Chapter 26: Chapter 26| Unfortunate Motivation

Zane walked out of the training grounds alone.

The campus was fully awake now. Students moving between buildings, the academic block entrance ahead, the morning running its usual rhythm around him like nothing had just happened in an empty corner of the practical complex.

He walked through it with Maren’s last words still sitting in his chest.

Whatever that was. Both things. We’ll talk about it after trials.

’Both things,’ he thought.

’She filed them together. The movement that didn’t match my registration. And the other thing.’ He paused on that for a second. ’Which she said she ignored. But still filed.’

He pushed through the academic block entrance.

’Does that mean she won’t train with me until after trials?’ he thought. ’Five days of the corner being empty at 6:20 AM because she decided the conversation needed to happen first?’

The thought sat heavier than he expected.

’When did the 6:20 AM sessions become something I’d actually miss,’ he thought.

No answer for that one. He kept walking.

He pulled up Maren’s familiarity status.

『 MAREN — FAMILIARITY STATUS 』

『 Current: 48% — ACQUAINTANCE TIER 』

『 Overdrive Output Ceiling: 60% 』

『 Next Threshold: 70% — GENUINELY CLOSE 』

『 Distance to next tier: 22% 』

Zane looked at the stats.

’48%,’ he thought. ’From the quest.’

He thought about that for a moment.

’You gave me a quest with familiarity as the reward,’ he thought. ’Which means you already know what actions increase someone’s familiarity. You’ve been sitting on that information.’

『 The system tracks familiarity accumulation across all interaction types. Certain actions produce accelerated results. The quest format surfaces those actions when the system determines the timing is appropriate. 』

’So you know exactly what makes people like me more,’ Zane thought. ’And you’ve been issuing quests based on that data.’

『 Correct. 』

’That’s either very useful or very manipulative,’ he thought.

『 Both, probably. 』

’Which actions accelerate familiarity the most,’ Zane thought.

『 Genuine vulnerability. Shared experience under pressure. Physical proximity with positive emotional context. Consistency over time. And occasionally actions that break established social patterns in a way the other person finds memorable. 』

Zane thought about Maren standing in the training grounds at 7:50 AM specifically to run a drill designed around his situation. Without being asked.

’She’s been accumulating familiarity too,’ he thought. ’Without knowing that’s what she’s doing.’

『 Correct. Familiarity is bidirectional. Her investment in your preparation has been registering since week two. 』

He reached his classroom door and stopped outside it.

’She’ll still train with me,’ he thought. ’She said after trials for the conversation. Not after trials for everything.’

He wasn’t entirely sure he believed that.

But it was what he had.

He pushed through the door and found his seat.

The combined afternoon session ran until 4:30 PM.

Zane sat in his usual spot and ran silent activation drills under the desk. Palm flat. Pressure. Intent. Contained.

1.01 seconds.

Getting there.

Ryan was three rows ahead. Still not turning around. Still preparing quietly with the focused energy of someone who had made their decisions and was done making them.

Zane clocked him once and went back to his drills.

0.99 seconds.

He stopped.

Ran it again.

0.99 seconds.

’Sub-one-second,’ he thought. ’First time.’

『 MILESTONE NOTE: Sub-one-second activation achieved in controlled low-output drill. Replication under pressure required before threshold is considered crossed. 』

’Of course,’ he thought.

He ran it three more times.

1.01. 0.99. 1.00.

Inconsistent. But the threshold was there. He’d touched it. Which meant it was reachable.

The session ended. Students filtered out.

Zane was packing his notebook when Kael appeared at the end of his row.

Not Dex. Just Kael. Alone.

Zane looked at him. "Thought you were supposed to be in the second year block."

"I am," Kael said. "Just came for some sightseeing first." He tilted his head toward the corridor. "Walk with me."

They ended up on the low wall at the edge of the east courtyard. The same wall where Nyx had been sitting when Zane had crossed the courtyard two days ago.

The afternoon light was doing its usual gold thing across the composite ground.

Kael sat with his forearms on his knees and looked at nothing specific for a moment.

"I’ve had a pending file open on you since the second morning," Kael said.

Zane said nothing.

"The shoulder tell you stopped doing," Kael said. "The way your footwork changes between the start and end of a session in ways that don’t track with physical fatigue." He paused. "I’ve been watching someone whose movement occasionally produces sequences that don’t fit their baseline."

Zane kept his expression flat.

"Kael .." he started.

"I’m not asking," Kael said.

Zane stopped.

"I’m telling you what I’ve filed," Kael said. "And then I’m closing the file." He looked at Zane directly. "Whatever you’re carrying into that arena in five days... it’s yours. You built it. I don’t need to know how."

Zane held his gaze.

’He’s closing the file voluntarily,’ he thought. ’Not because he doesn’t have enough data. Because he’s decided it’s not his to open.’

"Why," Zane said.

Kael was quiet for a moment.

"My dad talked about your father," he said. "Said the most technically precise hero he ever watched work was Garrett Calloway. Said he read situations faster than anyone he’d met." He looked back at the courtyard. "Whatever you’re doing. The way you move, the way you think in training. I recognise the pattern. I don’t need the mechanism."

He stood up.

"Five days," Kael said. "Use them." He paused at the edge of the wall. "And for what it’s worth. I hope you’ll be better than your dad."

Not cruel. Just direct. The way Kael said everything.

He walked back toward the main building without looking back.

Zane sat on the wall alone.

’Better than your dad,’ he thought.

The courtyard was quiet around him.

’He recognised the pattern,’ Zane thought. ’And chose to close the file anyway.’

The system was quiet.

Zane looked at the east wing across the courtyard. Lights starting to come on as the afternoon shifted toward evening.

Five days.

He sat there for a while longer before heading back to his dorm.

At Room 714. Dex was asleep. Gerald doing his thing.

Zane dropped onto his bed and stared at the ceiling.

Then it hit him.

’The daily quest,’ he thought. ’I haven’t done it.’

He sat up.

He pulled out his communicator and checked the time.

11:52 PM.

Then the system notification surfaced quietly in his mind.

『 DAILY TRAINING QUEST 』

『 Objective: Complete 50 Impact Breaker activation reps 』

『 Reward: Activation speed +0.03 seconds 』

『 Time Remaining: 8 minutes 』

’8 minutes,’ he thought.

’You have got to be kidding me.’

He looked at Dex. Asleep. Gerald wheezed.

He got up quietly, pressed his palm flat against the desk surface and started his reps in the dark.

Palm. Pressure. Intent. Contained.

1.01 seconds.

0.99.

1.00.

Rep after rep in the quiet of the room. Dex’s breathing slow and even across from him. Gerald wheezing every twenty minutes like a metronome.

By rep 50 his palm was warm and his focus was narrowed down to a single point.

『 DAILY QUEST COMPLETE 』

『 Reward: Activation speed +0.03 seconds 』

『 Impact Breaker — New activation time: 0.96 seconds 』

’Sub-one-second,’ he thought. ’Consistently now.’

He lay back on his bed.

He closed his eyes.
