Chapter 373: The Fourth Side

They had been in the counting loft longer than any of them were comfortable with but the streets below still unsettled enough to make another move risky. From the narrow windows, Lucian could count extra watch patrols on the terrace road and more than a few private runners weaving through lanes that should have been empty by this time of night. The fight on the bridge had made their point. The people were looking for him with purpose.

Sera sat upon an overturned crate her arms wrapped around her knees. "if we sit here too long, someone sells this place out from beneath us."

"if we go before then, we walk into a net that we cannot see," Istra murmured, quieter since her confession but no less careful with her words.

Lucian fastened the cloth around his arm. "then we wait until the first shift change and move with the workers. Blending is finished but crowds still help."

It was then the knock fell.

Not firm, not official but three short taps against the lower stairs door then a pause. Sera was on her feet instantly. "please tell me that is not another offer."

Istra moved to the side of the door rather than in front of it. "too polite for Ash Vale. too patient for Authority."

Lucian stepped close enough to the wood to speak through it. "talk."

a woman’s voice answered, calm and quiet. "if I wanted the door broken, it would already be open. I am alone. I am not here for custody, recovery, or sale. I am here because the three noisy sides are all wrong about what you are, and I would rather test that before they burn the city down around the argument."

Sera shot a look to Lucian. "I hate how reasonable the dangerous ones sound."

Lucian opened the door.

The woman on the stairs was older than Istra by perhaps ten years, her hair dark with grey weaving through it and a simple coat that had seen more travel than dress. She bore no visible weapons and kept her hands both in sight. Her eyes swept over Lucian first then to Sera and finally landed on Istra with a flicker of recognition that was not kind.

"you may call me Captain Rhel," she said. "not city rank. not Authority rank. I speak for a circle that served under Cael before his absence and refused to join the later remnant politics."

Istra’s mouth tightened. "The Quiet Line."

"you remember," Rhel said. "good. That saves time."

Lucian did not step aside yet. "what do you want?"

"to find out whether you are carrying Cael’s will or only the leftovers of his power," Rhel said. "those are not the same thing. One can be reasoned with. the other becomes a disaster with a pulse."

Sera gave a short disbelieving sound. "so you came to inspect him."

"yes," Rhel said, without shame. "in a loft, quietly, before Ash Vale tries another public grab or Authority decides the whole ward is acceptable loss."

Lucian looked her over. "and if you decide I am only power without will?"

"then my circle will try to end the problem before the Lords use it as an excuse to finish the old vote," Rhel said. "if you are more than that, we may help you stay free long enough to matter."

Istra edged closer to Lucian. "her people do not play at protection. If they mark you as wrong, they will not argue terms."

Rhel glanced at her. "and your people sent a debtor to walk him through the lower planes until a cleaner hand could take over. Do not pretend your method was gentler. It was only slower."

Sera looked between them. "I am starting to miss the days when the worst person in my life was a dishonest market broker."

Lucian pulled back from the door. "come in. You get a short hearing and no one follows you up."

Rhel entered and closed the door herself. she did not sit. she stood opposite Lucian as if the room, the city, and the other two people in it were secondary.

"you broke Authority seals, refused remnant custody, refused Ash vale, and forced a bridge fight in full view of Varn Thal," she said. "that already proves strength. It does not prove you are anything but a breach wearing a man’s shape. the quiet Line does not care who claims you. We care what answers when infinity is pressed."

"and how do you plan to press it?" Lucian asked.

"with a test," Rhel said. "not in this loft. There is a sealed ground outside the east ward, old enough to predate the current city seats. you come willingly. you bring whoever you trust. we measure what stands behind your power. after that, we either clear a road for you or we become another enemy with better reasons than the rest."

Istra shook her head once. "that sealed ground is a kill box if her people decide the result is unclean."

"it is a kill box for liars and accidents," Rhel said. "if he is truly linked to Cael in more than appetite, he will walk out of it."

Sera moved closer to Lucian’s side. "I do not like her."you do not have to like her," Lucian said. He kept his eyes on Rhel. "if I refuse?"

"then you stay in a city that has already seen what you can do and is filling with people who think that makes you property," Rhel said. "my offer is not kind. it is simply the only one so far that does not begin by putting a name tag on you."

The loft fell quiet save the distant street noise beneath the floorboards.

Lucian thought of Cael’s warning about people who smiled with collars behind their backs. He thought of Istra’s debt, Sera’s choice, the bridge, and the way every faction so far had spoken about him as an object first and a person second. Rhel was still judging him but she was judging the thing that mattered instead of the prize value around it.

"I will take the test," Lucian said.

Sera turned to him. "of course you will."

"I need answers that do not come from people trying to own the result," Lucian said. "if her circle once served Cael directly, they may know parts the archive did not give us."

Rhel inclined her head a fraction. "before first light. East ward edge, where the old aqueduct drops into the dry channel. come unmarked if you can. if you are followed, the ground closes and the chance ends."

she turned to the door, then paused. "and Captain Istra. If you enter with him, you enter as yourself, not as a delivery agent mid-task. the quiet Line has no patience left for half loyalties."

Istra’s answer was stiff. "I will enter as a woman who already told him the debt. that is all I can offer."

"it may be enough," Rhel said. "or it may not."

She left as cleanly as she had arrived.

Sera waited until the stair went quiet. "I do not trust her."

"neither do I," Lucian said. "but she is the first one who asked what I am instead of what I can be sold as."

Istra checked the window again. "then we rest in turns and leave before the city settles into a deeper search pattern. If the Quiet Line is moving, the others will feel the shift soon enough."

Lucian sat back against the wall and let the new name settle in his mind.

Captain Rhel. the Quiet Line. A test outside the east ward.

For the first time since entering the Primordial Expanse, the next step was not just escape or refusal.

It was a question aimed straight at the center of him.
