My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 420: The Arrest
Chapter 420: Chapter 420: The Arrest
"Rest assured, Ms. Yorke. I know what to do," the young man said, patting his chest in assurance.
’Just taking care of a few kids. Easy peasy!’
Ms. Yorke seemed to have great confidence in the young man’s abilities. She gave him a knowing look before turning and leaving the room.
After she left, the young man rolled his shoulders, pulled a folding knife from his pocket, and started fiddling with it.
"What a shame. A few cute kids, too. To think they’re going to die here just like that." The young man’s face was a mask of regret, but his feet never stopped moving. He advanced step by step toward the children in the corner.
Although the children couldn’t understand the young man’s words, they could guess his intentions from the look on his face and the knife in his hand.
’This man wants to kill us!’
But their hands and feet were bound with iron chains. Struggling free was impossible.
In their extreme terror, the children huddled together as tightly as they could, turning their backs to the young man as if they couldn’t see him.
’If we can’t see him, we won’t be afraid!’
Just as the young man was a mere three steps from the children, the hand raising the knife froze. His eyes went wide, and he toppled over, stiff as a board.
Zoe Sawyer had been monitoring the situation in the room, giving Heath Hale, who was beside her, a running update.
When she heard that Ms. Yorke, Mr. Gary’s wife, was about to abandon her husband and escape via a secret route her father had operated for years, she immediately informed Heath Hale.
Heath Hale quickly relayed the information to Sean Hughes, telling her to take her team and intercept them as fast as possible.
Then, she saw the young man was about to attack the children.
The man’s back was turned, and the terrified children were huddled in a ball, unable to see what was happening.
Seizing the opportunity, Zoe Sawyer grabbed a tranquilizer gun from a nearby shelf, aimed at the young man, and fired.
The heavy thud of the man’s body hitting the floor startled the children.
But whether out of fear or from having been beaten too many times before, they didn’t dare turn around. They remained huddled together.
"We can’t waste time here," Heath Hale said softly, walking over to Zoe Sawyer. "Sean Hughes and her team are still a few minutes out. Go check on Ms. Yorke."
A few minutes might not seem like much, but that short window of time is often the difference between the police catching a criminal and letting them slip away.
Zoe Sawyer nodded. To be on the safe side, she aimed at the man on the floor and shot him with the tranquilizer gun again.
This would ensure he wouldn’t wake up before the police arrived.
Once that was done, Zoe Sawyer began cycling through the security feeds, focusing on the most lavishly decorated rooms on the second and third floors.
’She had reasoned that since the couple was brazen enough to imprison and harm children in their own home, they must be extremely confident in the house’s security.’
’In that case, they certainly wouldn’t be roughing it. Their personal rooms should be easy to find.’
As it turned out, Zoe’s theory was correct.
She quickly spotted Ms. Yorke in a room on the second floor.
Ms. Yorke was sprawled on the floor, reaching for something under the bed.
"Gary Dawson, that bastard. Why’d he stuff everything under here? It’s impossible to reach.
It’s a good hiding spot, I’ll give him that, but now I can’t even get it!" Ms. Yorke muttered, straining to reach further under the bed.
At a signal from Heath Hale, Zoe Sawyer raised the tranquilizer gun, aimed for Ms. Yorke’s hand, and fired.
The woman, who had been muttering curses, suddenly went quiet. Her eyes rolled back in her head, and she passed out.
She remained in the same position, half-sprawled by the bed, completely unaware that the men waiting for her in the courtyard were growing frantic.
"Why isn’t she down yet? If we don’t get going, we’re going to run out of time!" a man standing by the car snapped, glancing at his phone. His voice and expression were laced with impatience.
The man in the driver’s seat also looked anxious, but he was holding it together better.
He felt his pocket for a cigarette but pulled out a mint instead, chewing on it thoughtfully. "Just a little longer.
The Young Miss has been pampered since birth. Plus, the Boss left a lot of stuff here for her. It’s going to take time to pack.
We’ll wait five more minutes. If she’s not out by then, we’re leaving."
’Those were the Boss’s orders, after all.’
’If they couldn’t pick her up within the designated time, the two of them were to leave immediately and take the hidden route to the rendezvous point.’
’They knew too much to risk getting caught by the cops.’
’As for the Young Miss...’ The driver recalled the Boss’s cold voice on the phone and sneered inwardly.
’Now that the Boss had grandchildren who were far more capable, cunning, and resourceful than his daughter...’
’...much better than this useless couple who only knew how to run a casino and kidnap children, leaving the Boss to clean up their messes.’
’With a clear line of succession, the Boss surely knew how to maximize his own interests.’
"Good, good. I was just worried the Boss would punish us if anything happened to the Young Miss on our watch," the man outside the car said, grinding his shoe into the pavement. There was a subtle note of relief in his voice.
While they waited anxiously, Sean Hughes, along with her team and colleagues from the local precinct, began to quietly surround the house.
Normally, the Yorke family home was under twenty-four-hour surveillance.
But as luck would have it, the man in charge of the monitors was the same one Zoe Sawyer had just tranquilized.
And because of the... special nature of their business, the Yorke family didn’t employ any servants, fearing they might notice something was amiss.
The two men in the yard, likely assuming the police wouldn’t find them anytime soon, had let their guard down and failed to notice what was happening behind them.
Thus, due to a combination of factors, Sean Hughes and her team managed to creep right up to the courtyard gate without being detected.
On Sean Hughes’s signal, a team member raised their weapon and shot out the car’s two rear tires, eliminating any chance of a vehicular escape.
As the tires rapidly deflated, the man in the car was the first to realize something was wrong. He called out to his partner to go check it out.
When he turned, he saw them: police officers, standing right behind them.
Every officer had their weapon raised, their faces grim as they stared them down. They began to slowly spread out, fanning across the yard.
They were simultaneously ensuring their own safety and cutting off every possible escape route.
"Police! Hands on your head! Get down!"
Sean Hughes advanced quickly, her weapon raised.
The two men considered resisting, but they were surrounded by police, all watching them like hawks. If they so much as twitched, several guns would be shoved in their faces.
With no other choice, the two men followed Sean Hughes’s orders, walked to a clear spot nearby, and got on the ground, hands on their heads.
"One team, watch them and secure the scene. The rest of you, with me. We’re going in."
