My Ultimate Gacha System
Chapter 516 122 — St James' Park I
St James' Park didn't feel like Istanbul, and it wasn't supposed to.
There was no continental spectacle to it, no drums or flares timed for the cameras — just a stadium packed tight above the pitch, the noise sitting low and constant rather than building toward moments. It rose sharply the instant United tried to slow a restart, sharper still whenever Newcastle won a tackle anywhere near the touchline.
Demien had played through louder places by now. This wasn't about being intimidated. It was about making sure every instruction still carried the last five meters when the crowd decided to swallow it.
"Talk louder than you think you need to," Bruno told the midfield in the tunnel, raising his voice over the noise already leaking through the walls. "Nobody's going to hear the quiet version today."
Ten Hag gathered them one last time before the walkout. "Newcastle want this to become a chain of first contacts and second balls," he said. "Demien, you don't need to win every duel. You need to be in position for what happens after it. Wingers — track their overlapping fullbacks. If the midfield keeps getting dragged wide to cover for you, we lose the middle of the pitch completely."
MANCHESTER UNITED
Onana.
Wan-Bissaka — Maguire — Lindelöf — Shaw.
Demien — Mainoo.
Garnacho — Bruno — Rashford.
Højlund.
"You're not here to babysit him," Ten Hag told Mainoo directly, nodding at Demien. "You're another calm option on the ball. Let him take the second phases. That's his job today."
「PREMIER LEAGUE MATCH MISSION — NEWCASTLE UNITED」 「Second-Ball Recoveries: 6」 「Pressure Escapes: 5」 「Progressive Actions After Recovery: 5」 「Maintain 90%+ Pass Accuracy」 「TEAM OBJECTIVE: Win」 「Reward: +70 MP」
No goal requirement. No assist requirement. Just the collective problem, solved or not.
The referee started the match, and Newcastle came out exactly as advertised.
The opening stretch belonged entirely to the home side.
Newcastle didn't put one man across from Demien and hope for the best. They moved United around him instead. Isak dropped away from the center-backs almost immediately, and Demien had half a second to decide whether to follow.
He started to, then saw Guimarães already running beyond the space Isak had just vacated, and stopped himself.
Isak released it wide instead. Trippier got forward unmarked and drove a ball into the box. Maguire won the first header clean, but Newcastle recovered the loose ball before United could clear their own penalty area properly.
"They're not asking one midfielder to beat him," the commentator said. "They're asking the whole pitch to."
Newcastle's second wave came almost immediately, Gordon cutting inside and forcing a low shot that skimmed wide of the near post.
"Early warning," his co-commentator added. "United haven't had the ball for more than a few seconds at a time."
The pattern repeated for the next several minutes, Newcastle winning the second contact after nearly every United clearance, the crowd reacting to each recovered loose ball like it was a fresh attack rather than simple possession.
Mainoo had to deal with Joelinton arriving late and hard on one phase, shouting "Man on!" a beat too late for Demien to do anything but brace. Demien absorbed it and gave the ball away rather than force anything through the contact.
"Stay tight to me," Mainoo called across, resetting. "I'll take Joelinton, you watch the other two."
"Copy," Demien said.
Newcastle's first real chance to trap him came a few minutes later. He received from Maguire with Guimarães already angling in from one side, Joelinton arriving from behind a half-second after.
「TRAIT ACTIVATED」 「Press Resistant」
He'd checked his shoulder before the ball even arrived. His first touch took it across Guimarães's lunge, and he used his strength to stay upright through Joelinton's shoulder rather than get knocked off the ball. He didn't keep the dribble going just because he could — he released Mainoo immediately.
「MATCH MISSION PROGRESS」 「Pressure Escapes: 1/5」
Mainoo found Bruno in the same motion, and United suddenly had grass in front of them because half of Newcastle's press had committed to a ball that was already gone. Bruno slid it to Garnacho, who drove at the box and forced Pope into a save from a tight angle.
"United's first real look at goal," the commentator said, "and it comes from Walter refusing to be trapped in his own half."
The attack didn't change the overall shape of the game. Newcastle recovered from the goal kick and started forcing United backward again inside a minute.
Demien adjusted through the middle of the half rather than all at once.
Dropping deep to help every time United struggled only gave Newcastle another body to push forward against nobody. He started holding a few meters higher instead, trusting Mainoo to offer the first short option while he read where the second pass needed to go.
It gave United their first sustained spell of the match. Mainoo received from Maguire, found Demien once Joelinton stepped to close him, and Demien switched the point of attack before Trippier could trap Garnacho on the near touchline. United circulated through Shaw, into Bruno, back to Demien — nothing forced, nothing vertical for its own sake.
「LEGENDARY SKILL ACTIVATED」 「Toni Kroos — Metronome」
He kept changing the angle until Newcastle's compact shape finally had to stretch, and the gap opened for Bruno between the lines. Bruno released Højlund, whose shot was blocked by Schär before Newcastle cleared their lines.
St James' Park whistled at the delay, its own team being made to chase for the first time all half.
"That's the response," the co-commentator said. "Slow it down, make Newcastle do the running for a change."
It didn't last. Newcastle kept hunting the same idea — Isak dropping, then spinning away the instant Demien committed to him. On one sequence, Demien followed a step too far, and Guimarães found the space he'd left behind, forcing Mainoo across to cover.
United survived it, barely, and Demien filed the lesson without needing anyone to point it out. Newcastle weren't trying to beat him individually. They were trying to pull him out of the exact zone where the second ball would land.
He changed his answer after that. When Isak dropped, Demien passed him onto Mainoo or the nearest center-back rather than following automatically, holding a few yards off the duel instead.
It paid off on the next aerial contest. Maguire and Isak went up together, the ball dropping just outside United's box. Joelinton expected to arrive first.
Demien got there before him.
「TRAIT ACTIVATED」 「Ball Winner」
He took the second ball clean and released Garnacho immediately into the space Trippier had vacated pushing forward.
「MATCH MISSION PROGRESS」 「Second-Ball Recoveries: 2/6」 「Progressive Actions After Recovery: 1/5」
Garnacho carried, waited for Højlund's run, and slipped it inside — but the touch came slightly heavy, and Pope was out fast enough to smother it.
"First real sign United are starting to survive this rather than just absorb it," the commentator said.
Newcastle answered on the opposite flank. Gordon drifted infield and dragged Wan-Bissaka with him, opening the outside lane for Trippier. Demien stayed central because Guimarães had stepped forward, and abandoning that zone would have handed Newcastle a clean cutback through the middle instead.
Trippier got the space to deliver. The cross reached the far side, Onana getting enough of it to push the effort behind for a corner that came to nothing.
It was the kind of moment Demien couldn't personally erase without opening something worse. He'd made the right call centrally. Somebody else still had to deal with the winger.
Newcastle's biggest chance of the half came from a dead ball. A free kick just outside the box, won cheaply by Joelinton, gave Trippier a clean run-up in the thirty-ninth minute. He struck it over the wall, dipping late, and it cannoned off the underside of the crossbar before bouncing clear.
St James' Park rose as one, certain for a half-second that it had gone in.
"That's a goal nine times out of ten," the commentator said. "United have needed some fortune tonight, and they've just had a slice of it."
Demien gathered the midfield in during the stoppage that followed. "We're leaving one man isolated on every second ball," he said. "Stay closer. We can't keep conceding the space behind the first contact."
United's best spell of the half followed almost immediately. Demien escaped Joelinton once more without needing anything from the system this time, carried until Guimarães was forced to step, and found Bruno in behind him. Bruno combined with Rashford and forced another save out of Pope, low to his left.
The referee blew for halftime with the scoreline still level.
HALFTIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 0 — 0 MANCHESTER UNITED
The result flattered United more than the performance did. Newcastle had been the better side for most of the half, manipulating the space around Demien with real intent rather than simply hoping he'd have a bad day.
「MATCH MISSION PROGRESS」 「Second-Ball Recoveries: 3/6」 「Pressure Escapes: 3/5」 「Progressive Actions After Recovery: 2/5」 「Pass Accuracy: 93%」 「TEAM OBJECTIVE: 0-0」
Ten Hag kept the adjustment short in the away dressing room.
"Their fullbacks are getting too many free runs," he said, "because Garnacho and Rashford keep getting pulled inside by Gordon and Almirón. Recover deeper, both of you — that lets Demien stay central instead of getting dragged out to cover the flank every time."
He turned to Mainoo. "When they build through Guimarães, you step first. That frees Demien to read what happens next instead of being responsible for both the passer and the receiver."
"Understood," Mainoo said.
"Understood," Demien echoed.
United came out for the second half with the distances finally shorter.
When Newcastle went long, Mainoo competed for or screened the first header, and Demien started collecting more of what followed. When Newcastle pressed the buildup, he deliberately drew Joelinton toward him before switching the ball behind his run rather than trying to dribble past him outright.
One escape turned into a genuine chance. Demien received with Joelinton tight to his back, protected it, spun away, and switched immediately into Garnacho's path.
「MATCH MISSION PROGRESS」 「Pressure Escapes: 4/5」
Garnacho attacked down Trippier's side, Bruno arrived centrally, Højlund occupied both center-backs — a good chance, ultimately spurned when the final pass ran a fraction too heavy.
For a few minutes the match evened out properly, United finally matching Newcastle's territory rather than surviving it.
That was when Newcastle scored.
