it off effortlessly. He's fallen from the eleventh floor to the fifth, and not even a single hair on his head is out of place!"

Ghost Infant was no fool. She was starting to realize exactly what was going wrong. "The Memory Ghost must have done something. He's playing with us.

"Is his true ability... luck?"

Gao Tian coldly cut Ghost Infant off. "Still worrying about others? You should take a look at your own situation.

"I finally understand how you died back when you were ghost hunters. Did your own stupidity kill you?"

Gao Tian had opened the Urn with the intention of capturing Ghost Cave first. Thanks to Ghost Infant's sudden interference, his opponent for the game had abruptly shifted to her.

Not that it mattered. He would simply eliminate Ghost Infant first and then turn his attention back to Ghost Cave.

The end result would be exactly the same; there was just a minor bump in the road to get there.

This was Gao Tian's absolute confidence. He was a man of extreme fortune, blessed by the heavens. No matter how many twists and turns occurred, the outcome of anything he set his mind to was already set in stone.

Bleeding from her empty eye sockets, Ghost Infant stared at Gao Tian in creeping terror.

She couldn't understand why this was happening.

Both she and Ghost Cave were top-tier fighters of the Galan Society, and they were fighting inside Ghost Cave's own ghost domain. So why were they the ones being completely dominated by this nameless, unknown ghost?

Their opponent was no longer taking the ghost domain seriously at all. Not only was he not running away, he was actively trying to kill them.

Calm down, she told herself.

When she had first chased him to the Jinhai Building, the Memory Ghost had clearly shown a flash of panic on his face, even though he had hidden it well.

When exactly had the tide of battle completely turned?

Now, the Memory Ghost's face held nothing but arrogance and absolute confidence. He was looking down on the two of them with the relaxed attitude of a guaranteed winner.

Was it because they had allowed the Memory Ghost to escape into the Mirror World?

No. If his ability was that easy to trigger, he wouldn't have been afraid of her and Ghost Cave in the first place.

It was—

She remembered the exact moment the Memory Ghost had warned Ghost Cave.

"Stop killing people. It's for your own good."

At the time, Ghost Cave had naturally brushed off the words of a mere nobody.

But ever since that moment, the Memory Ghost's Fortune had become an unstoppable juggernaut, crushing anything and everything in its path. An impossibly bizarre string of extreme luck had shielded him ever since, and nothing could break through it.

In those brief seconds of free fall, Ghost Infant pieced together the clues. By pure intuition, she actually managed to deduce Gao Tian's true ability—the more people that died around him, the better his luck became.

Ghost Infant wasn't entirely certain her theory was correct, but she had to pass this critical intelligence on to Ghost Cave. They couldn't afford to drag this battle out any longer. Gao Tian's ability was fully active, and the death toll in the Jinhai Building was only going to rise. She couldn't even begin to imagine how high this bastard's extreme luck would stack if they let it continue.

"Ghost Cave, you—"

Ghost Infant opened her mouth, but before she could shout the warning, she was forcibly silenced.

Gao Tian stared back with a frosty expression. "Still worrying about others? You should worry about yourself.

"Forget about Ghost Cave. Our game has already begun."

The Urn had selected the game: Old Maid!

The rules were simple. Gao Tian and Ghost Infant were each dealt twenty-one playing cards.

Twenty of those cards were normal suits and numbers. However, one Joker was mixed in.

Both players would take turns drawing a card from their opponent's hand. The first person to draw the Joker would be the winner.

Ghost Infant opened her mouth again, still desperately trying to relay the critical intelligence about his Fortune to Ghost Cave.

But the game had already begun. A thin layer of pale ash swirled around the two of them. Ghost Infant realized that none of her sounds could escape the ash; she was completely cut off. Her entire world had been reduced to just herself, her opponent, and the game at hand.

Her teammate was right in front of her, yet she had been entirely isolated. Ghost Infant hadn't felt this kind of helplessness in a very long time.

The last time was back when she was still among the living, right before her death.

The forty-two cards were quickly dealt to Gao Tian and Ghost Infant.

Ghost Infant forced herself to calm down. She scrutinized the game in front of her, trying to find a loophole.

The Supernatural Item the Memory Ghost had deployed was incredibly unique. Ghost Infant could feel that every single one of her Killing Rules had been completely suppressed. She couldn't kill her opponent physically, either; even the slightest hostile movement would invite the Urn's punishment.

However, this was not a game of pure luck. There was a loophole.

Ghost Infant quietly tested her restrictions and discovered that a portion of the Supernatural Items she was carrying could still be used normally within the game.

That meant the rules of the game could be bent to a certain degree.

Ghost Infant slowly raised her hand, and a small Blood-Stained Notebook materialized in her grasp. "I want to modify and rearrange the sequence of events."

She spoke the words in a voice so quiet that only she could hear them, her eyes locked on Gao Tian.

Gao Tian had noticed the eerie notebook in Ghost Infant's hands as well. At first, he didn't grasp what she was doing, but in the next second, he noticed something bizarre—

Normally, the twenty-one cards in his hand should have consisted of twenty ordinary playing cards and one Joker.

But at some point, his hand had transformed into twenty Jokers and only a single ordinary playing card.

This was—

Gao Tian immediately realized that this was some sort of effect triggered by Ghost Infant's Blood-Stained Notebook.

The item didn't have the power to outright change the rules of the game and declare him the loser, but it could drastically reduce his chances of winning.

Now, the probability of the Ghost Card being drawn from Gao Tian's hand had skyrocketed from one in twenty-one to twenty in twenty-one.

Things were looking grim.

If it had been anyone else with ordinary luck, this would have already been a death sentence.
