Nightmare Apostle
Chapter 2142 - 1175: Injustice_7
"Don’t worry about me, I’m fine. I slept a bit after dawn and just got up not long ago, but..." Ye Zheng paused.
"Nobody came to look for us this morning?" Yang Xiao asked what was on Ye Zheng’s mind.
"No, I find it strange too. Could it be that nobody died last night?" Ye Zheng couldn’t figure it out either.
No one dying may not necessarily be a good thing for Yang Xiao and Ye Zheng. Yang Xiao’s first reaction was that something strange had sneaked in.
The Fierce Ghost killed someone but disguised as that person to blend in among them.
Whether this was true or not still needed further judgment. Yang Xiao and Ye Zheng quickly grabbed some hot water and stuffed down some cold buns brought back from the cafeteria, then headed to the security department.
There, they saw Chief Zhou and a man in his early thirties locked in a small room at the furthest end of the security department.
The man had a scruffy beard, messy hair, and disheveled clothes. He had clearly suffered a bit and was extremely agitated.
Upon seeing this scene, Yang Xiao immediately understood. This guy was most likely the mysterious person who secretly came to offer incense to the dead last night.
Through Chief Zhou’s introduction, Yang Xiao figured out the man’s background.
This guy was named Sun Fendou. Despite his young age, he had some seniority in the factory. He lived in an old employee’s house, a privilege granted only to those who had worked in the factory for over ten years.
However, the accommodation environment of the so-called old employee house was average, just a row of bungalows, but the overall environment was slightly better than the abandoned old bungalow area.
It was mainly for old employees who were unmarried and not in a relationship, with one room per person, which was much better than the pigeonhole-like single employees’ dormitory, where at least they didn’t have to squeeze together with several people.
"Chief Zhou! Chief Zhou, I’m not lying!" Sun Fendou suddenly yelled, struggling desperately, "Please believe me, these cases weren’t done by enemy agents. It was Zhou Wenqing. Zhou Wenqing has returned!!"
"Who is Zhou Wenqing?" Yang Xiao immediately grasped the key point.
Chief Zhou, with a cigarette between his fingers, eyes bloodshot from long hours without sleep, answered with a hoarse old voice, "It was the person he was offering rituals to last night, the criminal who was burned to death."
Upon hearing this, Yang Xiao quickly walked to the small room’s door and questioned the man, "What makes you say it wasn’t sabotage by enemy agents?"
"Enemy agents aren’t immortals. Think about it yourself, could a human do such a thing?" Sun Fendou shouted loudly, "The cases have been happening for so long, have you found any clues from the security department?"
"Then why did you go to pay respects to Zhou Wenqing, that criminal?" Yang Xiao continued to ask, "I think you’re the enemy agent! Tell me, who are you waiting for to contact you?!"
"Don’t talk nonsense. I... I just hoped to appease his ghost, let him rest in peace, not... not come out to kill again. The dead cannot be resurrected. Although he died unjustly, things have been so long past anyway, so it should..."
At this point, Sun Fendou suddenly fell silent and tightly shut his mouth.
"Speak, why aren’t you continuing? Are you defending a criminal and dare to say you have no problem?" Yang Xiao turned to look at Chief Zhou and suggested, "Chief Zhou, I think we should send him to the higher department. This guy definitely has issues; he might be a contact person. Once the higher-ups pry his mouth open, we’ll surely catch a big fish and wipe out all enemy elements lurking in the factory."
"You bastard!" Sun Fendou, hearing this, was both frightened and angry, trembling all over, looking as if he wished to rush out and bite Yang Xiao to death.
But at that moment, Yang Xiao sharply noticed a peculiar look in Chief Zhou’s eyes directed toward him.
"Jiefang, come out with me," Chief Zhou said and walked away.
Yang Xiao had no choice but to quietly follow. The two of them arrived at a relatively secluded spot at the hallway corner. Chief Zhou tapped the cigarette pack, pulled a cigarette out, and handed it to Yang Xiao.
When a superior offers a cigarette, you take it even if you don’t smoke. Yang Xiao took it smoothly, putting it behind his ear, while Chief Zhou lit one for himself, taking a deep drag.
Being watched like that made Yang Xiao uncomfortable all over, but he knew very well that he needed to stay calm at that moment; he had already guessed that Chief Zhou was suspecting him.
"Jiefang, you’re a very exceptional young man. I applied to the city to access your records. Your resume is impressive. At a young age, you’ve already solved several major cases, and I also heard your way of solving cases is quite unique," Chief Zhou said.
"It’s okay, I just do my best," Yang Xiao replied evasively, unaware of what was in the files.
"The higher-ups think highly of you and want me to fully cooperate with you. So tell me, what do you need me to do?" Chief Zhou asked.
Hearing these words, Yang Xiao felt a weight off his shoulders. He first continued to test Chief Zhou with a few words.
Seeing nothing was amiss, he boldly requested a thorough investigation into the old self-immolation case in the bungalows, suspecting there was more to Zhou Wenqing’s death.
Upon hearing this, Chief Zhou did not answer immediately but slowly furrowed his brows.
"Is there a problem?" Yang Xiao asked cautiously.
"No, it’s just a bit tricky. This case was not handled by me; it was dealt with by another department, the factory’s joint defense team. Back then... the situation was quite special," Chief Zhou spoke evasively, as if having some hidden concerns.
"But since you’ve brought it up, I’ll fully support you. I’ll arrange for the security department to reopen the case investigation," Chief Zhou agreed.
