Chapter 32: Chapter 32| The Wall Before Dawn

The training grounds at 4:15 PM were emptier than their usual morning slot.

Most students were either resting ahead of tomorrow or had found somewhere else to be on their unexpected free day. The practical complex was open but quiet. Just the ambient hum of the lighting rigs and the distant sound of someone running drills in Arena Three.

Dex walked straight to the reinforced wall without preamble.

Zane followed and stopped a few meters back.

Dex rolled his neck once. Shook out his hands. The casual pre-activation routine of someone who’d been doing this long enough that the warm up had become automatic.

"Watch the contact point," Dex said. "Most people think my Sigil is about the force behind the punch. It’s not."

He pressed his palm flat against the reinforced wall.

The sound that followed was not a cracking sound.

It was a sharp concentrated impact that rolled through the wall’s composite material in a visible wave. A ripple moving outward from the contact point before the wall absorbed it. The section where his palm had landed compressed slightly then reset. No crack. No structural damage. Just the unmistakable evidence of something significant having passed through it.

Zane stared at the contact point.

’That’s what it looks like from the outside,’ he thought.

He’d been running this Sigil for three weeks. Fifty reps a day. Activation after activation under desks and against bathroom walls and on the surface of training dummies in empty arenas at night.

He’d never seen it from out here.

’The wave,’ he thought. ’The ripple through the material. I can feel that from inside the activation but I didn’t know it was visible.’

"The contact point is everything," Dex said, stepping back from the wall. "Pressure plus intent. Most people try to punch through. You don’t punch through. You press in and let the output do the work."

’Pressure plus intent,’ Zane thought. ’First thing I figured out on my own.’

"What’s the activation window like," Zane said. Keeping his voice casual.

Dex looked at him. "Why?"

"Curious," Zane said. "Trying to understand how different Sigils work mechanically. For the trials."

Dex accepted that. "Fast. Sub-second when I’m warmed up. The output scales with how much physical force I put behind the contact. More pressure creates a bigger wave." He pressed his palm against the wall again, lighter this time. The ripple was smaller. Contained. "Control matters more than force at close range."

’Control matters more than force,’ Zane thought. ’I’ve been running it at controlled output for three weeks. That’s why the activation speed dropped so fast. I never tried to force it.’

He filed that away.

Dex ran three more demonstrations. Different surfaces. Different pressure levels. Showing the output variance without explaining the mechanics. Just letting the results speak.

Zane watched every rep.

Then Dex said, "Your turn."

Zane looked at him.

"Show me your footwork," Dex said. "Not the Sigil stuff. Just movement. I want to see what you’ve been building."

’Just movement,’ Zane thought. ’Base only. No Sigil.’

He moved.

No Overdrive. No Impact Breaker. Just the footwork patterns he’d drilled every morning since week one. The angular approach, the arc redirect, the unpredictable variance he’d built into the sequence so no one could read the next step from the previous one.

Dex watched.

Didn’t say anything for three full sequences.

Then... "That’s not standard academy footwork."

"No," Zane said.

"Where’d you learn it."

"I Built it," Zane said. "Piece by piece."

Dex looked at him for a long moment. The easy energy still there. But something underneath it paying closer attention than usual.

"For tomorrow," Dex said.

"For whenever," Zane said.

Dex nodded slowly.

’He’s not going to push it,’ Zane thought. ’Same as Kael. Different method. Kael closed the file deliberately, Dex just decides some things don’t need opening.’

Then the system surfaced.

『 FAMILIARITY — DEX: 36% — ACQUAINTANCE THRESHOLD CROSSED 』

『 Impact Breaker output ceiling update: 45% → 65% 』

『 Combined output with Overdrive now produces mid B-rank equivalent force within the activation window. 』

Zane went still internally.

’’65%,’ he thought.

’Impact Breaker at 65%. The extra 5% came from the milestone quest I completed. The sub one second activation reward. The acquaintance tier jump took it from 40% to 60% base. Add the quest bonus and it sits at 65%.’

’Overdrive at 60%.’

’Progress from one afternoon watching Dex demonstrate his own Sigil back at him without knowing it.’

’The irony of that is significant,’ he thought.

『 Noted. Do you want a moment. 』

’No,’ Zane thought. ’I want to test it. But not here.’

Dex was already picking up his bag.

"Good session," Dex said. He glanced at the wall once more then looked at Zane. "Good fundamentals."

He walked back toward the main building without looking back.

Zane waited until he was through the doors.

Then walked to the reinforced wall.

Pressed his palm flat.

Pressure. Intent. Impact Breaker at 65% output for the first time.

The ripple through the wall was visibly larger than anything he’d produced before. The composite material compressed further at the contact point. The wave traveled further before the wall absorbed it.

He stepped back and looked at it.

Then at his hand.

’65%,’ he thought. ’That’s what it feels like now.’

It felt like considerably more than before.

He activated Overdrive at 60% alongside it.

The invisible surge through his muscles. Legs loaded. Hands faster. Everything dialed up.

Two seconds of low B-rank equivalent force sitting right there in his hands.

’Mid B-rank now,’ he thought. ’With both at current ceiling.’

He stood in the empty training grounds and let that settle.

All in One day.

He picked up his bag and went straight to his dorm room.

He arrived at Room 714 by 8:00 PM.

The squad had filtered through briefly. Torre dropping food, Fen saying something sharp that landed perfectly, Pris appearing in the doorway long enough to nod at Zane specifically before disappearing again. Kael had stopped by last, leaned in the doorway for thirty seconds, said nothing, nodded once, and left.

By 9:00 PM it was just Dex and Zane.

Dex was at his desk eating instant noodles and watching something low on his laptop. Zane was on his bed staring at the ceiling.

Gerald wheezed.

"Tomorrow," Dex said. Not a question. Just the word sitting in the room.

"Tomorrow," Zane said.

Neither of them said anything else for a while.

Then Dex turned his lamp off and the room went dark except for the laptop screen.

"You know," Dex said quietly at the ceiling, "when I did my first rank trial I threw up before the match."

Zane turned his head.

"Seriously," Dex said. "Behind the arena building. Torre was there. He didn’t say anything about it for six months." A pause. "Then he brought it up at dinner in front of everyone."

Zane almost laughed.

"What rank did you place," Zane said.

"Still annoyed about it," Dex said. "Wouldn’t want to say more. Might tell you after your trials."

"You’ll survive," Zane said.

"I did survive," Dex said. "That’s not the point. The point is fourth." He shook his head. "Anyway." He closed the laptop. The room went fully dark. "Tomorrow."

"Tomorrow," Zane said.

Gerald wheezed once. Long and slow.

Zane lay in the dark and looked at the ceiling and thought about 60% Impact Breaker and 60% Overdrive and an angular approach that had been drilled into muscle memory and one opponent whose Sigil he still didn’t know and a bracket number that would become a name tomorrow at 2:15 PM in Arena Two.

Everything he’d built.

Sitting in his hands.

Tomorrow would be the answer to everything he’d been building.

He closed his eyes.
