Chapter 49: Chapter 49| Sera’s confrontation
The afternoon session ended at exactly 4:30 PM.
Zane was packing his notebook when he heard her before he saw her.
"Look who it is."
He turned.
Sera was leaning against the corridor wall outside the classroom door. Out of her usual hoodie situation. Still in the fitted training gear from the joint session, hair still up, the kind of easy confidence that came from someone who had just placed third in a forty two person bracket and was comfortable with what that meant.
Zane looked at her.
"Look who’s the number three hero," he said.
She couldn’t hold it. The smile broke through before she could do anything about it. Wide, genuine, the kind that reached everything simultaneously without any part of it being performance.
"Sorry I couldn’t be there to watch your last fight," she said, falling into step beside him as he moved toward the corridor. "I caught the first two though — Round One and Round Two. I watched them from the rail between my own matches." She shook her head slightly. "Round Three against Ryan I missed. It was a different arena, different timing. Only saw the footage after."
"It’s fine," Zane said.
"It’s not fine," she said. "You surprised a hell of a lot of people and I only caught part of it live." She glanced at him. "I was genuinely worried about how you’d perform. Not because I doubted you.. Just because I knew what you were walking into without a registered Sigil and I knew how the room would read it before you’d thrown a single punch."
"And now?." Zane asked.
She looked at him sideways with the slow building expression he recognised from too many shared lunches to count.
"Now I’m genuinely interested in you," she said.
She let that sit for exactly one second.
Then the smirk appeared. Slow. Deliberate. The full version.
Zane looked at her.
"Uhm....In how you fight," she added. "Professionally speaking."
"Right," Zane said.
"Mostly," she said.
He kept walking.
They moved through the corridor together in the comfortable rhythm that had developed between them without announcement. Same pace, same general direction, neither of them needing to confirm where they were going because the cafeteria had been the default for long enough to stop requiring a decision.
"You said something once," Sera said. "In the cafeteria. About preparing for what you can control and not wasting energy on what you can’t." She glanced at him. "That’s what everyone saw on that floor. Not a fluke. Not a miracle. Just someone who had prepared for everything they could and executed it cleanly when it counted."
"Maybe," Zane said.
"Not maybe," she said. Firm without being forceful. "That’s exactly what it was."
He looked forward.
"I have a goal," he said. "Becoming the best hero I can be. Whatever that looks like from where I’m currently standing." A pause. "That’s what was driving it. Not the trials specifically. Just the direction."
Sera looked at him with the settled expression. The one that wasn’t pity or admiration but something more considered. The one that meant her file on him had just been updated and the new information fit cleanly with everything already there.
"Oh," she said. "So you have a big dream."
"Something like that," Zane said.
"Rooting for you," she said simply. No buildup. No performance. Just stated like it was already decided and she was confirming something that had been true for a while.
By the time they reached the cafeteria Zane checked his communicator.
It was 5:00 PM.
Slightly early for the dinner crowd. The cafeteria was running at minute capacity. A few students scattered across tables, the food line quieter than its usual rush hours.
Sera had clearly anticipated this. Their usual table already had two cups of coffee sitting on it. Zane’s coffee was cold the way he always took it, hers whatever rotating hot drink she’d been cycling through since week one.
He looked at the cups.
"I ordered ahead," she said, sliding into her seat across from him.
He sat down and picked up his coffee.
"You were that confident I’d show up," he said.
"Let’s say it was a gamble," she said simply.
He drank.
She sat across from him and wrapped both hands around her own cup and looked at him over the rim with the expression that meant she had something to say and was deciding how to say it.
"Everyone expected to see you groveling," she said. "A sigilless student. With a Charity admission. Son of a fallen hero. The whole narrative had one ending and everyone in this building had already read it." She set the cup down. "Nobody expected what actually happened."
"Miracles," Zane said flatly.
She laughed. Short and genuine. "Hehe. Sure. Call it that." She shook her head. "I call it someone who knew exactly what they were doing and let everyone underestimate them until it was too late to adjust. That’s not a miracle. That’s strategy."
Zane looked at the table.
’That’s closer to accurate,’ he thought.
He pushed the fry plate to her side of the table.
Without being asked. Without a running battle about territory. Just pushed it across.
Sera looked at the plate.
Then at him.
Something in her expression shifted not dramatically. Just the specific quiet adjustment of someone whose file on a person had just been updated with information that confirmed something they’d suspected for a while and hadn’t been sure was real until now.
She took a fry.
Didn’t make a thing of it.
"My roommate told me some of you guys have serious benefits now," Zane said. "Private rooms and all that."
"Third floor suites," Sera said. "Yes." She settled back in her chair. "Private bathroom. Climate controlled. No surprise heating vent noises at 3:00 AM." She tilted her head. "Genuinely luxurious by academy standards."
"Sounds good," Zane said.
"It is good," she said. A pause. "I do miss my roommate though. Sometimes I go crash at her room just to have someone nearby." She looked at her cup. "Luxury is nice. But somehow company is better."
