Chapter 372: Blood on the Bridge
They figured they’d managed enough of a lead to reach the next level before anyone reorganized.
They were wrong.
The service lane climbed up toward a wide public bridge that linked the lower trade wards to the mid-terraces and for a stretch it looked like the fastest escape. People still crossed in both directions. Carts rattled over the stone. It was enough of a distance away that even Sera began to slow her breathing
Then the far end of the bridge closed off.
Ash Vale enforcers came up in a clean line from both sides of the span, outnumbered and better armed than before as they took up their positions. At the same time a local Authority detachment filed in from the rear approach, sharp gray coats standing out amongst the crowd as they called for the bridge to be halted in the name of public order. The ordinary traffic broke up at once. Some people fled. Some simply froze in place. A few were brushed aside as the two forces fought over the same ground for different reasons.
Sera shot a glance from end to end of the bridge. "You have to be joking."
"No. They adapted quickly."
An Authority officer raised his voice over the din. "Lucian of no house, stand down for emergency containment. The girl comes under protective hold. All private actors will withdraw."
One of the Ash Vale men laughed loudly enough that the comment carried. "You can file your paperwork after we take what we came for."
Lucian put Sera behind him and kept walking toward the center of the bridge, determined not to allow either faction to complete the box around them. "Stay close."
"I am," Sera said. "I am also open to any plan that does not involve dying in the middle of a public crossing."
The first wave of Ash Vale enforcers came in quickly and this time didn’t bother with speeches. Lucian met them head on, breaking the first man’s guard and forcing the second into the path of the third. He pressed the narrow width of the bridge against them so that they couldn’t spread out and surround him cleanly. Istra kept the other flank covered, shattering the leg of a runner who’d come up along the rail side in an attempt to reach Sera.
Authority didn’t wait for Ash Vale to finish their first failure. Binding rods flashed from the rear and two officers tried to pin Lucian’s movement while a third called for the girl to be taken under civic protection. Lucian tore the first field apart with a short burst of strength, sending the impact crashing back through the bridge stone hard enough to throw the nearest gray coats off their feet.
The fight turned loud and messy in front of both wards.
People on the upper terraces stopped to watch. Workers on the lower lifts turned to see what was happening. A signal horn somewhere in the city began to sound, too late to change anything that was already happening on the span. Ash Vale wanted Lucian for leverage. Authority wanted the scene sealed before it became proof that they had lost control. Neither side was prepared for how little patience Lucian had left.
An Ash Vale captain managed to get close enough to cut Lucian across the arm. Lucian returned the favor by slamming the man into the bridge rail, hard enough that the wood cracked and he stopped getting back up. A pair of Authority officers tried to use the opening to throw a containment lattice over the center of the span. Istra shattered one side of it. Lucian tore through the rest and kept moving forward with Sera under his arm as the lattice light died around them.
"Left!" Sera shouted.
Lucian turned in time to catch another Ash Vale fighter coming off the rail and throw him into two of his own people. The line broke. For a moment there was space.
Istra pointed toward the far end of the bridge, where the Authority formation had thinned out after the lattice failed. "Through there. Now."
They went hard and straight. Lucian cleared the last of the open resistance with force that no longer looked like anything a dock laborer could claim. By the time they reached the mid-terrace side, both groups were busy dragging their wounded and arguing over the failure to keep a clean pursuit.
The three of them didn’t slow until the bridge was well behind them and the sound of the horn was swallowed by the deeper city.
Sera leaned against a wall, breathing hard, blood on her lip again from a hit she hadn’t bothered to mention during the fight. "That was not a rescue. That was a declaration."
Lucian pressed a hand to the wound on his arm and kept walking. "They put it in public. I answered in public."
Istra looked back toward the span, where city watchers and half the upper ward had seen everything. "Your name is finished as a rumor. By nightfall every serious group in Varn Thal will treat you as an active breach."
Sera wiped her mouth. "Good. Maybe they will stop grabbing me like I am the handle on his cage."
"They may stop grabbing and start killing the ground around him instead," Istra said.
Lucian didn’t argue with that. The bridge fight had bought them room to move, but it had also burned whatever thin cover still clung to him in the city. Authority had failed to contain him in front of witnesses. Ash Vale had failed to take him in front of the same witnesses. Both would come back harder for the shame alone.
"We do not stay in this ward," Lucian said.
"No," Istra agreed. "We find deeper shelter long enough to stop the bleeding and then we decide whether Varn Thal still has anything left worth the risk."
Sera pushed off the wall and fell in beside them, still angry, still shaken, and no longer able to pretend any part of this would remain quiet.
Behind them, blood marked the bridge stones in full view of the city.
Ahead of them, Varn Thal began to react to the fact that the seal-breaker was no longer someone people whispered about.
He was someone people had seen win.
