Chapter 418: Chapter 418: Amen, Help Me

Mr. Gary’s face was completely expressionless. It was just one dead person. What was the big deal?

He’d gotten his hands dirty overseas before. It was nothing.

Besides, plenty of people had died behind the scenes for all sorts of reasons because of his casino. If he got worked up over every single one, he might as well close up shop and open an orphanage instead.

Though that’s what he was thinking, Mr. Gary kept his expression neutral. He stared at the crime scene photo Sean Hughes had pushed toward him and asked flatly, "Who’s this?"

"His face looks so much like Kai Thorne’s, and you’re asking who this is?" Sean Hughes pointed at Marcus Thompson’s partially exposed face, raising an eyebrow at Mr. Gary, who sat opposite him.

If he didn’t already know the role Mr. Gary played in all this, seeing his completely unfazed expression could easily fool someone into thinking he was clueless.

Besides, seeing a dead body that looked identical to a friend but had a different name would make even the calmest person show a flicker of surprise.

But this Mr. Gary showed no emotion from start to finish, as if he’d known all along.

Or rather, as if he were long used to it.

"You just said his name is Marcus Thompson, not Kai Thorne, so how would I know who he is? You didn’t bring me here just to talk about this, did you?

Officers, I really don’t know anything. If you don’t let me go soon, my wife won’t be able to reach me, and she’ll come looking for me.

She’s not in good health. If anything happens to her because of this, that’s a responsibility you can’t afford to bear." Mr. Gary’s expression relaxed slightly, and he was even in the mood to start threatening Sean Hughes and the others.

’If these cops arrested me just to talk about this, then I probably don’t have much to worry about.’

’But once I get out of here, I need to figure out what’s going on with this Kai Thorne. He can go ahead and kill someone, but why the hell did he have to drop my name!’

’I’ll have to teach him a lesson. Next time he wants my help, that little bit of money won’t be enough!’

’I’ll need at least half his fortune. Anything less would be an insult after getting dragged into the police station today.’

’And most importantly, I hope that woman is smart enough to react quickly when she can’t reach me and handles the clean-up. If the police really get their hands on some leverage, we’re the ones who’ll end up dead!’

As Mr. Gary ran through his calculations, he failed to notice that the expression of the man sitting across from him, Sean Hughes, was growing darker and darker.

"You better fix that attitude! Do you think we’d arrest someone without concrete evidence?

Your underlings have already been apprehended, and we also know you were scheming to get your hands on Marcus Thompson’s two children. Gary Dawson, I’m telling you, don’t you underestimate us police." Sean Hughes slammed his hand on the table, his eyes fixed on Mr. Gary.

Hearing Sean Hughes’s words, Mr. Gary, who had been completely unconcerned just a moment ago, was inwardly shocked.

’What’s going on?’

’How could these cops possibly know about my... proclivities?’

’No, no. I’ve seen it on TV shows. Sometimes the police have no evidence, just a guess, and they’ll bluff to make the person being interrogated think they’ve been caught. Then, hoping for a lenient sentence, the suspect obediently spills everything they know.’

’They’re probably just trying to trick me this time, too!’

’Can’t say anything. I can’t say anything.’

Mr. Gary frantically repeated the mantra to himself, but his previously relaxed body had tensed up considerably.

"I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m just an ordinary, law-abiding citizen. The worst I’ve ever done is enjoy a foot massage now and then." Mr. Gary’s voice was still even, but if you listened closely, you could hear the tension in it.

Sean Hughes didn’t reply. He stood up straight, looking down at Mr. Gary. "Still unrepentant. We’re giving you a chance and you’re not taking it. Don’t come crying to us when we lay the evidence out in front of you."

With that, ignoring Mr. Gary’s reaction, Sean Hughes walked out with the other officers.

Just outside the interrogation room, one of the local station’s officers asked worriedly, "Captain Hughes, do you have any leads?"

The suspect was refusing to cooperate, and judging by his attitude, finding evidence was going to be difficult.

What if the legal detention period ran out before they found any evidence?

Once Mr. Gary was on high alert, catching him again wouldn’t be so easy.

Sean Hughes let out a long breath, then waved to the others beside him. "I’m going to make a call to report on the situation. Don’t worry. This Mr. Gary, he’s not getting away.

We acted on a reliable intelligence source. There’s no way we’re letting a monster like him walk out of this station!"

After getting this definitive answer, the local officers breathed a collective sigh of relief. As long as there was evidence, it would be fine.

Only a few hours had passed since they received the order to assist and arrested the suspect.

There were still many things they didn’t understand.

But since the people from up top had a plan, all they had to do was follow orders.

"Thank you for your hard work. You should all get some rest. We’ll contact you as soon as we have a new lead," Sean Hughes said to the officers standing nearby, his tone humble.

The officer who had asked the question quickly waved his hands. "It’s our duty. Well, we won’t disturb you and your team then, Captain Hughes. If you need any help, please let us know."

Sean Hughes and his team found a quiet spot and called Zoe Sawyer to update her on the situation.

Finally, Sean Hughes said, "Zoe, would it be possible for you to help us find a breakthrough with Mr. Gary?

On our own, we might not have enough time."

This Mr. Gary had some influence in the area. If they couldn’t produce enough evidence in time, he might use media pressure to force the police to release him.

"I’ll try right now." Zoe Sawyer agreed to the request. After hanging up, she confirmed that she wasn’t needed for the arrest of the short man on the other side, and turned her attention to Mr. Gary.

Grasping the doorknob, Zoe Sawyer replayed Mr. Gary’s appearance and basic information in her mind.

But that alone wasn’t enough. Without more specific information, the door couldn’t provide an accurate location, let alone find the leverage they needed on Mr. Gary.

Zoe Sawyer grew anxious and started chanting in her mind: ’Help me, please help me. Help me pinpoint the time and place where Gary Dawson forced himself on those children.’

In the end, it became a mantra in her mind, repeating Mr. Gary’s name and the word "children."

More than ten minutes passed, and the door remained still. Just as Zoe Sawyer was about to lose hope, the doorknob glowed faintly, and then that familiar sensation washed over her again.

Zoe Sawyer’s eyes flew open in delightful surprise. ’Did... did it work?’

Without hesitation, Zoe Sawyer immediately opened the door.

"You damned little brat, shut up!"
