My Most Beautiful Fiancée

Chapter 367 366: Pay Close Attention

Mu Lin went downstairs and found Yun Cheng and his team members still standing in place, unwilling to leave. He couldn't help but ask,

"Captain Yun, why aren't you leaving?"

"If Mr. Mu isn't leaving, how could I dare to?"

Mu Lin sighed and said, "I just remembered something. I came to Lanyang primarily to investigate the disappearance of Xu Jishan and his son. You all certainly have more resources, so could you help me keep an eye out?"

Yun Cheng's expression changed. He said, stunned, "Isn't he the Patriarch of the Di Yang Xu Family? They're in trouble?"

"Yes," Mu Lin said. "Team Leader Jiang entrusted me with the investigation. It's the main reason I came to Lanyang, but I didn't expect to get sidetracked by other affairs."

"Now that my hands are free, I'd still like to find the Xu father and son as soon as possible. Team Leader Jiang said a powerhouse at the Grandmaster level might be involved."

Yun Cheng narrowed his eyes, pondered seriously for a moment, then said,

"But there's nothing special about that father and son from the Xu Family. The Military Suppression Bureau hasn't even assigned them a serial number. It would be truly bizarre if they managed to provoke a Grandmaster into action!"

"I haven't investigated them in detail, so I'm not sure," Mu Lin said. "How about you help me keep an eye on this, Captain Yun?"

Yun Cheng agreed readily. "Yes, of course. I'll definitely keep a close watch."

'He had been worrying about how to maintain a long-term connection with Mu Lin. Now that an opportunity had presented itself, he had to grab it, didn't he?'

"Thank you for your trouble," Mu Lin said, giving Captain Yun a polite bow, which thoroughly frightened Yun Cheng and his team members.

"Mr. Mu, please don't! Now you're making us feel awkward!" they exclaimed hastily.

Mu Lin chuckled and bid them farewell.

He hadn't walked far when his phone rang. Mu Lin glanced at the screen and saw it was He Zongshan. He had no idea what business he might have with him.

Mu Lin answered the phone. "Chairman He, what can I do for you?"

He Zongshan said urgently, "Mr. Mu, are your medical skills exceptionally good?"

The question made Mu Lin a little uncomfortable. "They're average, I suppose. Just enough to cure common ailments."

But to He Zongshan's ears, those words meant something else entirely. He sounded like he was grasping at straws, saying,

"Mr. Mu, where are you? I'll come see you right now!"

'I'm not busy anyway,' Mu Lin thought. He gave He Zongshan a location and started heading there himself.

'As for the location of his own residential complex, it was best not to tell He Zongshan. The man wasn't trustworthy.'

After he arrived and waited for a while, He Zongshan rushed over in a luxury car.

The moment he stepped out of the car, he knelt before Mu Lin.

Mu Lin was a little dumbfounded by the sight. 'The incredibly arrogant He Zongshan is kneeling to me?'

"Chairman He, what is the meaning of this?"

Mu Lin pressed.

"To be honest with you," He Zongshan said, "my mother has been receiving treatment at Lanyang Third Hospital! The only reason I've been hustling in this world is because Elder Deng promised me that if I served him, he would help get my mother treated. After ten years, he would give me the life-saving Spirit Medicine."

Mu Lin was very sensitive to names. "Elder Deng? What kind of person is he?"

"Elder Deng is a major figure here in Lanyang. He has many methods and immense influence; I wouldn't dare provoke him. With a wave of his hand, he can dispatch experts at the Grandmaster level. Many Grandmasters work for him, acting respectfully, like dogs... How could Little Martial Artists like us dare to defy him?"

Mu Lin narrowed his eyes. That was a novel claim. Although Lanyang wasn't a big place, achieving something like that would still be quite difficult.

'This Elder Deng... is rather interesting.'

"So, what illness does your mother have? Tell me about it."

He Zongshan's heart was in turmoil. He had originally thought Mu Lin wouldn't agree to treat his mother and was already prepared to give up.

But as it turned out, Mu Lin was actually willing to help. This was simply the best news he could have possibly received.

He described her condition in detail. Mu Lin waved his hand. "Take me to the hospital. I'll go take a look at the situation."

"Yes, yes!" He Zongshan said.

Mu Lin immediately got into He Zongshan's car, and they sped toward the hospital.

The nurses at the hospital were already very familiar with He Zongshan. One nodded to him, led him to the room, and then walked away nonchalantly.

Mu Lin glanced around the room, scanned it with his spiritual sense, and finally placed his fingers on the patient's wrist to take her pulse.

"Chairman He," Mu Lin called out.

He Zongshan hurried over. "What is it?"

"Go process her discharge from the hospital."

He Zongshan was suddenly thrown into a panic. He asked anxiously, "Mr. Mu, why? My mother is... why discharge her? Is she...?"

Mu Lin raised a hand to stop He Zongshan. "She's fine, there's nothing wrong. It's just that if she stays in this hospital, she will never get better."

Hearing this, He Zongshan grew even more panicked. "Mr. Mu, you have to explain it to me. What does that mean? What do you mean, 'never get better'?"

"Your mother isn't sick," Mu Lin said. "On the contrary, she's been kept in a drugged stupor. Someone bribed a doctor here to give her a sedative. It's administered daily, and its effects are so gradual and subtle that it's impossible to notice without a very careful examination."

"You're a Grandmaster Powerhouse yourself, and you didn't see anything, did you?"

Cold sweat beaded on He Zongshan's forehead as he listened. He never imagined that his filial devotion was all part of such a huge trap.

"The worst part is that an overdose of this drug can cause a person to fall into a lifelong sleep, turning them into a vegetable. Your mother's body has been corroded by this sedative for some time now. Any later, and even I wouldn't have been able to do anything."

He Zongshan's face changed dramatically, twisting in anger. "Who could be so wicked? Why would they frame my family like this? Did I offend them somehow?"

Mu Lin watched him with a calm gaze. Suddenly, He Zongshan felt something was off. He shuddered, then went silently to handle the discharge papers.

Mu Lin stood waiting. A few doctors walked over, saw him standing at the doorway of the patient room, and gave him a look up and down.

"Who are you? What do you think you're doing standing here? Get out, now!"

The doctor, an older man leading several younger physicians, scolded him.

"I am a friend of He Zongshan's, here to visit his mother," Mu Lin said calmly.

Another doctor, slightly younger but already middle-aged, said,

"The patient needs to rest. You're disturbing her by being here. Get out, or I'll have security escort you out!"

Mu Lin sneered. "Are you really trying to save her? Or are you trying to harm her? She should be waking up soon, shouldn't she? Is it about time to give her the sedative?"

The two doctors' expressions changed several times, but they eventually composed themselves. The older one raised his voice, pointing at Mu Lin as he yelled,

"What nonsense are you spouting? I don't understand a single word you're saying."

He Zongshan returned, striding in with a look of disbelief. "What's with these idiots? They're saying I owe the hospital money and won't let me process the discharge. Damn it, did the ten million I prepaid run out already?"

As He Zongshan neared the room, he saw the group of doctors. He hadn't expected them to be here at this hour.

"Dean, are you making rounds with your students?"

The old doctor snorted, then pointed at He Zongshan and rebuked him.

"Mr. He, they say you're a model of filial piety, but is this how you care for your mother? You let a complete stranger brazenly stand at her bedside without any precautions?"

This man was the hospital's dean, Wei Dingguo.

He Zongshan recalled Mu Lin's words, and seeing Wei Dingguo's intense reaction, a possibility suddenly flashed through his mind.

He said, "Dean, I'm the one asking the questions here. Answer me honestly: who told you to give my mother sedatives?"

"I see you didn't bring your students here to treat a patient. You clearly came to harm my mother!"

He Zongshan spoke with such conviction that it flustered Wei Dingguo. The things he did were known only to a select few.

'How did a country bumpkin like He Zongshan find out?'

He Zongshan was a Grandmaster, after all, and his grasp of details was formidable. He immediately noticed a flash of fear and guilt on Wei Dingguo's face.

This proved that everything Mu Lin had said was true. This man had really committed such an inhuman act.

He Zongshan's face twisted in fury. He lunged forward, intending to kill Wei Dingguo with a single palm strike.

'This old bastard dared to do this to his own mother. His crime is unforgivable!'

But just as his palm was about to strike home, with Wei Dingguo on the verge of death, one of the doctors beside him stepped forward to block the blow.
