Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God
Chapter 329 - 330: Shadows of What Might Be
Chapter 329: Chapter 330: Shadows of What Might Be
The past had been finite.
Once the final major residues of extinct universes and dead power systems finished flowing into the loop, Absolute Comprehension shifted its primary focus without any interruption in the process. The present Multiverse continued to feed him in the background — living systems, ongoing hybrid experiments, the constant low-level novelty generated by the Paragons’ reincarnation machine — but the denser, more incomplete layers now lay ahead and sideways.
Future.
Alternate.
Runar turned his perception toward them.
The future did not exist as a single fixed path. It existed as a vast, shifting cloud of probabilities, some dense and likely, others thin and fragile, all of them casting shadows backward into the present. Absolute Comprehension read those shadows with the same calm precision it applied to everything else.
He saw potential paths the Multiverse could take.
In one thick, probable branch, the Paragons’ system continued unchanged for countless more eras. Reincarnators kept colliding, hybrid systems kept emerging, and the watching Paragons kept absorbing the results. The Multiverse grew denser with novelty, but the growth was slow, controlled, and ultimately capped by the same limitations the early Paragons had accepted. Stagnation was not immediate, but it was inevitable. The machine would keep running. The ceiling would remain.
In another cluster of branches, conflict between high-level beings escalated beyond the Multiversal Center’s ability to manage. Competing Transcendent candidates, residual wills of dead universes, and newly risen hybrid monsters clashed on scales that shattered entire sectors. Some of those branches ended in cascading collapses that erased large portions of the Multiverse. Others stabilized into scarred, lower-energy states where power systems were fewer and weaker.
There were healthier paths as well.
In several less probable but still viable futures, the Multiverse slowly produced beings who stepped beyond the current Paragon and Transcendent frameworks without relying on the reincarnation harvest. These paths were quieter, rarer, and far more demanding. They required direct comprehension on a scale most existences could not begin to imagine.
The inhabitants of those multiverse only focused on comprehension and nothing else. No fight for resources or territory.
A handful of those branches led toward something that could only be called slow transcendence — not the forced ascent of a single individual, but a gradual elevation of the Multiverse’s overall baseline.
Runar read them all without preference.
Then the alternate timelines opened more fully.
These were not futures. They were parallel presents and divergent pasts that had branched away from the main structure at various points and continued to exist as overlapping possibilities. Absolute Comprehension moved through them as easily as it moved through the primary timeline.
He saw versions of himself.
In one alternate branch he had never left Willith’s Universe. He had remained there, growing strong within the local power system, protecting his family, and eventually reaching a respectable Multiversal level. That version of him was content, powerful by ordinary standards, and completely unaware of the wider machine. His potential had been real, but it had been spent locally.
In another branch he had entered the Multiversal Center’s system more deeply. He had accepted a tailored golden finger, followed the Paragons’ carefully managed path, and become one of their more successful harvested reincarnators. That version had risen quickly, contributed several valuable hybrid insights, and eventually been absorbed into the Center’s higher structure as a valued asset rather than a free existence. He had grown strong. He had never grown free.
There were versions that had gone further than his current position.
In several alternate timelines he saw himself already ascending beyond the Multiverse. The moment of ascent was clear in each case — a clean, decisive step that took that version of Runar outside the readable structure. From that instant onward, Absolute Comprehension could no longer follow them. Their futures became blank. Whatever they became after leaving the Multiverse was no longer part of the system he was currently digesting.
Runar observed those ascended versions with calm interest.
None of them were stronger than his current trajectory.
The realization settled quietly and absolutely. Those other versions had ascended, yes. Some had done so earlier. Some had done so through different methods. But the foundation they carried, the density of their principles, and the quality of the understanding they took with them were all inferior to what he was building now. They had left the Multiverse with less. His loop was still running. His two Supreme Principles were still evolving. The higher-order structures Origin Weave continued to generate had no equivalent in any of the alternate paths he could read.
His potential remained uniquely high.
Origin Weave responded to the new material.
Possibility itself began to register as a weaveable substance. The Supreme Principle that had already learned to refine origins and generate original structures now started treating potential futures and alternate branches as raw resources. It did not try to force any particular timeline into existence. Instead it extracted the most valuable conceptual patterns from the healthier branches and the more elegant alternate paths, then wove those patterns into new higher-order frameworks that existed independently of any specific future.
One new structure incorporated the quiet stability of a slow-transcendence path. Another distilled the aggressive novelty generation of a high-conflict branch without inheriting its self-destructive tendencies. A third took the clean decisiveness of the ascended alternate versions of himself and refined it into a principle of efficient departure — a framework for leaving a system without leaving unfinished business behind.
The loop accelerated again.
Absolute Comprehension fed on possibility. Origin Weave wove possibility into permanent structure. The new structures sharpened Comprehension further, allowing it to read even fainter and more incomplete branches. The cycle continued without strain.
Inside the sealed pocket dimension, the effects reached Celestia and Nyla once more.
Nyla was in the middle of aggressively testing a new branch of her curiosity engine when the inheritance suddenly opened a direction she had not forced. The new path carried a flavor of controlled chaos and long-term healthy growth — the exact conceptual pattern Runar had just extracted from one of the better future branches. Her eyes lit up with fierce delight. She laughed under her breath and dove into the new direction immediately, letting the engine challenge her and meeting every challenge with rising excitement.
"Oh, I like this one," she murmured to herself. "This one has teeth and patience at the same time."
Across the cloud-silk bed, Celestia’s storm lattice underwent a quieter change. A subtle stabilization ran through the entire living framework, smoothing several minor inefficiencies she had not yet noticed. The adjustment matched the elegant balance of an alternate timeline Runar had just finished reading — a version of elemental authority that achieved maximum effect with minimum waste. Celestia’s eyes remained closed, but a small, satisfied breath left her as the inheritance settled into a more perfect configuration.
Both women felt the familiar sensation of being subtly fed by something vast happening outside. Neither questioned it. They simply accepted the insight, refined it through their own efforts, and continued walking the paths that belonged to them.
Outside, in the void, Runar remained still.
The shadows of what might be continued to pour into the loop. Future possibilities and alternate realities were no longer external. They were material. Origin Weave treated them as such, and Absolute Comprehension continued to read every layer it could reach.
The past was finished.
The present was mapped.
The future and the alternate were still being consumed.
And none of the versions of himself that had already left the Multiverse carried a trajectory stronger than the one he was currently walking.
The realization required no emotion.
It was simply true.
The loop deepened further.
