Chapter 50: Chapter 50| Third One Today
Zane looked at her.
The hoodie was gone today, he’d been used to her on it. She was on training gear instead which was fitted and functional, but even that managed to do some obstruction work. The fabric was cut in a way that suggested either deliberate design or very specific tailoring, because somehow even without the oversized hoodie collection Sera had maintained a level of strategic ambiguity about her figure that Zane was starting to suspect was entirely intentional.
He looked at his coffee.
’Six weeks of hoodies,’ he thought. ’And even without them she’s still running interference.’
He looked at his coffee.
"You deserve it," he said.
She looked up.
He meant it plainly. She’d placed third. She’d trained hard. She’d sat across from him every day at 12:30 PM and pushed fries across the table and asked real questions without an agenda and defended him without being asked when Ryan’s rumour was running through the building.
She deserved the suite and the stipend and the private bathroom and everything else third place came with.
She held his gaze for a moment.
"Thank you," she said quietly. The smirk entirely absent for once.
The system surfaced.
『 Sera Dunne — Familiarity +2% 』
Zane picked up his coffee.
’You’ve been quiet today,’ he thought at the system.
『 Just allowing you to have your moments. 』
’How considerate,’ he thought.
『 I have my days. 』
The cafeteria ran its usual noise around them. Someone’s tray clattered three tables over. Neither of them acknowledged it.
They sat in the comfortable silence that had become theirs over six weeks of shared lunches and stolen fries and conversations that went somewhere real without either of them planning for it.
Nobody said anything else for a while.
They didn’t need to, just enjoying the ecstasy of each other’s company.
Zane left the cafeteria at exactly 5:30 PM.
Sera had left earlier than him. Something about business to take care of, she’d said, already halfway out of her chair before she finished the sentence. The specific exit energy of someone whose schedule hadn’t stopped running just because the cafeteria had been comfortable.
Zane sat with his coffee for another few minutes after she left.
Then the system beeped.
『 SERA DUNNE — Familiarity: 25% 』
『 System Observation: At current trajectory acquaintance threshold will be reached within approximately 8-12 meaningful interactions. At which point Heat Sense output becomes available for acquisition. 』
『 System Note: She also has a very agreeable figure for someone who spent six weeks hiding it under fabric. Just noting. 』
Zane stared at the last line.
’Finally showing your true colors are we,’ he thought.
『 The system observes everything. It simply exercises discretion about when to share observations. 』
’That was not discretion,’ Zane thought.
『 That was a calculated disclosure. There is a difference. 』
He finished his coffee and stood up.
Then packed up and headed out.
The campus at this hour had the specific energy of a building winding down. Students heading back to dorms, the practical complex locked for the evening, the corridors quieter than their daytime frequency but not yet at the full quiet of night.
He was cutting across the east courtyard toward the main building with his bag over one shoulder and his notebook under his arm when he heard his name.
"Calloway."
He stopped.
Turned.
Nyx Hale was coming from the direction of the academic block. Not passing through. Not coincidentally heading the same direction. Moving with the deliberate directional energy of someone who had come looking for him specifically and had found him exactly where she expected to.
Zane stood in the courtyard and watched her close the distance.
’Woah,’ he thought. ’What is it with these girls intercepting me today.’
She stopped two meters away. Arms at her sides for once. Not crossed, not guarded. Just standing with the specific composure of someone who had made a decision and was comfortable with it.
The evening light caught her dark hair and pale skin the way it always did in this courtyard. The uniform sitting on her the way it had no business sitting on anyone in an academic institution. The top buttons doing what could only be described as their absolute best under considerable pressure, the figure underneath demanding more structural consideration than standard academy issue fabric had been designed to provide. Her boobs demanding freedom from its cage.
He kept his expression neutral.
Managed it.
Mostly.
Then the system beeped.
『 System Observation: Now I understand why she is your type. 』
’Shut up,’ Zane thought.
『 I am simply noting observable data. 』
’I said shut up,’ Zane thought.
『 Noted. Shutting up. 』
A pause.
『 She really is though. 』
’I will find a way to uninstall you,’ Zane thought.
『 You cannot. But the sentiment is appreciated. 』
"Nyx," he said.
"I’ve been patient," she said. No preamble. No greeting. Just the statement landing cleanly in the courtyard air between them like she’d been carrying it for a while and had decided today was the day she put it down. "I gave you space after the corridor interaction. After the trial announcement. After your match." She looked at him directly. "I’m done being patient."
Zane held her gaze.
"Okay," he said.
"Eleven documented stutter instances," she said. "All traced to your proximity. Every internal diagnostic returned clean. Every external variable I could identify ruled out. Every equipment check negative." She paused for exactly one beat. "And then you walk onto an arena floor and put a B-rank student on the ground with a contact strike that produced visible shockwave output." Another pause. "Twice. In the same match."
The courtyard was quiet around them. A few students moving in the distance. Nobody close enough to matter.
"That sounds like a significant coincidence," Zane said.
Nyx looked at him with the specific flatness of someone who had prepared for exactly that response.
"I don’t believe in coincidences," she said. "Not in proximity events. Not in Sigil activation stutters. And not in contact output from a student whose file has been blank since day one." She tilted her head slightly. "So I’m going to ask you one question. Directly. And I’d like a real answer this time."
Zane waited.
