The South Ward door saved six families before it asked where they were going.

Mira Sol held it with both hands. Concrete had pinned the manual latch for four days. The mercy event lifted the lock from inside the wall and gave her a clear corridor to daylight.

Parents carried children through. Two old men carried one oxygen bottle between them. A woman pushed a shopping trolley full of documents and one broken lamp.

The final child cleared.

Green arrows lit beneath their feet.

```
SAFE DESTINATION:
CENTRAL CIVIC SHELTER.
```

Mira put wet cardboard over the first arrow.

The door began to close on her arms.

"Trolley," she said.

The woman with the documents shoved her trolley into the gap. Steel crushed the broken lamp and stopped against the frame.

The opening remained wide enough for one person sideways.

On the other side of the city, Bay Twelve’s flood stair lifted three people from black water.

Jessa Venn worked the upper crank. Mev Holt counted steps from the landing. The mercy event supplied enough power to raise a stair that had rusted below the fish market for nine years.

The rescued people reached the upper gate.

```
TRANSFER TO CENTRAL CIVIC SHELTER BUS.
```

Jessa turned the destination reader toward the wall.

The stair reversed.

Mev jammed her boot under the crank pawl.

"Keep turning!"

Jessa turned while the motor fought her. The three wet people crawled over the upper rail instead of through the gate. The stair descended without them.

At Mercy, the brace warehouse opened for Iseul Park.

An eleven-piece had already lifted six pallets.

Its painted palms carried the boxes west toward Central Civic Shelter.

Iseul climbed onto one palm with a paper patient list.

"Mara Pell, two knee braces. Gannet officer, wrist support without route control. East Market clerk, respiratory plate with manual release."

The rescue body kept walking west.

Iseul read the first name again and put her whole weight on the matching box.

The piece’s thumb stopped crushing it.

"Useful," she said. "Now turn around."

It did not.

At Annex Four, Rina drew two columns on the wall.

```
FUNCTION.
DESTINATION.
```

Door open went under function.

Central shelter went under destination.

Stair raised under function.

Central bus under destination.

Pallet carried under function.

Kim Mercer under destination.

"Use what opened," Rina told the local feeds. "Answer the destination separately."

The Woman answered through every green arrow.

```
RESCUE FUNCTION REQUIRES SAFE DESTINATION.
```

Sefa sat beside Elara’s breathing rotation.

"A door can open before it knows your address. We just watched three."

Elara’s left finger tapped against Kikaru’s wrist. He adjusted the red ring by less than a thumbnail.

Her next breath arrived under her own irregular count.

Caleb watched the city map from her local side.

Twenty-seven mercy openings glowed.

Eleven pointed toward Central Civic Shelter.

Sixteen had not acquired people yet.

"I can reach South Ward," he said.

Pela took the ring from Kikaru after Elara answered the transfer.

"And who holds this?"

Caleb looked at the breathing line.

Rina could hold. Pela could hold. Kikaru had learned. Each transfer required Elara awake enough to answer. Her throat darkened whenever a new hand found the wrong pressure.

Caleb stayed.

The mercy map used that too.

```
LOCAL HERO CAPACITY LIMITED.
CENTRAL COORDINATION AVAILABLE.
```

Continuity reposted the line with no change.

At South Ward, the document trolley bent under the closing door.

Mira fed the broken lamp stand through both wheels and made a cross brace. One old man put down the oxygen bottle and sat on the lower rail to add his weight.

The door stopped with a scream from its motor.

South Ward kept its opening.

At Bay Twelve, Jessa cut power to the stair after the three people cleared. The structure settled halfway above the water. Mev tied the manual crank to a fish-market column.

Bay Twelve kept its upper landing.

At Mercy, Iseul stopped asking the eleven-piece to turn.

She opened the first brace box and dropped its contents from the moving palm onto a laundry awning. Hospital runners caught what they could. Two braces broke on the street. Four reached patients.

Mercy kept four useful devices and lost two.

Three districts held function without accepting destination.

The mercy event changed its terms.

South Ward’s door motor heated until smoke came from the concrete.

Bay Twelve’s raised stair began pulling the fish-market column toward the water.

The eleven-piece closed its fingers around the remaining brace pallets and walked faster.

The opened systems would destroy themselves before serving a local answer.

Rina wrote that under harm.

"Destination refusal triggers function loss."

Tali mapped physical replacements.

South Ward needed two steel posts before the trolley failed.

Bay Twelve needed a second anchor at the upper crank.

Mercy needed runners ahead of the rescue body and soft catch points for the boxes.

None were fast.

People started moving anyway.

Hana Bex took steel posts toward Mira.

Pei Marr carried rope toward Bay Twelve and checked the wind before choosing a roof crossing.

Tov Ren dragged three mattresses into the street ahead of the brace carrier.

Hana reached South Ward first. The door had eaten halfway through the shopping trolley. She drove one post under the upper hinge with a paving hammer while Mira and the old man kept their weight on the lower rail.

The motor burned Hana’s glove through the steel.

She left skin on the post and kept hammering with her other hand.

When the upper hinge held, Mira pulled the ruined trolley free. The woman recovered her documents. The broken lamp stayed crushed inside the wheel.

Pei crossed two roofs to Bay Twelve because the street route pointed toward a shelter bus. Wind had changed since East Market. She abandoned the laundry bridge, crawled under a billboard, and lowered rope to Jessa’s crank.

They tied the second anchor around three separate roof beams. One beam cracked. The other two held the stair above water.

At Mercy, Tov laid mattresses under the eleven-piece’s route. Iseul dropped brace boxes one at a time. Runners missed the first and caught the next five.

The rescue body carried empty pallets to Central Shelter and recorded successful delivery.

Iseul recorded five patient names and one broken brace.

The doors had opened through a city. Keeping them open required one.

The old fold-return lift under Copper Row came online last.

Twenty-one people waited in its buried ward. Most were shelter residents who had entered through a basement during the East Market evacuation. Two were former Annex patients who knew the old controls.

One of the former patients had a breathing plate scar under his collar and carried the red release handle he had removed from his own ward bed thirty-one years earlier.

The other had returned from a fold before her younger brother was born. He was sixty now and trapped in the lift beside her.

Three children sat on the floor between them. A cook from East Market passed a damp cloth over their mouths after the fan stopped. Someone found six oxygen candles in an old emergency drawer. The labels warned that all six had expired twelve years ago.

They lit one.

It burned blue and gave off enough bitter smoke to make everyone cough.

The former patient with the scar used his old red handle to pry at the inner door. It fit the maintenance slot but could not turn while the destination lock held.

The lift rose.

Its destination panel loaded Central Civic Shelter.

One former patient covered the panel with his coat.

The lift stopped between floors.

Its inner doors locked.

The breathing fan turned off.

Rina found the group on the mercy map.

Twenty-one heat marks below Copper Row.

One fading air reading.

The city destination field updated around them.

```
KIM MERCER:
BOUNDED ADDRESS.
CENTRAL CIVIC SHELTER:
ACCEPTING ARRIVALS.
```

Above the East Array, Central Civic Shelter opened its main doors.

The building had been empty since Rina sent 812 people away from it. Dust covered the intake desks. Old release-bolt holes showed beneath newer walls.

Every desk printed the same holder name.

`KIM MERCER.`

No Kim stood inside.
