Chapter 33| Trial Day
Chapter 33: Chapter 33| Trial Day
Zane was up by 7:00 AM.
No alarm. Just the specific wakefulness that came when the day ahead had enough weight to pull you out of sleep before anything else could. He lay on his back for thirty seconds staring at the ceiling then got up and started moving.
Dex was still asleep. Face down. Boots still on from last night somehow. Gerald wheezed once like he was giving a send-off.
Zane pulled on his training gear. The standard kit he’d been moving in since week one and headed down to the cafeteria.
Sera was already there when he arrived.
Not in a hoodie.
He stopped for exactly half a second in the cafeteria entrance.
She was in her training gear — fitted, functional, the kind of outfit that made the oversized hoodie collection feel like a long running practical joke with a very delayed punchline. She had her hair pulled back properly and was sitting at their usual table with both hands wrapped around her cup looking like someone who had been awake for a while and had made peace with it.
She looked up when he sat down.
"You seem enthusiastic," Zane said.
"Of course." Sera’s eyes had a specific brightness to them. Not nervous energy, more like the controlled excitement of someone who had been waiting for something and was finally here. "Who wouldn’t be." She looked at him across the table. "Hope someone’s ready to get their ass kicked."
Zane held her gaze.
"...Hope I’ll be the one doing the ass kicking," he said.
She looked at him for a second.
Then laughed. Short, genuine, the kind that didn’t announce itself.
He almost laughed too.
Almost.
They finished eating in the comfortable silence that had become theirs. No fry theft today, no running commentary, just two people sitting with what was coming and not needing to dress it up as anything else.
Sera checked her communicator first.
"It’s already time," she said. "Let’s not be late."
They pushed back from the table together and headed out.
The corridor outside the practical complex was louder than Zane had expected.
Not just first years. The hallway was lined with students from across the academy —second years, third years, a few faces he didn’t recognise at all. Some had positioned themselves along the walls with the casual energy of people who had seen rank trials before and come back to watch anyway. Groups clustered near the arena entrance doors, talking at a volume that carried over everything else.
A commentator’s voice was already running from somewhere inside. Not a broadcast, just someone with a microphone and an elevated position at the far end doing live bracket updates as the displays refreshed.
"—The first year bracket is now fully loaded. Forty two students. Twenty one matchups. Arena assignments posted by registration number on the main display. Students are reminded that bracket names are now visible in full—"
Zane and Sera joined the flow of first years moving toward the main display.
He clocked the room as he moved through it. Kael was near the side wall with Torre and Fen, watching the first years with the relaxed observation of second years who remembered what this felt like. Kael caught Zane’s eye across the corridor and gave him the single nod. Nothing more.
Zane nodded back.
Dex appeared from somewhere to his left, still looking slightly like someone who had put his boots back on in a hurry. He fell into step beside Zane for three seconds.
Dex fell into step beside Zane for three seconds.
"Make me proud," Dex said.
Zane looked at him.
Dex peeled off toward the rail entrance without further elaboration.
The main display was a wide panel mounted above the arena entrance doors. Bracket grid. Registration numbers on the left. Names loading in on the right as the system pulled them through.
Students were finding their numbers. Some reacted visibly. Relief, tension, the quiet recalibration of seeing a name they hadn’t expected. A girl two spots to Zane’s left made a sound that wasn’t quite a laugh. A guy near the front went very still for about four seconds then relaxed like he’d passed a test.
Zane found his number.
007.
He looked right.
031.
The name loaded.
He stared at it for three full seconds.
’So that’s who N is,’ he thought.
The system surfaced immediately.
『 031 identified. No prior acquisition prompt triggered across full academy residency. Sigil was either never activated within aura range or deliberate conservation was maintained. Proceeding without output data. Adapt in real time. 』
’Adapt in real time,’ Zane thought. ’Right.’
He pulled his eyes off the display and scanned the corridor.
Sera had found her own bracket. She was looking at her display with a focused expression. Processing her opponent, building whatever picture she built before a fight. She glanced over when she felt him looking.
"Good?" she said.
"Good," Zane said.
She nodded once and went back to her display.
Maren was standing further down the corridor with her arms crossed looking at her bracket number with the specific stillness that meant she was already three steps into a plan. She didn’t look up.
Nyx was near the far end. Upright. Composed. Reading the display the way she read everything. Like a document she intended to cite later. She hadn’t looked at Zane once since arriving. Which meant she was either focused entirely on her own bracket or had already done whatever looking she needed to do before he noticed.
Ryan Castellan was in the center of his usual circle. He’d already found his number and wasn’t looking at the display anymore. He was looking at the room. At the other students. In the corridor.
His eyes landed on Zane for exactly two seconds.
Then moved on.
The commentator’s voice picked up again.
"—first matches begin in Arena One at 1:30 PM. Students with bracket positions one through ten please make your way to the arena entrance. All other students are welcome on the observation rails—"
Zane looked at his number one more time.
007.
Arena Two by 2:15 PM.
’One hour and forty five minutes,’ he thought.
He put his communicator in his pocket and looked at the corridor full of people who had no idea what was sitting in his hands.
