The most important point was that the instant he clearly heard the whispers, his soul seemed to be rapidly "falling." Perhaps "falling" was not quite the right word. Instead, he was being "guided," just like how devout believers in foreign myths would return to their god’s embrace after death.

He suspected that if he had failed to resist, he might really have ended up in some kind of divine realm belonging to the Supreme Sovereign of the Profound Darkness.
