Chapter 118: Taijutsu
Tonbo and Guy met beneath the falling leaf.
Palm struck palm. Guy turned the contact into a grip and pulled; Tonbo stepped through the force, drove an elbow toward his ribs, and found empty air as Guy folded beneath it. A heel swept toward Tonbo's knee. He cleared it by the width of a finger and answered with a kick that made Guy retreat across the stone.
Neither spoke during the next exchange.
Body Flicker became acceleration rather than disappearance at their level. Dust marked abrupt changes of direction. Pebbles jumped when their feet found purchase. Tonbo sensed the contractions that preceded Guy's attacks, but Guy had built thousands of feints from the same beginnings. Information arrived faster than certainty.
Kakashi watched from a ridge with his Sharingan exposed. He ignored the woven eagle above except to confirm that its barrier remained active. Tenyu and Maki could not follow individual strikes; they watched fractures spread beneath the fighters and invented the missing battle between each impact.
"Dad is winning," Tenyu said.
"The green one has not fallen," Maki replied.
"Dad is making him wait."
"That is what you said when Mom beat Dad at cards."
Below, Guy blocked a spinning heel with both forearms and slid backward.
Tonbo formed one seal. Balanced Frame darkened his right arm from the knuckles to the shoulder, not as pigment but as the visual boundary of a command imposed through chakra.
"The next strike carries more force," he warned.
Guy's grin widened. "Then I shall answer it with everything youth permits. First Gate: open. Second Gate: open. Third Gate: open!"
Chakra surged through the pathways around him. Heat distorted the air. The restraint that ordinarily protected muscle and bone yielded in measured stages, exchanging safety for speed and power.
Guy attacked.
Tonbo's reinforced fist met his forearm guard. The collision cracked the ground between them and sent both men apart. Guy recovered first, crossed the distance, and forced Tonbo to defend against a chain of punches too fast for ordinary sight.
Balanced Frame changed Tonbo's options without changing his mass. He could not absorb every blow. Instead, he used short reinforced contacts to spoil Guy's balance: a shoulder against the chest, a forearm beneath an elbow, two knuckles against the turning hip. Each impact passed through the alignment Chōza had taught him and ended before strain collected in one joint.
Guy adapted. He stopped contesting strength and attacked from angles that made full alignment impossible. A rising kick grazed Tonbo's jaw. Another struck his guard hard enough to numb both hands.
"He hit Dad," Maki said.
Tenyu cracked another seed. "Once."
"Twice."
"The first one was a tactical touch."
Guy opened the Fourth Gate. His speed increased sharply. Tonbo lost the luxury of reading individual muscles and expanded perception across the entire field. Air displacement, disturbed dust, sound reflected from stone, and the sudden absence of Guy's chakra from one position became a single moving pattern.
A Konoha Great Whirlwind drove Tonbo through a young tree. He twisted before impact, let the trunk break across his reinforced shoulder, and rolled clear of the following heel.
Guy did not pursue at once. "Can you continue?"
"The tree cannot."
Tonbo rose and checked his left arm. Bruising, no fracture. Balanced Frame had redistributed most of the force, but not all. Safe did not mean invulnerable.
He adjusted the technique before resuming. The next reinforcement would end sooner and protect the shoulder more heavily. A real enemy would not grant time for revision, but a controlled match existed precisely to expose failures before they became casualties. Guy waited without impatience, understanding the same bargain from the opposite side.
They resumed. Guy pressed him toward the cliff, forcing repeated blocks until Tonbo's breathing became audible. Tonbo allowed the pattern to develop, then struck the ground instead of Guy. A slab of stone tilted beneath Guy's next step. The movement delayed him for less than a heartbeat. It was enough to drive a reinforced palm into his guard.
Guy flew backward, landed upon one hand, and turned the fall into a spinning counterattack. Tonbo ducked. The kick tore a line through the cliff behind him.
Kakashi's eye narrowed. Both men were smiling. Neither had remembered the restaurant for several minutes.
"Guy," he called, "the Fifth Gate is not necessary for a friendly match."
"I have not yet shown the full answer to Tonbo's technique."
"That was not a denial."
Guy opened the Fifth Gate.
The pressure of released chakra threw grit away from his feet. Tonbo felt the acceleration before his eyes registered motion. Guy crossed the field with a concussion and appeared inside his guard.
Tonbo blocked three strikes. The fourth drove breath from his lungs. The fifth never landed because his senses caught a slight change in Guy's planted foot.
Illusion Body: Instant Opening.
Balanced Frame released. The command spread through Tonbo's entire body for a fraction of a second, removing protective hesitation, coordinating every muscle around one chosen motion, and compelling his chakra network to support it. The method resembled the logic of the Eight Gates without physically opening them. Its cost came afterward.
Tonbo disappeared from Guy's front and reappeared behind him. He could have struck the spine. Instead, five fingers touched between Guy's shoulders and discharged a controlled wave through the reinforced contact.
Guy tumbled across the field. He rolled twice, dug both hands into the stone, and stopped at the edge of the crater Tonbo had made earlier.
The Fifth Gate closed.
Tonbo remained standing until his body collected the debt from Instant Opening. Tremors moved through his thighs. His pulse struck too quickly. Balanced Frame had limits built into every use; Instant Opening depended upon judgment, and judgment became least reliable when victory appeared close.
Kakashi moved between them.
"Finished," he said.
Guy rolled onto his back and stared at the sky. "I lost a taijutsu match to a genjutsu specialist."
"You lost a practice match to a technique designed around your example," Tonbo said. He offered a hand. "There is dignity in being an excellent research subject."
Guy accepted the hand and rose. "Then I shall run twenty laps around the village and become a better research subject."
"Ten," Kakashi said. "Tomorrow. After recovery."
Tonbo removed a nutrient pill from his pouch. He checked Guy's pulse and chakra flow before allowing him to swallow it, then placed two fingers against his wrist.
Illusion Body: Metabolic Recall did not create stamina. It restored a remembered pattern of efficient absorption, circulation, and muscle release while the pill supplied material the body could use. The effect accelerated recovery but could conceal damage if Tonbo applied it carelessly. He kept perception fixed upon Guy's heart and the pathways stressed by the Gates.
Guy's breathing steadied. The ache remained, but the desperate emptiness after the Fifth Gate began to recede.
"Medical ninjutsu?" he asked.
"A genjutsu acting upon the body, supported by field medicine. You are recovering from your own resources. I am only reducing waste."
"Teach me."
Tonbo shook his head. "It requires fine genjutsu control, sensory feedback, anatomy, and a separate pattern for every patient. Applied blindly, it could force an injured body to consume reserves it needs to survive."
Guy's disappointment lasted one breath. "Then I shall learn enough anatomy to recognize when you should use it on me."
That answer pleased Tonbo more than another request for a shortcut would have.
"Begin with pulse, breathing, and the warning signs after each Gate," Tonbo said. "Recovery starts with knowing when continued effort becomes injury."
Guy nodded as seriously as he had accepted any challenge.
The woven eagle descended. Maki leaned over her harness.
"Dad, when do we learn the black-arm punch?"
"After you can cross the kitchen without breaking a bowl."
Tenyu frowned. "Those skills are unrelated."
"Control connects them."
"Then Maki has to wait longer than me."
Maki threw a seed husk at him. The barrier stopped it from leaving the saddle and dropped it back into her hair.
Kakashi closed his Sharingan. "Your turn to rest, Tonbo."
Tonbo looked at the tremor still fading from his hand. "Agreed."
"Good."
Kakashi reopened *Icha Icha Paradise*.
"Because when you finish, I want my match."
