My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 465: This Seems to Be a Coffin Room
Chapter 465: Chapter 465: This Seems to Be a Coffin Room
"Copy that!"
Evan Keller didn’t ask why. After hanging up, he picked a few people and got Zoe Sawyer to go with them.
Heath Hale had wanted to tag along, but Zoe Sawyer and Evan Keller stopped him.
He had injured his arm back on the high seas. They had only let him join the Zhang case because they knew he wouldn’t have to get physical during an arrest.
The situation with this new case was still unclear, so there was no way they were letting an injured man like Heath Hale come with them.
Thinking of this, Zoe Sawyer lowered her voice and asked as they walked over, "What’s going to happen with the female boss and her crew?"
’It’s been so long. They must have gotten all the answers they needed by now, right?’
"Not sure, but they’re still tight-lipped about some secret. The higher-ups are putting on the pressure.
Once they get it out of them, they’ll probably be sent back to the high seas." Evan Keller had heard a few things from the Chief, so he answered Zoe Sawyer’s question quickly and quietly.
Sent back to the high seas.
’That didn’t mean letting them go. It meant they’d be dealt with out there.’
’After all, dealing with them domestically might stir up international controversy.’
’On the high seas, though, it wouldn’t be an issue. Dog-eat-dog incidents out there are hardly rare.’
Once she understood the likely outcome, Zoe Sawyer stopped thinking about it. In her mind, the death of the female boss and her crew would be no great loss.
Soon, the group arrived at the Chief’s office. As soon as they entered, they saw a look of excitement and thrill on his face.
"Chief, we’re here. Is there a mission?" Evan Keller knocked, drawing the man’s attention before asking.
"Close the door. Then, take a look at this file." The Chief tapped his desk, gesturing for them to come closer.
Zoe Sawyer picked up the file. The first thing that caught her eye was a character sketch.
Following it were details of the related case.
"You know how a reporter published a story a few days ago about some of Sawyer’s cases? It mentioned how the ’door’ was used to rescue those abducted women and children.
Well, the fish took the bait!" The Chief pointed at the sketch in Zoe Sawyer’s hand, his voice laced with excitement. "This is a sketch of Mrs. Redding, who’s been a fugitive for thirty years. She abducted at least twenty children before completely disappearing. We’ve always wanted to bring her to justice, but we were hampered by a lack of evidence and didn’t even know what she looked like.
The officers in charge of her case never gave up. They investigated whenever they had a spare moment and finally, early last year, they locked on to three suspects.
We couldn’t be sure which one was the real Mrs. Redding, but after Sawyer’s story was published, one of them made a move! According to the surveillance team, the day after the report came out, this suspect packed her bags, claiming something had happened back home and she needed to go check on it."
Most of their forces were now deployed in the area, ensuring the suspect had no chance to escape.
It wasn’t just Evan Keller and his team; even Zoe Sawyer had heard numerous reports about the Mrs. Redding case.
Hearing now that a suspect couldn’t hold back and had made a move, she felt a surge of excitement.
"Chief, what do you need me to do?" Zoe Sawyer rubbed her hands together excitedly. Helping to catch Mrs. Redding would be a huge accomplishment!
"It’s nothing too major. Remember I said there were three suspects?
Even though one has made a move, the other two haven’t been cleared of suspicion yet. The team over there would like to ask you to ’listen in’ on the other two. Maybe you’ll find something new." The Chief relayed the other department’s request to Zoe Sawyer.
As for Evan Keller and the others, they had been called over as a precaution.
If an arrest needed to be made, they could go and help out.
As he spoke, the Chief handed a file that was beside him to Zoe Sawyer.
Zoe Sawyer took it, memorized the details of one of the suspects, then walked to the office door, gripped the handle, and closed her eyes.
Once the familiar sensation washed over her, Zoe Sawyer carefully pushed the door open.
On the other side of the door was a tidy living room.
Coffee table, sofa—everything was arranged with perfect neatness. It was the kind of order that would satisfy even someone with OCD. However, the living room curtains were all drawn, making the space feel oppressive despite the lights being on.
The second suspect was sitting upright on the sofa, watching the television in front of her with a calm expression.
However, Zoe Sawyer noticed that the TV was silently playing the clip of her own interview on a loop.
The woman’s fingers tapped her knee from time to time.
Ten minutes passed like this. Just as Zoe Sawyer thought she might have to wait another ten, Suspect Number Two stood up from the sofa and walked toward the kitchen.
’Getting something to eat? Or a drink?’
"The team over there has been monitoring Suspect Number Two’s movements. She doesn’t like to go out, and her child lives on the other side of the residential complex.
Usually, her daughter-in-law brings her groceries, or she buys daily necessities online. One thing is particularly noteworthy: whether she’s getting takeout or opening the door to throw out the trash, she always wears a pair of latex gloves. She even collects any hair that falls out while combing and burns it." Evan Keller took the file the Chief handed him and read from it while standing next to Zoe Sawyer. "This makes her seem like someone with severe germaphobia. Other than that, there’s been no unusual information from Suspect Number Two’s home network or communications."
"If she really has OCD, then she probably wouldn’t be crawling into a hole in the kitchen," Zoe Sawyer said, listening to Evan Keller read. She shifted her body slightly, revealing the scene on the other side of the door to everyone.
Since it was happening in real time, Evan Keller and the others could also see the situation on the other side.
They watched as Suspect Number Two opened a cabinet under the kitchen counter, bent down, removed a panel from inside, and then crawled straight through the opening.
Zoe Sawyer controlled the door, moving it along with the suspect.
She crawled through the kitchen cabinet into the adjacent apartment, where she retrieved a smartphone from beneath an altar.
"What’s the situation with the neighboring apartments?" Evan Keller asked, dumbfounded as he watched Suspect Number Two’s actions.
’Why does this place look like a coffin room?’
The Chief frowned and quickly dialed the police on the other end, asking about the apartment next to Suspect Number Two’s.
"The apartment next door? It was rented by a woman in her thirties. She registered with property management, stating she was using it to store some valuable furniture from her home.
She goes over every day to clean up a bit, confirms her furniture is still there, and then leaves." The team in charge of Suspect Number Two reported the relevant information to the Chief.
They were suspicious at first, so they posed as onlookers to get a look inside. The living room indeed seemed fine, filled with a lot of furniture. Plus, Suspect Number Two and the middle-aged woman who rented the place never had any contact from start to finish.
After investigating their personal connections and finding no overlap, they had ruled it out as a lead.
"This looks like a coffin home."
