Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri
Chapter 462 358 : The Adversary Finds A Door!!
"Finally."
The word hung in the corridor longer than a single syllable should have.
Kagetsu's own face didn't look like his own anymore — not physically, nothing had changed about it, but the stillness behind his eyes belonged to someone who had been waiting a very long time for exactly this moment and intended to enjoy it.
He tried to move his own hand, the way he had a minute ago with the last voice, the small test that had worked before.
Nothing happened.
Not resistance. Not a fight for control. Just silence where his own intention used to be, like reaching for a light switch in a room that had already been rewired.
—
The figure went rigid before anyone else reacted.
"No," it said. Just that, at first. Then, louder, with something in it Kagetsu had never heard from it before — not fear exactly. Recognition. "No, not you. Not here."
"Me exactly," the voice said, using Kagetsu's mouth like it had always belonged to it. "You should be flattered. I've been looking for a door back in since the last one closed on me."

[Divergent Expression: Passive Monitor — Vocal Channel, PRIORITY]
Trigger: Full vocal sample obtained, third distinct voice this chapter.
Reading: 88% signature match to the source candidate family baseline (Ch. 346 reference). Highest-confidence identification recorded for this entity to date.
Cross-reference: Consistent with erratic/destabilized readings logged Ch. 347-357 — signature never fully lost, only unlocatable through any monitored channel until now.
Confidence: High.
—
"The source candidate," Orochimaru said, low, like saying it too loud might invite more of its attention than they already had.
"That's what your machine calls me," the voice agreed. "I've had better names. None of them are yours to use."
Eight chapters of an erratic, undetectable signature, and here it was, standing in plain sight, wearing someone else entirely. Orochimaru filed the thought away rather than saying it — there wasn't time to marvel at the confirmation right now, only to use it.
Kushina's chains snapped fully into place, aimed now, finally, at something the colony could actually confirm was real.
"You lost Kushina's body in Ch— " Minato caught himself, started over. "You lost her body. Months ago. Losing again isn't going to go better for you."
"I didn't lose her," the source candidate said, mild, almost bored. "I was removed. There's a difference, and you were there for it, blond one, so don't insult us both pretending you don't remember which."
—
The figure hadn't moved from where it sat against the wall.
Its eyes hadn't left Kagetsu's face, or whatever was currently wearing it.
"You said the door closed on you," it said, quietly. "It did. I closed it myself. Why does it matter to you that it's open again, unless you already knew what would be waiting on the other side of it."
"Careful," the source candidate said, and for the first time something genuine slipped through the boredom — something sharper, older, unmistakably personal. "You don't get to sound surprised. Not after four months of watching me from a distance and doing nothing."
—
"I couldn't do anything," the figure said. "You know exactly why."
"I know what you told yourself," the source candidate said. "I was there for the part before the story you tell people now. I remember what actually happened between us a great deal more clearly than you'd prefer."
The room went very quiet.
Even Kushina's chains seemed to still, mid-air, as though the tension of what wasn't being said had reached everyone at once.
Kushina's chains hadn't lowered. Neither had wavered from a target they couldn't actually strike.
"What happened between you," Orochimaru said, cutting through it. "Say it plainly, or don't say it at all. We don't have room left tonight for half a story."
—
The source candidate turned Kagetsu's head, slow, deliberate, toward the figure.
"Ask him," it said. "He's had years to decide how he wants to tell it. I'd be curious what version comes out first, now that I'm standing close enough to correct him if he lies."
The figure's jaw tightened.
"I'm not telling this story with you inside someone else's body," it said. "Get out of him."
"Make me," the source candidate said, and something in its tone made it clear the invitation wasn't rhetorical.
—
Kagetsu felt his own arm move again — not the slow, deliberate rise of Ch. 356, something faster this time, more certain, like a hand that had already decided exactly where it was going and didn't need permission to get there.
It reached toward the figure.
"Kagetsu, fight it," Orochimaru said, already moving, already too far away to close the distance in time.
"I'm trying." His own voice, thin, layered underneath the source candidate's colder one, both of them using the same mouth at once for the first time. "It's not like the other one. It's not sharing anything."
There was no negotiation to it, none of the careful deference the memory-signature had shown an hour ago. This felt like being a doorway someone else had already decided they owned.
—
The figure scrambled to its feet — genuinely to its feet this time, not the half-crawl of Ch. 356 — putting weight on legs that clearly weren't ready for it.
"Don't," it said, to the room, to the source candidate, to whichever of them might still be listening. "Whatever you think you're owed, this isn't the way to collect it. Not through him."
"He offered the door," the source candidate said. "I didn't build it. I'm only walking through it."
—
Kushina's chains surged forward, aimed directly at Kagetsu's outstretched arm now — not a restraint meant to stop him, but one meant to redirect, to pull, to buy even a single second.
They connected.
For the first time all night, something held.
The arm jerked, resisted, strained against the chain wrapped tight around the wrist — and the source candidate, mid-motion, went very still inside him, as if genuinely surprised something had finally worked. Kushina planted her feet and threw her whole weight into it, jaw locked, arms shaking against a pull that shouldn't have needed this much effort to contain.
—
"That's new," it said, almost admiring. "The Uzumaki girl's chains. I remember these being useless against me the first time."
"You weren't fighting through someone else's arm the first time," Kushina said, teeth gritted, both hands wrapped white-knuckled around the chain as she fought to hold the tension. "Different rules apply when you're borrowing the body."
The source candidate laughed — Kagetsu's voice, but nothing of Kagetsu in the sound at all.
"Borrowing implies I intend to give it back on your schedule," it said. "I don't."
—
The chain held for three more seconds.
Three seconds felt like a long time, standing in it. Long enough for Orochimaru to close half the distance. Long enough for the figure to plant its own weight against the wall, bracing for whatever came next. Long enough for Kagetsu, still fighting for a foothold somewhere inside his own skull, to realize the fight wasn't one he was winning, only one he hadn't finished losing yet.
Then, without any visible strain, without anything that looked like effort at all, the source candidate simply stopped resisting the direction Kushina was pulling — and let the momentum carry Kagetsu's whole body forward instead, straight past where his own arm had been aimed, straight at the figure itself.
Not a strike.
A grab.
Fingers closed around the figure's wrist before anyone could get between them, and the moment contact landed, both of them went rigid at once — the figure's mismatched eyes going wide, the source candidate's borrowed voice cutting off mid-syllable, as something passed between the two of them that none of the others in the corridor could see, hear, or stop.
Orochimaru reached them half a second too late, hand closing on empty air where Kagetsu's shoulder had been a moment before he'd finished the last stride.
Kushina's chains went taut and useless again, holding a wrist that had stopped fighting them entirely — because whatever was happening now wasn't happening in the part of Kagetsu's arm the chain could reach.
