Chapter 179: The Obsidian Gates

The royal gardens were a strange, unsettling juxtaposition of pristine nature and creeping corruption.

Dawn cast a pale, watery light over the manicured hedges and white marble fountains, but the water in those basins had turned stagnant and gray.

Leon marched at the center of the formation, his heavy blunt weapon resting securely against his shoulder. The air here was entirely devoid of the usual morning birdsong. The silence felt oppressive, hanging over the strike team like a physical weight.

Seraphina walked to his right, her crimson armor catching the faint sunlight. The silver-haired warlord kept her violet eyes fixed directly on the towering entrance of the inner keep. She was a woman returning to reclaim her stolen home, and her elemental aura crackled with tightly controlled fury.

Behind them, Beatrice and Elara maintained a flawless rear guard. The ice and fire magic pooling around their hands served as a silent warning to any surviving loyalists who might be foolish enough to stage an ambush.

Isolde and Valeriana flanked the center. The Emerald Knight’s rapier hummed with vibrant green energy, while the beautiful spy clutched a small set of throwing knives she had commandeered from the armory.

"The perimeter is completely abandoned," Isolde noted, her gaze darting between the ornate statues lining the path. "Morgana pulled everyone inside. She knows her external batteries are gone."

"A trapped rat always retreats to the deepest hole," Seraphina replied, her voice echoing sharply against the stone pathway. "It just makes them easier to corner."

They reached the end of the sprawling garden, arriving at a massive elevated courtyard that served as the final threshold. A sweeping staircase of polished black stone led up to a pair of colossal obsidian doors.

The gates to the throne room were legendary in the capital. They were forged from rare meteor rock, designed to withstand a direct siege from a hostile army. Usually, a dozen Imperial Executioners guarded this landing. Today, the steps were entirely empty.

Leon stopped at the base of the stairs, sensing the residual magical residue clinging to the heavy metal doors.

A familiar digital chime rang in his ears. The floating interface did not use its standard bright pink formatting this time, instead opting for a sleek, golden border that hovered directly in front of Seraphina’s armored chest.

[System Notice: The Rightful Warlord]

[The silver goddess is preparing to kick down the doors of her ancestors. The emotional weight of this moment is threatening to unbalance her focus. Anchor her to reality.]

[Objective: Step in front of her. Gently tap the center of her breastplate with your knuckles, look into her eyes, and remind her that she does not walk this path alone.]

[Reward: +20 Charisma, 450 Shameless Points.]

Leon barely glanced at the floating text. He didn’t care about whatever trivial penalty the system had cooked up. He could see the subtle tension tightening Seraphina’s jaw, a rare crack in her fierce exterior.

He moved smoothly, stepping directly into her path.

Seraphina halted, blinking in surprise as his towering frame blocked her view of the obsidian gates. Her violet eyes searched his face, expecting a tactical warning about hidden traps.

Instead, Leon reached out. He curled his fingers and lightly tapped his calloused knuckles against the crimson metal protecting her heart.

"You do not walk this path alone, Seraphina," he murmured, his deep voice carrying a quiet, unshakeable certainty.

The simple, grounding gesture bypassed her aristocratic defenses entirely. The fierce warlord let out a slow, trembling breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. The tension melted from her shoulders, replaced by a radiant, deeply rooted confidence.

She reached up, resting her pale hand over his rough knuckles. A soft, genuine smile curved her lips, completely transforming her hardened features into something breathtakingly beautiful.

"I know," she whispered, her voice laced with profound affection. "Now step aside, Warden. We have a door to break."

The interface dissolved, feeding a fresh surge of magnetic appeal into his veins. His Charisma spiked, but Leon simply admired the fierce determination returning to the woman he served.

He stepped back, gesturing toward the towering gates with a mock, gentlemanly bow.

Seraphina ascended the black stone stairs with flawless grace. She did not bother searching for a handle or a mechanical lock. The heavy doors were sealed by ancient imperial wards, complex arrays designed to repel unauthorized entry.

She raised her broadsword with both hands. The Tier One Grandmaster tapped into the volcanic depths of her newly forged core. A brilliant, blinding wave of crimson heat erupted from the steel, warping the very air around her.

She unleashed a devastating, horizontal slash directly at the seam of the massive doors.

The concentrated elemental fire collided with the meteor rock. The ancient wards shrieked, glowing a violent purple for a fraction of a second before the sheer, overwhelming heat incinerated the magical containment.

The obsidian doors groaned in structural agony. The metal superheated, glowing bright orange as the massive hinges buckled and snapped.

With a deafening crash, the heavy gates tumbled inward, slamming against the polished marble floors of the antechamber.

The strike team walked through the smoking threshold, their weapons drawn and ready.

The antechamber was a vast, cavernous room designed to awe visiting diplomats. High, vaulted ceilings were painted with intricate murals of the empire’s founding. However, the beautiful artwork was currently obscured by a thick, unnatural shadow that clung to the corners of the room.

Standing in the absolute center of the grand hall was Silas.

The Syndicate Cleaner did not look like an untouchable god anymore. His immaculate white suit was covered in gray dust and soot from the collapsing aqueducts. A thin line of dried blood marked his pale forehead, proving that the subterranean avalanche had indeed managed to scratch him.

The arrogant, bored indifference was entirely gone from his pale eyes. He stared at the strike team with a cold, concentrated fury.

"You severed the anchors," Silas stated, his voice lacking its previous booming resonance. "You ruined a decade of careful preparation."

"We are just getting started," Leon replied, stepping forward and bringing his heavy steel blade up to a ready position. "Your batteries are dead, Silas. You are just a man again."

"A man who has mastered the art of killing long before you learned how to walk," the Cleaner sneered, raising his gloved hands.

The final obstacle standing between the warlords and the High Priestess was ready to fight to the death.
