Naruto arrived at the clearing on the farm where he had asked Konohamaru to meet him, having sent the message through Sai yesterday.
Walking normally through the Village was still a little strange for him after everything that had happened, so he preferred to avoid the busier areas for the next few days. Since he had already placed a Hiraishin seal on that training field before, it was easy to get there directly.
However, instead of finding only Konohamaru, Naruto found his entire team gathered there.
"What should we call him now? Maybe Naruto-sama?" Moegi asked in a low voice.
"But he said he’s going to teach me a jutsu, so shouldn’t I call him sensei?" Konohamaru replied, looking genuinely torn over the matter.
"Maybe I can get an autograph. I brought some paper..." Udon commented as he adjusted his glasses.
"Hm?" Naruto heard those whispering voices as the three talked, none of them noticing his arrival from behind, and he couldn’t help raising an eyebrow when he heard what their conversation was about.
"What’s going on here?" he murmured to himself, looking at the three of them without understanding anything at all. That certainly wasn’t what he had expected to find when he came there, nor had he even imagined the other two would be present.
Naruto silently approached the trio, who continued whispering while looking at something in the middle of them. When he got close enough, his eyes finally managed to make out a clipboard covered with several lines that seemed to be a list of things they should or shouldn’t do.
[Don’t annoy Naruto. Ask about the new hair. Ask about the Nine-Tails. Convince him to teach a powerful technique. Ask to see the golden mode. Get an autograph. Naruto-sama or Naruto-sensei?]
Naruto raised an eyebrow even higher as he read that, spending a few seconds not knowing how to react before simply shaking his head and clearing his throat.
The three immediately stopped whispering and, very slowly, turned their heads in his direction.
"..." Naruto stared at them.
"..." They stared at Naruto.
"What are you guys doing?" Naruto asked, breaking the silence.
Konohamaru was the first to react, quickly hiding the clipboard behind his back. "Nothing, Naruto-sensei! I mean, Naruto-sama! I mean... sensei!" he said several times, each attempt seeming to make him even more nervous.
Naruto blinked a few times before shaking his head. "You can just call me Naruto, like always. And it’s fine, I said I’d teach you a technique, that doesn’t mean you need to call me sensei, and I’m not someone of such a high position that I should be called Sama..."
The three quickly nodded.
"Of course, Naruto-sen... I mean, Naruto-sama... I mean, Naruto!" Konohamaru replied, still seeming nervous, while Moegi and Udon nodded beside him.
Naruto brought a hand to his face. "Stop that. It’s still me, there’s no reason for you to be nervous. Or did you forget who taught you the Sexy Jutsu?" he asked with a small smile.
Konohamaru finally seemed to relax a little upon hearing that, although there was still a certain caution in his expression.
Naruto was already starting to hate that kind of treatment. It wasn’t enough that people all over the Village had started acting differently around him, now even the people he knew were behaving as if he were someone far above them.
I mean, he really was much stronger now, that was obvious, but a large part of that had only happened thanks to the people he had met in the other world, especially his parents.
Naruto had been absurdly lucky to find two extremely powerful people who were willing to train him and pass on everything they knew, so he couldn’t simply start considering himself superior to others because of that.
"Well, anyway..." Naruto turned his eyes back to the three of them before tilting his head slightly toward another part of the clearing. "There’s someone else hiding here, isn’t there, Ebisu?"
The three immediately looked in that direction in surprise as a figure finally emerged from his hiding place.
Naruto, however, showed no surprise at all. He had already sensed Ebisu’s presence from the moment he arrived at the training field.
In fact, with the range his sensory abilities currently possessed, if he really focused, Naruto could be in his apartment and still sense a good portion of the people present in the Village’s training fields.
Ebisu landed in the clearing while adjusting his glasses, immediately turning his attention to Naruto. "Hello, Naruto," he greeted.
"Hello, Ebisu. How are you?" Naruto replied as he looked at him. He remembered that Ebisu had also appeared during all that chaos against Danzo two days ago. He obviously hadn’t participated directly in the battle, since Tsunade had mainly left the ANBU and those she had personally chosen to handle the situation, even going so far as to forbid other ninja from interfering, but there had still been many spectators. It was no wonder practically the entire Village was talking about it now.
"Ebisu-sensei, what are you doing here?" Konohamaru immediately asked, looking at his teacher in surprise.
"I knew you would be here, so I just came to make sure you wouldn’t bother Naruto," Ebisu replied with a sigh.
Naruto immediately grimaced. Sure, he had expected to find only Konohamaru when he arrived, but there was no need to make such a big deal out of the other two children’s presence either.
"Don’t worry, Ebisu. Even though I was surprised by the others being here, it’s fine," Naruto assured him.
"Naruto-sama!" Moegi and Udon said almost at the same time.
Naruto looked at them again. "Stop calling me that."
The two immediately fell silent, while Konohamaru held back a laugh. "Well, anyway, I wanted to teach Konohamaru a few things. I hope you don’t mind," Naruto said as he approached the group again.
"No, that’s more than fine. Under your guidance, perhaps Konohamaru might even end up surpassing me," Ebisu replied proudly.
"Really, Ebisu-sensei?!" Konohamaru immediately asked, becoming even more excited.
"Don’t get so excited. Do you really think my training is going to be easy?" Naruto asked, this time taking on a more serious tone.
That didn’t discourage Konohamaru in the slightest, only increasing his excitement even more. "Then bring it on! I’ll surpass all your expectations!" declared the grandson of the late Third Hokage.
Naruto gave a small smile at that determination, but he knew there was much more behind his decision to train Konohamaru at that particular moment.
The boy was still quite shaken by the recent death of his uncle, Asuma, at the hands of the Akatsuki, and Naruto was somewhat afraid that he might end up seeking revenge on his own.
Even though the person mainly responsible for Asuma’s death had already been defeated by Shikamaru and Hidan was buried underground, that didn’t mean Konohamaru couldn’t do something reckless against the organization itself in the future, especially because, according to the information they had, there were still several Akatsuki members alive and, in the end, they had only defeated a few of them. Many of the most dangerous ones were still out there.
That was precisely why Naruto was even more determined to train Konohamaru. He didn’t just want to make him stronger, he wanted to teach him not to throw his own life away so easily and, most importantly, make him understand when he should fight and when he should retreat.
Fortunately, Naruto now had an excellent standard for that kind of training, after all, he had trained directly with Minato in the other world and knew very well how his father had prepared his own team.
As inhuman as some of Minato’s training methods might seem at times, the results spoke for themselves. Obito, Kakashi, and Rin had become far more powerful than their versions in that world normally would have been at that age.
Naruto only had to remember Obito. Even though he was only eleven years old, the boy already displayed a level of skill that easily surpassed practically every genin Naruto had seen during the Chūnin Exams.
They could even defeat a Gaara, Sasuke, or Neji with relative ease, when those three had been hailed as true prodigies since childhood. Neji in particular, during the Chūnin Exams, had only lost to Naruto after a difficult fight, in which the blond had needed to resort to the Nine-Tailed Fox’s chakra to turn the battle around.
Naruto couldn’t help but open a mischievous smile as he stared at Konohamaru, making the boy look back at him with a mixture of surprise and caution. He still didn’t know exactly what that smile meant, much less how much he would regret the words he had just said a few hours later.
While Naruto began the training, eventually dragging even Konohamaru’s other two teammates into the middle of that chaos, the Village was still trying to recover from everything that had happened over the past few days.
The clash of two hands echoed across the Hyūga Clan’s training field as Hinata battled her younger sister.
The two exchanged blows rapidly, chakra being released from the tips of their fingers with each attack as they tried to strike each other’s tenketsu. That day, however, even Hanabi was being pressured by her sister, forced to retreat before a Hinata who was far more aggressive than she normally was during their training sessions.
Neji remained in a corner watching the fight and couldn’t help but show some surprise when Hinata managed to break through her sister’s defense and strike her with enough force to send her falling several meters backward with a groan.
Hinata immediately stopped, looking at her own hand in a bit of a daze. "Sorry!" she said awkwardly before running over to Hanabi and extending a hand to help her up.
Hanabi had always displayed impressive natural talent, far greater than Hinata’s own, but that day her older sister was different and, considering the years of advantage she also had, it shouldn’t be so difficult to believe that she could finally pressure her like that.
"You got me good there," Hanabi admitted as she accepted her hand, although she still seemed a little frustrated by the defeat. After that, she decided to take a break and went to sit down to catch her breath.
"Thinking about Naruto?" Neji’s voice interrupted Hinata, who had remained still and lost herself in thought as soon as the training ended. She immediately turned to her cousin with wide eyes.
"N-No! Of course not!" she replied far too quickly.
Neji raised an eyebrow. "Hinata, everyone is talking about him. It wouldn’t be strange for you to be thinking about Naruto right now too," he said calmly.
Hinata still seemed like she wanted to deny it, but ended up simply sighing. "Naruto-kun has become very strong," she murmured with a hint of sorrow.
"And you think you’re falling behind," Neji suspected.
"I didn’t say that," Hinata replied.
That drew a small laugh from Neji. "We all are. They’re saying Naruto might be the strongest ninja in Konoha right now, surpassing all of us by an absurd margin. And to think all those things he told us that night at the barbecue were true... He really had gone through all of that, and now he possesses techniques from the Uzumaki Clan, mastery over his bijū, the First Hokage’s ability, and, from what I’ve heard, even the Fourth’s technique. We can’t think of him anymore as simply someone we need to catch up to," Neji said with a sigh.
He himself had already acknowledged Naruto many years ago, when they were both still genin and he was defeated, but he had never imagined that boy would end up becoming so powerful. What did it even mean to be a great genius compared to the things Naruto could do now?
Hinata remained silent for a few seconds before sighing as well. That was precisely what bothered her. She wasn’t envious of Naruto’s strength, much less did she wish he had remained weak; on the contrary, part of her was genuinely happy to see him finally receiving recognition after so many years.
What frightened her was the possibility that she might never be able to catch up to him again. Naruto seemed to have reached such a distant level that Hinata began to wonder whether she would ever be able to remain by his side, or whether, when he looked back, she would be too far away for him to even see her.
"I don’t know why you’re so desperate about it," Neji finally said as he watched Hanabi training alone in the middle of the courtyard. "I heard Naruto personally escorted you back to the clan residence recently, and his house isn’t even that far from here."
A blush immediately spread across Hinata’s face. "Y-You got it all wrong! It’s not... it’s not because of those things!" she replied desperately, making Neji form a small smile as he was about to continue teasing her.
However, before he could say anything, a group appeared at the entrance to the courtyard and caught the attention of all three. Hiashi was at the front accompanied by the Hokage herself, while Jiraiya, Anko, and Yamato walked just behind them, all engaged in an apparently very serious conversation.
Neji and Hinata immediately straightened up at the adults’ arrival, and even Hanabi stopped her training to watch the group approach.
"You’re saying the Byakugan has an evolution and that a Hyūga in that other world managed to attain it?" Hiashi asked, still looking stunned by what Tsunade had just told him.
There was no information about those eyes in the scrolls left behind by Minato. In fact, Minato seemed to have been deliberately careful about what he chose to record. He didn’t explain how to awaken the Tenseigan or Mangekyō Sharingan, left no instructions on how someone could obtain Mokuton, and, even in that last case, there were only a few clues due to the fact that Naruto, Yamato, and Danzo possessed that ability for completely different reasons.
Minato knew that this world shouldn’t be altered indiscriminately and, because of that, he had mainly left information that would allow Konoha to understand the enemies it would face and begin preparing for them. After all, in the same way that such information could help his allies become stronger, it would also be disastrous if it ended up in the hands of their enemies.
Even so, Yamato had told them a great deal about what he had witnessed in the other world, and the mystery surrounding that other version of Minato only grew. Somehow, all the women he had married were absurdly powerful, some of them easily surpassing what could normally be considered Kage level.
One wielded Mokuton on a scale that made even Yamato look like a child compared to her. Another possessed the same eyes as Madara Uchiha, taking the Sharingan to a level few could even imagine. There was also an Uzumaki who had completely mastered the power of the Nine-Tailed Fox and was far more powerful than the Kushina they had known in that world. But among all of them, there was also a Hyūga who possessed an unknown evolution of the Byakugan and, according to Yamato, she might even have been the most powerful among Minato’s wives.
"Yes. According to Yamato, her eyes were blue and luminous, almost as if there were a crystallized sky inside them," Tsunade explained before turning her eyes toward Yamato. She raised an eyebrow, however, when she realized he had stopped walking. "Is something wrong, Yamato?"
Yamato didn’t answer immediately, his gaze fixed on a single person.
"Her..." he murmured before slowly raising his hand and pointing.
Everyone followed the direction of his finger toward the youngest girl in the courtyard.
Hanabi was still wearing her training clothes and remained near the center of the field, waiting for her father while watching the visitors with a firm and relatively calm expression, although there was a certain uneasiness in her eyes at the unexpected arrival of the Hokage and so many important ninja at the Hyūga residence.
For Yamato, however, none of that mattered at that moment. "She’s identical to the Hanabi we knew, but older..."
That face was unmistakable.
"My daughter?" Hiashi asked in surprise. He had already heard Tsunade mention that there was a Hanabi in that other world and had even made a small joke saying that his daughter should strive to become as powerful as that woman before they began walking through the Hyūga estate.
He had heard a great deal about the other world and had been quite surprised, until he heard about the Tenseigan for the first time while they were arriving there.
Because the timeline was different, his daughter didn’t seem to be one of those possible powerful wives of Minato, and, since their ages simply didn’t match, Hiashi had until then believed it was merely a coincidence of names.
Yamato, however, seemed to have something very different to say. "She is that Hanabi," he replied, still looking directly at the girl. "One of Minato’s wives."
The face was unmistakable. Naturally, there was an enormous difference in age, after all, the Hanabi Yamato had known in the other world was already a young adult, while the one before him was only a girl of almost twelve, but there was no doubt that they were the same person.
Hanabi was certainly surprised to realize that all those adults were looking and even pointing at her while saying that she was someone Yamato knew, but she managed to remain where she was, trying to maintain her composure despite the obvious confusion in her gaze. Nearby, Hinata and Neji exchanged glances, equally lost at that revelation.
"You’re saying it’s her?" Tsunade asked in surprise, turning to look again at the girl who had become a genin only a short time ago, but who was already recognized as extremely talented. As Hokage, Tsunade had had access to Hanabi’s academy records and evaluations a few times, so she knew that Hiashi’s youngest daughter was far from an ordinary child.
"Yes, there’s no mistake. It’s the same face as Miss Hanabi’s and also the same name, except..." Yamato hesitated and turned his eyes toward Hiashi. "She certainly wasn’t your daughter in that world."
"Tell me more," Hiashi said immediately, narrowing his eyes. That made the entire situation even stranger. He wanted to understand exactly what that resemblance meant and how two apparently so similar worlds could have the same Hanabi, with the same face and the same name, but born in completely different eras.
