Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri
Chapter 461 357 : Sharing The Seat!!
"...Oh," the voice said again, quieter this time. "This is different."
Kagetsu felt it the way he'd feel a second person crowding onto a bench built for one — present, undeniable, and yet somehow not pushing him off.
He tried to speak.
His own voice came out.
"Wait." His mouth, his breath, his own inflection. "I can still—"
"You can," the voice agreed, layered faintly underneath his own words like a second track playing half a beat behind. "I'm not doing what he did. I don't know how to do what he did. I've never had a seat of my own to push someone out of."
It felt nothing like Ch. 350. There was no pressure behind his eyes, no grip closing around his own will the way "he" had closed around it. If anything it felt almost polite about its presence, like a guest standing carefully near the door rather than making itself comfortable in the good chair.
That, somehow, was its own kind of unsettling.
—
Orochimaru's grip on his wrist hadn't loosened.
"Say that again," he said. "Slowly."
"I'm not occupying him." The layered voice steadied, finding its footing. "I'm sharing. He can still move his own hand. Watch."
Kagetsu's free hand lifted — his choice, his motion, nothing pulling at it — and he flexed his fingers in front of his own face like he was checking they still belonged to him.
They did.
—
"That's new," the figure said, from where it still sat against the wall, one palm pressed to its own diminished crack. Its voice had gone careful, the way it got right before admitting something. "I've never seen it do that either."
"You know it," Kushina said. Not a question.
"I hosted it," the figure said. "That's not the same as knowing it. You can carry something for a long time without ever being introduced."
"How long," Orochimaru said.
The figure didn't answer that part.
"Longer than I've had this crack," it said instead. "That's the only measurement I'm willing to give you right now."
—
"Then introduce us now," Orochimaru said.
The voice inside Kagetsu was quiet for a moment.
"I don't have a name I'm allowed to give," it said finally. "Not won't. Can't. There's a difference, and I understand nobody in this corridor has any reason left to believe me on that distinction, but it's true anyway."
"Convenient," Minato said.
"It's not," the voice said, with something that sounded almost like hurt. "It's the least convenient thing about me. Everyone I've ever wanted to talk to, I couldn't."
—
[Divergent Expression: Passive Monitor — Vocal Channel]
Trigger: Sustained shared vocal control, Kagetsu's own signature and the unclassified arrival co-present without displacement.
Reading: Partial signature match obtained during sustained speech — 22% to the established Uzumaki clan baseline (Ch. 333-334 reference signature). First non-zero clan match recorded on any tracked entity this arc.
Match to "he," source candidate, vessel, doorway-thing, Madara-consistent baseline: 0% across all categories, unchanged from Ch. 356.
Confidence: Moderate on the Uzumaki reading. Full on the zero-match exclusions.
—
Nobody spoke for a moment after the reading came through. Orochimaru read it twice, silently, before saying it aloud, as if a second pass might change the number.
It didn't.
—
Kushina went very still.
"Say that number again," she said.
"Twenty-two percent," Orochimaru said. "Clan baseline."
Kushina's hand had gone, without her seeming to notice it happening, to the fabric over her own sternum, the same spot the source candidate had once pressed two fingers to in Ch. 346.
"That's not nothing," she said, voice tight. "That's not close to nothing."
The voice inside Kagetsu made a sound that wasn't quite a laugh and wasn't quite something else.
"That's her, isn't it," it said, unprompted, quiet. "The way you're standing. The way your hand went to your hip before you caught yourself. I used to watch someone do exactly that."
—
"Watch who," Kushina said, chains forming at her shoulders without her seeming to notice.
"I don't have her name anymore." The voice sounded almost apologetic about it. "I know I should. I know I did, once. It's been kept somewhere a long time, and things get worn down when they're kept somewhere long enough."
"What do you remember," Kushina pressed, softer now, the chains sinking back down. "Anything. I don't care how small."
"Hands," the voice said, after a pause that felt like it was searching through something in the dark. "The way she'd hold a kunai like she was annoyed at it for existing. Red — not the mark's red, an actual color, hair, I think, though I can't be sure I'm remembering it right anymore. A laugh that didn't match how serious everything around her was."
Kushina made a small sound she didn't seem to intend to make. Her hand had drifted to her own hair without her noticing.
"Kept where," Orochimaru said. "By who."
The voice didn't answer that directly.
"By him," it said instead, quieter. "At his own request, not as a weapon, not as a threat. The one thing he asked to keep that wasn't for using against anyone. I don't think he expected it would ever come out again."
—
The figure's head came up sharply.
"That's enough," it said. "You don't get to tell them that part."
"Why not," the voice said, and for the first time it sounded less careful, almost defiant. "You've kept me quiet long enough. I'd like to finish one sentence before something else decides I don't get to."
"Because I don't know how long you've been hidden," the figure said, "and if the answer is what I think it is, saying it out loud in this corridor is going to draw exactly the wrong kind of attention."
Minato hadn't moved from where he stood, but his eyes had gone from the figure to Kagetsu's arm and stayed there, tracking the faint white glow still bleeding out along the mark's edges.
"You've been wrong about timing before tonight," he said quietly. "Both of you have."
Neither the figure nor the voice answered that.
—
It was too late.
Kagetsu felt it before anyone spoke — a warmth low in his mark, sharp and sudden, entirely different from the voice's steady, layered presence. It didn't build the way it had in Ch. 352 or Ch. 355. There was no ramp to it at all, just a flat wall of heat where a second ago there had been nothing.
The splinter.
It hadn't reacted like this before. Not to the word "Uzushiogakure," not to the figure's proximity. This was faster, hungrier, climbing past every threshold Divergent Expression had ever logged for it — no gradual build, just a straight, vertical spike, like something that had been holding perfectly still finally caught the scent it had been waiting for.
"No," the voice inside him said, and this time it was afraid. "No, it shouldn't know me. Nothing that came from him should know me at all."
"Then why is it reacting," Kushina said, chains snapping fully into place now, aimed at nothing again, because there was still nothing solid to aim at.
"I don't know," the voice said, and the honesty in it was somehow worse than a lie would have been. "I don't know, and I've never once said that about anything in longer than I can remember."
—
"Kagetsu." Orochimaru's voice, sharp now, no longer just controlled. "Talk to me."
"It's not him," Kagetsu managed. "It's not the voice either. Something's—"
His knees buckled.
Orochimaru caught him, again, the same grip that had caught him three times before tonight, and this time it wasn't enough to keep him fully upright. Minato was there half a second later, an arm under his other shoulder, both of them lowering him rather than letting him drop the rest of the way.
—
The figure was moving before anyone else, closing the distance in a way that ignored its own visible weakness, hand outstretched toward Kagetsu's marked arm.
It didn't make it in time.
The splinter's warmth peaked, spiked, and broke over some threshold none of them had a name for, and Kagetsu's own voice — the one that had just proven, seconds ago, that it could still speak for itself — went silent.
Something else took it instead.
Not the layered, careful voice from before.
Something colder, and it didn't introduce itself.
It didn't sound like it needed to.
It just said one word, in a tone that made the temperature in the corridor feel like it dropped with it — the same single word this corridor had heard before, from the figure, from the vessel and the doorway-thing in perfect unison, every time something new had finally found its way through:
"Finally."
