Chapter 264: The Coupling Man
The river tunnel took control of the train’s brakes.
Lio felt the pedal rise under his boot.
The maintenance engine kept moving.
"Brake is gone," he said.
Cassius answered from the rear car.
"Mine too. The panel wants my palm."
"Keep your hand off it."
"A stirring defense of personal liberty."
"Keep your hand off it, Cassius."
The joking stopped.
Water ran down both tunnel walls. The three cars followed a shallow grade beneath the river, gaining speed toward the old pump station.
Lio had inspected both couplings in the depot.
The front release used a six-turn wheel and a separation bar. The rear used four turns because the evidence car weighed less. Rust had eaten the painted instructions, so he wrote the counts on his paper medical tag.
`FRONT 6.`
`REAR 4.`
Davi had laughed at him.
"Planning to uncouple us under a river?"
"Planning to know how if the train asks."
"Trains do not ask."
"That is why I inspect them."
The wheel needed two sound hands under load. Lio had tested it with his forearms and moved it half a turn before the depot medic pulled him away.
Now the note shook on his zipper while the grade pulled all three cars faster.
Davi’s white support band tightened in the source carriage.
His right hand reached for the flour sack.
He caught the wrist with his left and pulled both arms against his chest.
"Band active. It wants the source."
Lio looked at the blue-thread medical card tied to his coat zipper. No battery. No route. His name moved only because the engine shook.
"Can you cut yours?"
"Knife is in the bag my hand wants."
The foundation witness bent through the door from the rear carriage. It placed one chipped hand over Davi’s wrist and held the band away from the source.
Its other hand kept Cassius from touching the rear brake panel.
The tunnel signal ahead changed to white.
Kim’s filter came over the carriage speaker in strips of receipt noise.
```
WHITE IS NOT SAFE.
SHAPED IMPACT ROUTE.
```
Lio saw Elara on the maintenance ledge.
She stood above the right rail where the tunnel widened around an old cable recess. A long field rifle braced against her shoulder. The black strip at her throat connected to a sighting band around her right eye.
The target line crossed the engine, skipped the source car’s outer shell, and ended inside Davi.
Elara’s order appeared on the tunnel wall.
```
ELIMINATE DAVI SORN.
PRESERVE SOURCE IF POSSIBLE.
TRANSFER CASSIUS VOSS.
WITNESS CASUALTY:
AUTHORIZED.
```
Lio opened the throttle.
Davi shouted over the speaker.
"You said the brake is gone."
"It is."
"Then why are we faster?"
"Because she aimed for where we were."
The engine surged.
Elara’s rifle moved with them.
The target line stayed inside Davi’s chest.
Then it shifted.
One degree forward.
The line left Davi, crossed the source-car wall, and settled on the coupling behind the engine.
Kim’s filter printed the change.
```
SUPPLIED TARGET:
DAVI SORN.
CORRECTED IMPACT:
ENGINE COUPLING.
```
The shaped round would cut the engine away from the other cars.
It would also send the engine’s fuel cell through the source carriage unless the coupling opened first.
Lio hit the remote release.
The pad read his burned fingertips.
```
MEDICAL SUPPORT BAND ABSENT.
MANUAL RELEASE DENIED.
```
He hit it again with his palm.
The split skin left blood on the reader.
The coupling stayed closed.
There was a manual wheel below the rear engine deck. Someone had to climb out, cross the bucking plate, and turn it through six full rotations.
Lio tied the throttle forward with the loose end of his harbor wrap.
The depot medic saw him leave the seat.
"Where are you going?"
"Coupling."
"Your hands cannot turn that wheel."
"They can fail on it."
He opened the rear hatch.
Tunnel water struck his face. Wind pulled the paper medical card from his zipper and left it beating on the blue thread.
Davi understood when the engine camera found him.
"Lio, stay inside."
"That sounded like an order."
"It was a request. A loud one."
"Denied."
Davi dragged his fighting right hand away from the flour sack.
"The source is distributed. Let the case burn."
"Source is distributed," Lio agreed.
"Then come back inside."
"You are also in the car."
"That is a poor reason."
"It is one reason. Keep yours."
Lio climbed onto the rear deck.
At Annex Four, Caleb watched the target line through Rina’s paper filter.
He felt the East Array under his feet. Fourteen receiver bodies waited beneath the city. The support-band network lay open between his voice and Elara’s weapon.
One word would reach her.
"St..."
Rina caught his jaw with both hands.
The first sound had already left him.
One feeder under East Market raised its spine.
Elara’s rifle twitched back toward Davi.
Sefa struck the Annex speaker.
"Lio. Name, harm, direction. Now."
Lio dropped between engine and source car.
His boots found the narrow maintenance bars. The coupling hammered six inches from his ribs.
He put both burned hands on the wheel.
"Lio Brant."
The wheel tore his wraps open on the first turn.
"Harm is an order owns the brake. A round owns this coupling."
Second turn.
His right hand slipped. He hooked his wrist through a spoke and pulled with his shoulder.
"Wanted direction is source carriage out. Davi and witness through."
Third turn.
Rina released Caleb’s jaw.
"Ask Elara. Do not finish the command."
Caleb looked at the corrected target line.
"Elara. Is the coupling your correction?"
Her rifle stayed on Lio’s position.
The sighting band forced her eye open.
Her left heel moved off the ledge.
One tap against concrete.
Yes.
Fourth turn.
The engine entered the pump-station curve.
The maintenance deck threw Lio against the coupling. Something broke under his coat. He held the wheel.
Fifth turn.
The shaped rifle charged.
Kim’s filter counted impact time.
```
THREE SECONDS.
```
The depot medic crawled through the rear hatch and reached for Lio’s coat.
He kicked the hatch shut.
"Do your job."
"This is my job."
"Wrong patient."
Sixth turn.
The manual lock released.
Lio pulled the separation bar.
The coupling opened.
Engine and source car moved apart by one foot.
Elara fired.
The round entered the open space and expanded.
White pressure cut through the engine deck. The fuel cell folded inward. Metal and river water filled the camera.
Lio vanished inside it.
The source carriage lifted from the rails.
The foundation witness drove both arms through its floor and caught the tunnel bed. Its chipped body became a brake. Davi hit the cable wall with the flour sack under him. Cassius turned the rear wheel until his shoulder tore.
The two witness cars stopped thirty yards beyond the burning engine.
Davi stayed on the floor.
"Lio?"
The engine camera returned static.
The depot medic opened the hatch again.
Heat pushed her backward. Burning fuel ran over the right rail and floated on tunnel water. The engine shell had folded around the front maintenance bars.
She took two steps into the gap.
Tali came through the carriage speaker.
"Secondary cell rising. Back."
"He may be under the deck."
"Secondary cell in eight seconds."
The medic stayed for three.
The foundation witness reached through the broken source-car wall and pulled her inside on the fourth.
The second cell ruptured. Fire crossed the place she had been standing and sealed the gap with part of the tunnel lining.
Rina entered the location while the concrete was still falling.
"Lio Brant. River tunnel, pump curve, front coupling. Body recovery blocked by fuel fire and structural fall."
Tali added, "Recovery owed."
No one wrote presumed remains. The cameras had shown enough to name death and too little to name what could be brought home.
The blue-thread medical card lay against the source-car window. The blast had cut it from Lio’s coat and thrown it clear.
Davi picked it up.
Name. Blood type. Medication. Last dose. No emergency contact filled in.
Cassius read the coupling counts on the back.
"He inspected the wheel before we left."
Davi held the card by its wet thread.
"Yes."
"He knew."
"He prepared. That is not the same thing."
Cassius looked at the rear brake wheel under his torn shoulder.
"No."
The public feed updated before Lio’s transmission finished distributing.
Continuity used the frame of Elara firing.
```
VOLUNTARY ASSOCIATE ATTACKS PROTECTED CONVOY.
OFFICER LIO BRANT KILLED.
EMERGENCY CONTAINMENT REQUIRED.
```
The next frame, still uploading, showed the target line leave Davi and settle on the coupling.
