Chapter 119: Three Generations, One Headache

Kakashi had watched Balanced Frame with his Sharingan from the first exchange.

The darkened limb carried Yin Release through flesh without replacing physical force. Chakra established an expected state; Tonbo's body obeyed that expectation long enough to align itself around impact. Instant Opening expanded the principle across the body, trading the technique's careful limits for a single violent movement.

Kakashi understood the mechanism well enough to fear copying it. His Sharingan could reproduce seals and movements. It could not provide Tonbo's years of anatomical study, sensory feedback, or the chain of failed versions hidden behind the successful one. A copied Instant Opening might grant extraordinary speed once and leave the user unable to stand.

"You developed a nature transformation for taijutsu," Kakashi said.

Tonbo flexed his recovered hand. "A controlled application of one I already possessed."

"That is an unnecessarily modest answer."

"I am saving my pride for after I defeat you."

Guy, seated upon a boulder while the nutrient pill completed its work, raised both fists. "Kakashi, avenge the honor of pure taijutsu!"

"You used the Eight Gates."

"The purest expression of taijutsu."

"You also accepted Tonbo's recovery technique."

Guy lowered one fist. "Purity permits sensible medical care."

Tonbo and Kakashi moved to undamaged ground and formed the Seal of Confrontation.

"Do you need longer?" Kakashi asked.

"I possess more chakra than you. Fighting after Guy makes the comparison kinder."

Kakashi's visible eye flattened. "Your kindness is overwhelming."

They separated.

Tonbo expected Chidori, copied elemental techniques, and tactics built around the Sharingan's predictive sight. Kakashi expected genjutsu hidden inside harmless contact, woven constructs, sensory awareness, and techniques Tonbo had deliberately shown him. Both expectations were incomplete by design.

Kakashi began with Great Fireball Technique.

Tonbo answered with Water Wall. Steam swallowed the space between them. A massive shuriken emerged from the white veil, rotating toward Tonbo's neck. He heard the second weapon before he saw the first.

Tonbo threw his own and formed one seal. Shuriken Shadow Clone filled the steam with steel. Kakashi's weapon struck the first wave, changed direction, and revealed a wire attached to its center. The wire pulled a hidden explosive tag through the clones.

Tonbo dropped beneath the ground as the tag detonated.

The explosion cleared the steam. Kakashi watched for disturbed earth and found none. He abandoned the position a moment before Tonbo's hand emerged beneath his former footing.

An earth clone intercepted it and burst into mud.

"Traditional," Tonbo called from the trees.

"Effective," Kakashi answered from somewhere else.

Silence returned. Tonbo sent a woven beetle beneath the leaf litter and let its tiny movements resemble an attempt to flank. A kunai pinned it without revealing Kakashi's position. The response told Tonbo the direction from which Kakashi could see the bait, but Kakashi would know that it had told him. Their information became a hall of mirrors built without a single genjutsu.

The twins leaned forward upon the woven eagle. They could follow even less of this match. Long periods of apparent stillness ended in abrupt fire, water, or showers of metal.

"Are they fighting?" Maki asked.

"They are hiding," Tenyu said.

"From each other?"

"From us. Dad does not want us to steal his best moves."

Guy shook his head with great seriousness. "They are reading the field. A true shinobi battle may be decided before the first visible strike."

Maki considered that. "So Dad won before we arrived?"

"Your confidence in him is magnificent, but no."

Across the field, Kakashi placed three traps and allowed Tonbo to identify two. The missed wire redirected a volley of kunai toward the position Tonbo chose as an escape. Tonbo substituted with a branch, but the branch carried a seal Kakashi had copied from an earlier encounter. Lightning discharged through the substitution point.

Tonbo emerged with his left sleeve scorched.

"You improved it," he said.

"You complain when I copy without adding anything."

Wind Release scattered the remaining traps. Kakashi used the gust as cover to close distance, and the match contracted into kunai work. Sharingan predicted Tonbo's angles. Tonbo's perception detected Kakashi's commitment. Each knew what the other intended a fraction too early for either advantage to become decisive.

Tonbo changed rhythm by allowing a shallow cut across his sleeve. Kakashi recognized the invitation to overextend and refused it. Tonbo recognized the refusal and used the pause to stamp a barrier mark onto the ground.

Neither explained what the mark did.

Both moved away from it.

Guy laughed. "Magnificent caution!"

In the Hokage's office, Hiruzen watched the mountain through the Telescope Technique.

Kakashi, Guy, and Tonbo had grown from grieving children into shinobi capable of carrying the village through disasters their teachers had not survived. Their methods differed. Kakashi distrusted easy answers, Guy turned failure into effort, and Tonbo treated every certainty as a structure to be tested. Together they represented a generation Konoha would soon depend upon more than Hiruzen wished to admit. The thought brought pride and fatigue in equal measure.

His gaze settled upon Guy recovering beside the field.

The young man had petitioned for ANBU service so often that Hiruzen's secretary maintained a prepared refusal. Guy possessed loyalty, courage, and more combat power than most captains. He also announced challenges from rooftops, wore the most recognizable uniform in the village, and considered covert movement an opportunity to demonstrate faster running.

ANBU required anonymity.

Guy required witnesses.

Hiruzen shifted the image to the Academy before the familiar headache could deepen.

Iruka stood before the new class explaining the purpose of chakra theory. Kiba listened with his book already marked. Ino attempted to speak to Sasuke without appearing to attempt it. Shikamaru concealed remarkable attention behind a convincing yawn. Hinata watched Naruto whenever Naruto looked elsewhere.

Naruto himself raised his hand.

"When do we learn the technique that lets you beat every adult in the village?"

"There is no such technique," Iruka said.

"Then what does the Hokage use?"

"Experience, judgment, and many techniques practiced correctly."

Naruto slumped. Kiba began taking notes.

Hiruzen smiled. Before dismissal, he would address the students himself and explain the Will of Fire. Speeches did not create loyalty by themselves, but children deserved to hear that the village regarded them as more than future weapons.

The crystal shifted when his attention returned to the mountain.

Tonbo and Kakashi had transformed half the training ground into broken earth. Neither appeared injured. Guy appeared ready to rejoin the battle despite explicit orders to recover.

Three generations occupied Hiruzen's day: the children beginning their education, the shinobi inheriting responsibility, and the aging leaders attempting not to burden either with unresolved failures.

Konohamaru would enter that chain soon enough. Hiruzen wanted his grandson to inherit affection before office, curiosity before doctrine, and a village worthy of loyalty rather than one that demanded it by blood. Wanting those things did not guarantee he knew how to provide them.

Only one of those generations submitted an ANBU application every two weeks.

Hiruzen reached for the prepared refusal
