Chapter 109: On the Immortal Flavor Old Fish
Chapter 109: Chapter 109: On the Immortal Flavor Old Fish
"Lily, you sure know how to dote on your man."
"Hehe, of course. But how is that big oaf so compliant? We told him to carry our things, and he actually did."
At the back of the group, Wei Junchao and his girlfriend, You Xiaoli, were whispering to each other, holding hands and chuckling softly.
Up ahead, Ye Xing’s ears twitched, and his brow furrowed. Wei Junchao and You Xiaoli were speaking very quietly; an ordinary person would never have heard them. But Ye Xing was a Martial Artist at the peak of the Martial Arts Second Realm. His hearing, vision, and even his Perception Power far surpassed those of a normal person. He heard every single word of their conversation, and it left a sour taste in his mouth. Lin Guishan was helping them carry their things, but not only did they lack any gratitude, they were mocking him, calling him a "big oaf." ’That’s going a little too far,’ Ye Xing thought. Still, it was a class reunion. They hadn’t seen each other in nearly half a year, and it was a rare get-together. He didn’t want to make things unpleasant. Better to just let it go for now. Besides, the two large bags were nothing. They might have been heavy for an ordinary person, but to Ye Xing, they weighed no more than a couple of chicken feathers. It was no trouble at all.
The private room the classmates had booked was Room 206, on the second floor of the Longwan Grand Restaurant.
The Longwan Grand Restaurant was decorated in a grand and elegant style. The floors were paved with marble, and the color palette was harmonious and natural. The main hall was filled with round tables laden with delicious dishes, around which many customers sat, eating with great relish. The air was thick with the aroma of various delicacies as waiters bustled about, continuously delivering platters of food to the tables.
The hall was incredibly lively. At every table, people ate and chatted. Some were bragging, while others were lost in conversation.
After arriving at the second-floor hall, the dozen or so classmates walked down a corridor and finally reached Room 206, where they all took their seats.
The private room was quite spacious. It featured a large round table with a glass Lazy Susan in the center for the dishes. Once the food arrived, you could simply rotate it to bring whatever dish you wanted in front of you. Surrounding the table were over a dozen chairs, and a widescreen LCD TV mounted on the wall was playing a show for their entertainment.
A moment after everyone was seated, a waiter entered with a menu.
Wei Junchao immediately took the menu from the waiter’s hand, as if it were his right. He announced to the group, "Come take a look, everyone. See what you want to order."
"It’s fine, you can order first," a classmate said.
"Well then, I won’t be shy. This one looks good, and so does this one... Huh? Am I seeing things? The Longwan Grand Restaurant actually has Immortal Flavor Old Fish?" Wei Junchao’s eyes suddenly lit up.
"Yes, sir. The Immortal Flavor Old Fish is our hottest new specialty. Our Longwan Grand Restaurant has some connections over in Luoxian County, which is how we managed to procure some for sale. In all of Fu City, only three to five restaurants have managed to get the rights to sell it," the waiter explained with a smile.
"Impressive! I’ll have one Immortal Flavor Old Fish, then! You still have it in stock, right?" Wei Junchao said eagerly, his mouth already watering.
"Junchao, what’s an Immortal Flavor Old Fish? Judging by your reaction, it must be amazing!" a classmate asked at once.
The Immortal Flavor Old Fish was a massively popular dish in Luoxian County, and its fame was growing rapidly. But it had only been around for a month or two, so it wasn’t a household name just yet. Furthermore, it was quite expensive, so its clientele mostly consisted of well-to-do people with money to spare.
"I’ve heard of the Immortal Flavor Old Fish. A friend of mine was talking about it the other day and couldn’t stop praising it. Apparently, it’s incredible!"
"Yeah, I’ve heard of it too. It’s supposed to have a great reputation. I’ve always wanted to try it and see what all the fuss is about."
An extremely curious classmate leaned over to look at the menu. His eyes swept over it, and when he saw the price, he was dumbfounded. "A thousand yuan? You’ve got to be kidding me! Why is it so expensive? A single fish for a thousand yuan!"
"That’s so expensive! Maybe we shouldn’t get this one!"
"It really is expensive. I don’t care how good a fish is, it can’t be worth that much. Let’s get something else!"
Several classmates chimed in with similar suggestions.
"What do you people know!" Wei Junchao scoffed. "The Immortal Flavor Old Fish is a specialty from Luoxian County. The taste is simply divine. After you eat it, your whole body feels warm and incredibly comfortable. This dish is a massive hit; it’s always in high demand but short supply. You’ll definitely regret it if you don’t try it."
"I’d love to try it, but it’s just too expensive. I can’t afford it."
"Yeah, that one fish costs almost half a month’s pay for me."
"Of course good things are expensive. But I figure, if the dozen or so of us chip in, a thousand yuan averages out to only a few dozen yuan each."
"That makes sense, but isn’t it a little pathetic for over a dozen people to share one fish? How many bites would each person even get? One? You can’t get full off that. What a luxury!"
"So what if it’s only one bite? We’re just trying it to see if it’s really as good as Wei Junchao claims!"
"Hey, wait a minute. The Immortal Flavor Old Fish is a specialty from Luoxian County, and isn’t Ye Xing from Luoxian County?"
"That’s right! Xingzai, hurry up and tell us, is the Immortal Flavor Old Fish really that good?"
The classmates started whispering amongst themselves, and all eyes inevitably turned to Ye Xing.
Just as Ye Xing was about to speak, a soft chuckle suddenly came from across the table.
"Pfft!"
Wei Junchao looked smug and said, "I’m not trying to be rude, but there’s no point in asking Ye Xing about this. He probably has no idea. Sure, he’s from Luoxian County, but think about it—one Immortal Flavor Old Fish costs a thousand yuan. As far as I know, Ye Xing has a job in Luoxian County that probably pays him, what, two or three thousand a month? How could he possibly afford to eat something like that?"
"Erk!"
Listening to Wei Junchao pontificate, Ye Xing was stunned into silence. A strange expression crept onto his face. For a moment, he didn’t know what to say. He felt the urge to both laugh and cry; it was a complicated feeling.
Seeing Ye Xing’s stunned expression, Wei Junchao became even more certain that he had never tried the Immortal Flavor Old Fish. Growing increasingly smug, he said, "The Immortal Flavor Old Fish is truly delicious; its fame is already starting to spread across the whole country. Honestly, Ye Xing, for someone from Luoxian County to have never eaten it... that’s just not right. It’s almost shameful. People will laugh at you. I know it’s usually something only people with money can afford, and dropping a thousand yuan at once probably stings a bit for you. But I still suggest you try it at least once. If you scrimp and save, putting away three to five hundred a month, you’ll be able to afford one in two or three months."
