Chapter 27: Chapter 27| The Weight of Four Days

6:20 AM.

Zane was already on the pad when Maren arrived.

He’d half expected the corner to be empty this morning. After yesterday. After the training grounds and the drill and the two things she’d filed without naming either of them out loud. The butt grab she’d said she ignored. The movement that didn’t match his registration file that she very clearly hadn’t.

She wasn’t empty.

She came through the doors at exactly 6:20 AM the way she always did. Bag over one shoulder. Hair tied back tighter than usual. Her slim fitted training gear left considerably less to the imagination than the academy uniform. The kind of outfit that made sense for movement and made concentrating on anything else require deliberate effort. She crossed the grounds toward their corner without looking up and dropped her bag at the edge of the pad like it was any other morning.

Zane kept his eyes forward.

’Four days until rank trials,’ he reminded himself.

’Focus,’ he thought.

『 Noted. You lasted two seconds longer than yesterday. Progress. 』

’System,’ Zane thought.

『 Moving on. 』

She started her warm up.

No mention of yesterday. No loaded look. No deliberate distance.

Just Maren. At 6:20 AM. In their corner.

Zane filed that away as its own answer and started his warm up beside her.

The daily quest had dropped at 6:05 AM.

『 DAILY TRAINING QUEST 』

『 Objective: Complete 50 Impact Breaker activation reps 』

『 Reward: Impact Breaker activation speed +0.03 seconds 』

『 Penalty: None 』

He moved to the reinforced wall and started his reps while Maren ran burst sequences on the far pad.

Palm flat against the surface. Pressure building through the contact point. Intent focused. Activation contained. Nothing visible, nothing discharged. Just the familiar warmth moving up through his wrist and settling before it became anything the room could see.

0.96 seconds.

0.95.

0.94.

Dropping consistently. The threshold he’d been chasing since week one sitting well inside his reach now instead of grazing the edge of it.

Rep 10. 0.93 seconds.

’Fastest yet,’ he thought.

He kept going. Methodical. No wasted motion between reps. Eyes forward on the wall. Peripheral awareness tracking Maren’s position on the pad the way it always did at this hour without him deciding to do it. A habit that had built itself without announcement somewhere around week two and stayed.

That’s when he noticed it.

Small things. The kind you wouldn’t catch if you hadn’t spent three weeks in the same corner with someone learning the exact texture of how they moved and trained and existed in a space.

She kept her eyes forward more than usual. Not avoiding him exactly. Just not landing on him the way she normally did when she was tracking his movement or filing an observation. Her burst sequences were clean but slightly more deliberate than their usual efficiency. Like she was putting conscious effort into something that normally ran on automatic.

Her timing was off by maybe half a beat on the re-engage between bursts. Barely noticeable. He noticed anyway.

And three times — once at the fifteen minute mark, once at twenty five, once near the end. She started to say something and didn’t. Just let the breath out slowly and went back to her drill without finishing whatever sentence had started behind her eyes.

’She’s not acting like herself,’ Zane thought.

Not cold. Not distant. Just off. Slightly unbalanced in a way that didn’t fit the Maren who asked real questions and knew exactly when to stop asking them and trained through everything with the focused efficiency of someone who had decided emotions were a background process that ran separately from the work.

Something had shifted in the calculation she always ran behind her eyes.

He didn’t push it.

Neither did she.

Rep 30. 0.93 seconds.

Rep 40. 0.92.

’Dropping further,’ he thought.

Rep 45.

Rep 48.

Rep 50.

『 DAILY QUEST COMPLETE 』

『 Reward: Impact Breaker — Activation speed +0.03 seconds 』

『 New activation time: 0.92 seconds 』

’0.92,’ he thought. ’Three weeks ago it was 1.1.’

He walked back toward the pad and rolled his shoulder once. Fifty reps sitting warm in his palm. The activation sequence was muscle memory now. Not something he had to think about initiating, just something that happened when he decided it should.

Maren was finishing her last sequence. She cut the activation clean at nine seconds the way she always did. The technique she’d taught him without knowing she was teaching it. Straightened up.

Reached for her bag.

Then paused.

Looked at him. Directly, properly, the first time she’d held eye contact this morning without it being functional. Without it being about tracking his movement or filing data or processing something she needed to categorise.

Something moved across her expression. Not the calculating stillness that was her default. Something less categorised than that. Softer at the edges without quite being soft. Like she’d started to say the third thing and decided against it for the same reason she’d decided against the first two.

She looked away first.

It was the first time she’d looked away first when the eye contact wasn’t her choice.

’She’s recalibrating,’ Zane thought.

The system surfaced quietly.

『 System Note: Familiarity at 48% produces bidirectional effects. You are more comfortable around her. She is more aware of you. Awareness in someone who processes everything carefully looks like recalibration from the outside. She filed two things yesterday that changed the picture she had of you. People who think carefully take time to adjust a picture that changed. 』

’How long does that take,’ Zane thought.

『 Depends on how many times the new picture contradicts the old one. In her case the contradictions are significant. Give her the time. You have four days before she said she’d address it anyway. 』

’Four days,’ Zane thought. ’She said after trials.’

『 Correct. Which means whatever she’s recalibrating she intends to finish recalibrating before she opens that conversation. She is not someone who speaks before she’s ready. 』

’I know,’ he thought.

That was the thing about Maren. She asked real questions. She knew when to stop. And she didn’t say things until she knew what she meant by them.

Maren picked up her bag properly.

"Same time tomorrow," she said. Voice its usual register but something underneath it that hadn’t been there before yesterday morning. Something she hadn’t put there deliberately and probably knew was there and was choosing not to address yet.

"Same time tomorrow," Zane replied.

She walked toward the exit. Stopped once. Barely, a half step that could have been a stumble in her stride or could have been something else. Then kept going without turning around.

The door closed behind her.

Zane stood in the corner alone.

Early morning light running clean across the composite floor. The training grounds quiet around him. Four days sitting ahead like a wall he’d been walking toward since the first morning he’d pressed his palm against a bathroom stall door and gotten nothing back.

’Four days,’ he thought. ’And she’s suddenly not quite herself around me.’

He looked at the empty pad where she’d been standing a moment ago.

’When did I start being able to tell the difference between her versions of quiet,’ he thought.

No answer for that one.

He picked up his bag and walked back toward the academic block with the morning sitting around him and the weight of four days sitting ahead. And the specific unfamiliar feeling of someone recalibrating in his direction sitting somewhere in between.

Not uncomfortable.

Just new.

And worth paying attention to.
