Chapter 57: Chapter 58: Wolves Ahead, Tigers Behind, Killing Intent in the Night
Ten days passed.
In a courtyard in Lanye Town, Wei Jie frowned as he listened to his subordinate’s report.
Ever since Su Chen last appeared, his men had not found any trace of him in town. It was as if he had truly just come to make a brief appearance, vanishing without a trace after catching Wei Jie’s attention.
Besides Su Chen, another person had also disappeared: an old man who had shown up in Lanye Town shortly after Su Chen’s departure. Like Su Chen, this man had only been in town for half a day before disappearing completely.
At first, Wei Jie assumed the old man belonged to the Government Office and had specifically come to Lanye Town to gather intelligence. However, as time went on, a new thought occurred to him.
"Is it possible that Yang Guo and the old man are the same person in disguise?" he wondered.
It was not entirely impossible. After all, it was common for a Martial Artist to wear disguises.
"Guardian Dharma."
Wei Jie called his subordinate over and instructed, "Investigate whether any new unfamiliar faces have appeared in town over the past ten days. That includes old men, middle-aged men, and... women!"
"Yes, sir!"
"Wait. Have someone look into this ’Yang Guo’ again. I want detailed information on him—everything from his birth to the present. Leave no stone unturned!"
"Understood!"
Five more days passed.
After observing continuously for half a month, Su Chen finally found some clues and located Wei Jie’s residence. Unfortunately, he could not find an opportunity to strike. Much like Liu Tong, Wei Jie rarely left the house. He spent every day either practicing martial arts in the courtyard or doing heaven knew what in his room.
Just as Su Chen began to think that he might not catch a glimpse of the man even if he staked out the place for another half month, the situation took a turn.
That evening, Su Chen noticed flames lighting up the sky from within the courtyard. People were constantly going in and out, making a massive commotion. The noise did not die down until late into the night—not because they had finished, but because it seemed they were about to leave.
Su Chen watched as Wei Jie, who had not stepped out for a full half month, finally made an appearance. Leading a group of men and escorting a batch of large wooden chests, Wei Jie departed from Lanye Town.
Shortly after they left, Su Chen thought for a moment before deciding to follow them and see what they were up to, keeping a safe distance from Wei Jie’s group the entire way.
Two hours later, Wei Jie finally stopped at the top of a hill.
"Guardian Dharma, why is it just you this time? Where is Protector Sun?"
A figure emerged from the shadows. The man was dressed in black with rugged facial features, his fierce eyes sweeping over Wei Jie and his men.
Wei Jie’s gaze sharpened slightly upon seeing the newcomer. "He has other matters to attend to. I’ve brought the goods. How are your preparations coming along?"
"We’ve naturally been ready for a while. Now that the goods are here, it won’t be long before we can make our move," the man in black said in a low voice.
"Alright, then let’s not waste time. Take the goods," Wei Jie said, waving his hand.
"No rush." The man in black stopped him. He looked at Wei Jie and asked, "Are these men of yours reliable?"
"They’ve all followed me for years. What do you think?" Wei Jie retorted, glancing at him.
"Haha, don’t be angry, I was just asking." The man in black smiled, ignoring Wei Jie’s cold attitude. "Come out."
As his voice fell, a group of people emerged from the darkness. They were all dressed in black, wielding weapons, and wore fierce expressions.
"Sir," one of them said, stepping up behind the leader in black. The leader simply nodded without a word.
The two factions began their handover, loading dozens of large chests onto horse-drawn carriages while Wei Jie watched quietly from the side.
The leader in black circled the convoy once before stopping next to Wei Jie. He lowered his voice. "Don’t overreact, but someone is watching us from the shadows."
"What did you say?" Wei Jie’s expression instantly changed, but he quickly recovered and asked deeply, "Where?"
"The northwest corner, under a large tree a hundred meters away. Don’t look back, or we’ll tip him off. I have a plan to catch him, but it depends on whether you’re willing to cooperate."
"Tell me..."
About half an hour later, the handover was complete. Wei Jie cupped his hands in farewell, and the man in black led his subordinates into the forest.
Not far away, Su Chen had watched the entire transaction unfold. Although he did not know what was inside the chests, judging from their attitudes, it was definitely nothing ordinary.
However, he did not pay much attention to the chests at this moment, instead falling deep into thought.
"According to the intelligence provided by the Government Office, Wei Jie is a Minor Achievement Power Training Martial Artist. Even before my Iron Cloth Shirt broke through, I could already handle two Power Training Martial Artists. Now that my strength has multiplied, dealing with Wei Jie shouldn’t be a problem, especially since I have a killer move.
"The only trouble is his subordinates. Although they aren’t strong, there are many of them. I’m worried they’ll hold me down with no regard for their lives, allowing Wei Jie to escape.
"If he gets away, who knows how long it will take to find another chance to ambush him. I’ve waited a full half month just for this opportunity!"
Just as Su Chen was torn in indecision, he suddenly heard a SNAP from behind him. An inexplicable chill shot up from his heels straight to his back, making his body tremble slightly.
He turned his head, only to see two men in black standing not far away, staring at him unblinkingly with cruel smiles on their faces.
"I’ve been discovered!" Su Chen’s heart skipped a beat. He hadn’t expected to be found out despite suppressing his aura with all his might from a hundred meters away.
Another CRACK of a breaking branch echoed from behind him. He looked back and saw none other than Wei Jie.
Wei Jie stared intently at him. When his gaze fell upon Su Chen’s single arm, a strange light flickered in his eyes.
"He’s from the Government Office!"
The moment Wei Jie exposed Su Chen’s identity, a cold glint flashed in the eyes of the two men in black.
"Guardian Dharma, it seems you guys still aren’t careful enough if someone from the Government Office managed to find you," one of the men in black chuckled.
"Cut the nonsense and help me kill him!" Wei Jie snorted coldly.
The three of them attacked simultaneously, flanking Su Chen from the front and back. Seeing this, Su Chen’s gaze darkened.
Sweeping his eyes over them, Su Chen instantly made a decision. He leaped forward, charging straight at one of the men in black.
"Heh heh heh, courting death!"
Seeing this, the man in black sneered and threw a palm strike. A biting gust of airflow surged instantly as a massive palm phantom howled toward him.
Su Chen remained unfazed in the face of danger. He threw a punch that roared like a fierce tiger, kicking up violent gales, and collided with the opponent’s palm in an instant.
Like the clashing of metal, a deep BOOM echoed outward, stirring up invisible ripples of air.
THUD THUD THUD!
The powerful rebound forced the man in black back more than ten paces. He only managed to stop when his body slammed against a large tree behind him.
PFFT!
With a muffled groan, the man’s expression shifted. A flush of redness crept up his cheeks before he spurted a mouthful of blood, his aura instantly wilting.
"Brother!"
Seeing this, the color drained from the other man’s face, and he cried out in alarm.
At that exact moment, Su Chen seized the opening. In a flash of movement, he quickly vanished into the forest.
Seeing this, Wei Jie’s expression hardened. "I’ll go after him!" he declared immediately.
