Chapter 422: Chapter 422: Interrogation

Of course, he couldn’t say any of that, so Sean Hughes opted for a more ambiguous approach.

He also wanted to see if this kind of response would make the suspect overthink things, become suspicious, and—ideally—turn on her accomplices, bringing other matters to light.

Sure enough, things went more or less as Sean Hughes had planned.

Upon hearing such a noncommittal statement, Ms. Yorke’s first assumption was that Mr. Gary had cracked under interrogation and spilled everything.

"He’s a smart one, isn’t he? Knows what to say and what not to say." Sean Hughes shrugged, tapping his fingers on the tabletop as the corner of his mouth curved into a more pronounced smile.

Already furious, Ms. Yorke was in no mood to dissect Sean Hughes’s words for inconsistencies. She just lashed out with a kick.

But with the table in the way, she only ended up hurting herself.

"That damned Gary Dawson. I didn’t mind when he used my influence to throw his weight around, but to drag me into this mess..."

"If I’d known, I should have just killed him..." Ms. Yorke barely mouthed the last two words, but given what she’d just said and the look on her face, Sean Hughes could easily guess her meaning.

Sean Hughes tapped the table in front of her, pulling Ms. Yorke’s attention back to him. "The police are giving you a chance to confess in exchange for a lighter sentence. Whether you can get a reduced sentence is up to you."

Ms. Yorke let out a cold laugh. "I don’t know anything. What is it you want to ask?"

"I told you, I have a medical condition. If something happens to me, can you take responsibility? Let me go, now! Or I’ll die right here in your station!"

’Patient Dies of Heart Attack After Being Arrested by Police.’

’With her father’s connections on top of that, she could definitely make these cops pay dearly!’

Sean Hughes wasn’t the least bit surprised by her refusal to cooperate.

"We’re aware of your medical history," Sean Hughes said, gesturing to the side with a sincere tone. "That’s why there’s a room next door with a full set of medical equipment. If you start to feel unwell, we can get you immediate treatment."

’Was she kidding? After learning about Ms. Yorke’s condition, the department had naturally made all necessary preparations. There was no way they’d let a suspect have a medical emergency on their watch.’

’Whatever little tricks she had up her sleeve, they wouldn’t work here!’

Sure enough, upon hearing Sean Hughes’s words, the smug look on Ms. Yorke’s face vanished, replaced by a glare of pure hatred.

’Damn it. They actually brought a doctor.’

’So much for trying to pull anything.’

"You can choose to say nothing," Sean said. "We have other ways of getting leads."

"But if you refuse to cooperate, you can forget about a reduced sentence later. I’m giving you one last chance. Either cooperate with our investigation and tell us everything you know, or keep your mouth shut." Sean Hughes had no time to waste on these people. He rapped his knuckles on the table, giving Ms. Yorke an ultimatum.

’They had to figure out that route as quickly as possible.’

As soon as they’d caught the two men who’d come for the pickup, the station had begun investigating all monitored roads in the vicinity. They were trying to determine where the vehicle came from and what route it had taken.

But they hadn’t given up on Ms. Yorke, either. Pushing from multiple angles was the surest way to get answers quickly.

And if all else failed, there was Zoe Sawyer. Even without a confession from this group, they could still figure it out with her help; it would just take longer.

Sean Hughes and his team had originally wanted to solve it themselves if they could, without bothering Zoe Sawyer unless it was absolutely necessary.

But the situation was different now. If Ms. Yorke and her people refused to cooperate, the time-sensitive nature of the lead meant they had no choice but to go to Zoe Sawyer.

Ms. Yorke’s expression showed a hint of conflict, but in the end, she gritted her teeth and insisted she knew nothing, telling Sean Hughes and the others to just let her go.

Realizing he wasn’t going to get any leads from Ms. Yorke for the time being, Sean Hughes didn’t waste any more time and left the interrogation room with two other officers.

"Captain Hughes, what’s our next move? We can’t just keep wasting time with these people, can we?" a junior officer beside him asked, running a hand through his hair in frustration after they left the interrogation room. "If we don’t hurry, I’m worried their ’boss’ will realize something’s up and destroy the route."

A huge lead was right in front of them, yet they were powerless. They might even have to watch it slip away. The feeling was just awful.

"Don’t worry, they won’t get away," Sean said. "Take some men and go interrogate Gary Dawson again. The other guy probably knows a lot, too, so don’t overlook him."

"Also, arrange for someone to check on the children and figure out their identities and where they came from." Sean Hughes delegated the immediate tasks, and once he was sure everyone understood, he hurried off to the side and called Zoe Sawyer.

"Zoe, are you free right now? I need a favor!"

Zoe Sawyer had just sat down to take a few sips of water when she heard the urgency in Sean Hughes’s voice. "I’m free," she said quickly. "What’s wrong?"

Sean Hughes quickly explained the situation. "Could you give it a try first? It would be best if you can find it. If not, I’ll go back to grilling these suspects."

"No problem. I know what to do."

"I’ll give it a shot and see what happens." Zoe Sawyer agreed without hesitation.

’She could hear the urgency in Sean Hughes’s voice. Ms. Yorke’s father must have some serious pull to have established a route like this right under the police’s nose.’

’Illicit things were being smuggled in through this route. For starters, those kids were probably brought in this way.’

’If they could map out this route sooner, they might be able to catch more of the people involved and rescue others in the same situation as those children.’

After she hung up, Heath Hale handed her an opened energy drink. "Have some of this. Today’s been pretty intense. Drink up and get your strength back."

Zoe Sawyer accepted it, took a few sips, and set it aside.

Time was of the essence, and with everyone working so hard, Zoe Sawyer didn’t feel right taking a break.

Meanwhile, just as Sean Hughes returned to the door of Ms. Yorke’s interrogation room after his call with Zoe Sawyer, a junior officer hurried over from the other direction.

The officer stopped in front of him, his voice tinged with excitement. "We just got word from the hospital! The kids are awake. We sent two female officers who speak English to communicate with them. The video has already been sent back. Captain Hughes, do you want to come see?"

Hearing this, Sean Hughes couldn’t stand still. He immediately urged the junior officer to take him to see it.

"Quick, take me there now!"
