Chapter 513: Promises

The doctors were killed, not because they did something horrible to Xiang Nan. If anything, they resisted her seduction. The only one who was charmed was Director Qi. He was the reason why the ritual was still ongoing.

“But is it October 16th or 17th?” Lin Wan ‘Er frowned as she looked at the recorder that had stopped working. Yi Zhenliang’s recording mentioned that October 16th was a special date. It was repeated. All the men involved with Xiang Nan died on that day. It should be the date the ritual started.

However, the mad nurse’s clue pointed to October 17th. This one-day difference would dictate their fate. Once the clock struck twelve, it would be October 16th.

Jiang Cheng took out the mad nurse’s letter. He opened it and noticed a tiny difference. However, the difference was fatal. The number 7 in the letter morphed to 6.

Once he closed the letter, Jiang Cheng knew where the problem was. A few seconds later, Lin Wan ‘Er whispered, “It’s Wang Changguo.” Wang Changguo found the mad nurse’s letter. He entered the nurse’s room alone. Jiang Cheng didn’t think the nurse would trick them. After all, she was a victim too.

After Jiang Cheng calmed down, he realised there were many suspicious details surrounding Wang Changguo. Newbies had a high fatality rate, but Wang Changguo somehow survived. He even volunteered to join Jiang Chang and Lin Wan ‘Er to look for clues. That didn’t feel like him. He probably wanted to find the chance to destroy the evidence. Plus, the ghost hadn’t shown up for a long time already. The reality was that the ghost was already among them. It didn’t matter when Wang Changguo was swapped. The important thing was to notify their teammates at the hospital… if they were still alive.

“We need to hurry. We don’t have time.” Jiang Cheng shoved the radio into a cloth bag found behind the television set and carried it with him. They didn’t encounter anything when they left Zhang Zhaowei’s neighbourhood. This was not a good thing. The ghost didn’t go after them because it had more crucial things to do.

Jiang Cheng took out his phone. He thought about it. He didn’t call Kui Yi, but Yu Yu. When the call connected, all that was heard was a weak wind sound. It sounded like someone had stuck their mouth to the speaker.

Hearing that, Jiang Cheng sighed in relief. “Yu Yu?”

“Mr Jiang, is it really you?” Yu Yu gasped in surprise. However, she quickly quieted down.

“How are things on your side?” Jiang Cheng asked. Jiang Cheng didn’t put his guard down. After all, he couldn’t tell if he was talking to a human or a ghost. He didn’t dare to reveal too much information.

“Mr Jiang, I’m with Cao Yang,” Yu Yu whispered. “We’re hiding inside one of the sickrooms.”

“Where are Kui Yi and Wang Changguo?” Jiang Cheng was more concerned about that.

Yu Yu lowered her voice further. Her voice trembled. “Mr Jiang,” she began. “I was about to tell you that. We saw Kui Yi. He left the morgue alone. Wang Changguo wasn’t with him. We suspected there was something wrong with him, so we watched him from afar. He didn’t look like… he saw us.” Yu Yu added, “We also noticed that Kui Yi didn’t use the elevator. Cao Yang saw that he had left from the stairwell.”

Jiang Cheng knew the hospital's layout. The elevator was the only way to access the morgue in the basement. The stairwells were sealed off. If Yu Yu weren’t lying, the Kui Yi they saw was probably the ghost.

Not long ago, the man showed Jiang Cheng his scaly arm. Jiang Cheng felt sad because he lost a huge business opportunity.

“Keep going.” Jiang Cheng’s even voice calmed Yu Yu down. “We heard footsteps and realised Kui Yi went to the sixth floor. After the footsteps disappeared, we went to check. The previously closed door was open. It was Room 624! We found a corpse inside.

“Mr Jiang,” Yu Yu uttered quickly, “The body has no head!”

“It’s Zhao Ru, right?” Jiang Cheng asked.

“Yes. It was the nurse you were familiar with!” Yu Yu was scared, but she tried to tell the truth. It looked like the ritual had started. Based on known information, the thing inside Xiang Nan would start by killing her children and then her husbands. This was the ritual’s request.

Jiang Cheng planned to seek out Zhao Ru and tell her the truth. If she didn’t believe him, he could at least detain her to stop the ritual. However, it was too late. The ritual had started. The ghost’s next target was Director Qi.

It was too late for a cab. Jiang Cheng and Lin Wan ‘Er hijacked a red car. Thankfully, they had good memories. It was not hard for them to find their way back to the hospital. Lin Wan ‘Er raced through the streets so quickly that Jiang Cheng felt like vomiting. She shot past several red lights. Jiang Cheng kept in touch with the teammates at the hospital.

“When you come back, be careful. Things are off here.” Yu Yu seemed to have moved to look around her. Then, she returned to whisper. “The lights around the hospital are out. Even the streetlights. The place is so dark. We can barely see anything.”

“I know.” Jiang Cheng reminded her. “You need to be careful, too. If you see Director Qi, you have to protect him. If he dies, our mission in this world will fail.”

“Also,” Jiang Cheng took a deep breath. “No matter who calls after this, do not expose your location. I will not ask for it either.”

“Mr Jiang.” Yu Yu stifled a sob. “You… will come back, right? I know you are an amazing man. Please don’t leave me behind. I’m still young. I don’t want to die…

“I can give you my everything. I have some savings. I can be your girlfriend like Miss Lin. I’ll do anything you ask!” Yu Yu pleaded. “I will not tell Miss Lin or disrupt your life. Please don’t leave me behind!”

Before Jiang Cheng could react, someone snatched his phone away. Lin Wan ‘Er held the steering wheel with her left hand and held the phone with her right. She placed it between herself and Jiang Cheng, so they could both hear it.

“Hello, Yu Yu.” Lin Wan ‘Er stepped on the pedal, and the old car zoomed past another red light. “What was that promise I heard earlier?”
