My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 366: The Ruins Remember
The voice was gone, but the word stayed in Kai’s mind.
Remember.
Remember what?
He looked at the central structure, where the faint blue light pulsed again, once and then twice. Distortion stirred in response, not violently or defensively, but almost as if it recognized something.
Sera noticed his expression. "Kai?"
He didn’t answer.
"Something is happening," Lily said, stepping closer.
Gabriel studied the structure. "The chamber has stopped responding to us."
"I know," Kai said.
"Then what is it responding to?"
Kai started walking toward the light. "I think it’s responding to me."
Sera went right after him. "Kai, wait." She grabbed his arm. "Don’t touch random ancient things."
Kai looked at her. "I wasn’t planning to."
Lily raised an eyebrow. "You absolutely were."
Kai sighed. "That obvious?"
"Yes."
Gabriel laughed quietly, and Sera let go of his arm. "Fine. But we’re staying right here."
Kai nodded and turned back to the structure. The closer he got, the stronger the strange feeling grew. The air around him bent, dust lifted off the floor, and tiny pieces of stone began floating upward.
Then the blue light turned white, and a symbol appeared on the surface of the structure. It was the same broken circle they had seen earlier, but now there was a small figure standing inside it, the shape of a person.
Kai stared at it. "Someone was here."
Lily moved closer. "What?"
"I don’t know." Kai raised his hand, his fingers hovering just above the symbol. When it pulsed, he felt something pull at him, not physically, but somewhere deeper, as if the structure was reaching into his memory.
"Kai," Sera said.
He looked back. "I’ll be fine."
"You don’t know that."
"No," Kai admitted, turning back to the structure. "But I think I need to do this."
Sera clearly didn’t like the answer, but eventually she nodded. "Then we’re right here."
Kai gave her a small smile. "I know."
He placed his hand against the structure.
...
Everything disappeared. The chamber, Aegis, and the others were gone, and there was only darkness until light broke through it and Kai opened his eyes.
A city stood in front of him, larger than Mythal and larger than Nexus. Towers rose into the clouds, floating platforms filled the sky, and roads of light stretched between the buildings while thousands of people moved through the streets. It was alive, beautiful, and far more advanced than anything Kai had ever seen.
Then the sky turned red.
A massive shape broke through the clouds, wings and scales wrapped in lightning, and Kai’s eyes went wide. "Bahamut..."
The vision shook as the city began to scream. Buildings collapsed, energy weapons fired into the sky, and thousands of fighters, Hunters or whatever this age had called them, rose into the air to meet the dragon as it descended.
Then the vision changed to another city with different architecture, different people, and different weapons under a different sky, facing another Disaster. It was followed by another, and then another, each one vanishing before Kai could fully understand it. He saw a red storm, a black flood, and a world covered in fire, then a frozen continent, a swarm that blotted out the sky, and light falling like rain.
"What is this?" Kai said, but the vision didn’t answer.
Some civilizations built walls, while others built weapons or buried themselves in shelters. Some tried to escape, some tried to negotiate, some worshipped the Disasters, and some tried to kill them, and every one of them failed.
Kai watched cities sink beneath waves and mountains split apart, and entire armies vanish under a single attack. He saw people standing together and people turning on one another, rulers abandoning their citizens and soldiers refusing to retreat. He saw civilians carrying wounded Hunters, researchers screaming as their machines failed, and families holding each other as the sky burned.
Then everything went dark, and a single figure appeared.
Kai recognized him immediately. The Candidate stood on a high platform overlooking an ancient city, and he wasn’t fighting or helping anyone. He was only watching.
"You were there," Kai said.
A Disaster was approaching the city below, and the Candidate did nothing. The vision shifted to another civilization, and he was watching again, and then again and again, through every cycle, every civilization, and every failure.
Kai’s expression tightened. "You knew."
The Candidate slowly turned, and for a moment, Kai thought he was looking straight at him.
Then the vision fractured.
...
Kai stood inside a massive chamber in a different place and a different time. A group of exhausted people had gathered there in ancient clothing, surrounded by walls covered in symbols, watching a large screen filled with information Kai couldn’t understand.
Then a familiar symbol appeared on the screen, and Kai froze. It was the System’s symbol.
"No..."
Some of the people watching it looked afraid, while others looked angry. One man was shouting something Kai couldn’t hear, until the vision distorted and the words on the screen became clear.
[Disaster Approaching.]
[Survival Protocol Active.]
[Candidate Selection in Progress.]
Kai’s eyes widened. Candidate selection?
The vision shifted to a group of people standing before a massive structure, and one of them was chosen.
[Test Commencing.]
Kai’s breathing slowed. The Disasters, the Candidate, and the System were all connected, but he couldn’t see how.
The vision fractured again.
...
This time, Kai was standing in a ruined city with no Disaster in the sky, no monsters, and no fighting. There was only silence. This civilization had already fallen.
As he walked through the ruins, he saw someone standing alone in the middle of the street. They wore ancient clothing and carried a weapon at their side, their body covered in blood, and they were staring up at the sky. They weren’t afraid, and they weren’t fighting. They were looking at something Kai couldn’t see.
Kai followed their gaze, and at first there was nothing. Then the sky cracked.
It wasn’t a storm or a portal. Reality itself seemed to split open, and behind it was something enormous that didn’t belong in the sky. It wasn’t a monster or a Disaster, and it wasn’t anything Kai had a name for. His mind struggled to even hold the shape of it.
The ancient figure took a step backward, and for the first time, Kai saw real fear on their face, the kind that came from seeing something that should not exist. They turned to the System display.
[Disaster Status: None.]
The figure stared at it, then back at the sky. The impossible presence was still there, and the System showed nothing, no warning, no classification, and no threat level at all.
The ancient warrior slowly clenched their fists, and for the first time, Kai could hear a voice in the vision. It sounded exhausted and almost broken.
"The System isn’t protecting us."
The vision shook violently. The city, the figure, and the impossible thing all vanished, and everything turned white.
...
Kai’s hand snapped away from the structure, and he stumbled backward into Sera’s arms.
"Kai!"
He gasped, unable to speak for several seconds while Sera held his shoulder. The chamber came back into focus around him, with its pillars, the broken throne, and the central platform, and Lily and Gabriel were both staring at him.
"Kai?" Lily said, her face full of worry.
He slowly straightened as his breathing settled, and Sera’s voice grew quieter. "What did you see?"
For a moment, Kai thought about telling them everything, the cities, the Candidate, the System, and the figure staring at the broken sky. But something stopped him. It wasn’t fear. It was instinct, and he couldn’t explain it.
Behind him, the blue light was fading, and the mechanism was falling silent again.
Kai swallowed. "I’m not sure yet."
Sera stared at him, because she knew him too well. "That’s not an answer."
"It’s the closest I’ve got."
She didn’t look convinced.
Lily stepped closer. "Did you see the past?"
"Not exactly."
"Then what did you see?"
Kai hesitated. "Fragments. Civilizations, and the Disasters they faced."
The room went quiet.
"You saw them?" Sera asked.
"Yes."
"How many?"
Kai shook his head. "Too many to count."
He thought of the Candidate standing above city after city, watching and waiting, and then of that lone figure staring at something beyond the sky that the System refused to recognize.
Kai closed his hand into a fist. The Aegis records, Bahamut, and his own trial had already told him the Disasters were tests. The vision had shown him something the records hadn’t. Beyond the cycle, there was something else, something the System had never classified, and it had terrified the people who saw it.
He looked up at the artificial stars still covering the ceiling, and for the first time, they didn’t look beautiful. They looked like a warning.
Sera stepped beside him. "You’re thinking again."
Kai glanced at her. "Always."
"What did you really see?"
Kai looked at her, then at Lily and Gabriel. He could tell them, but he didn’t know enough yet, and if he was wrong, he could lead all of them in the wrong direction.
So he looked back toward the ruins. "I saw enough to know that Aegis wasn’t the beginning."
Sera frowned. "And?"
Kai’s eyes hardened. "It wasn’t the end either."
Nobody spoke.
BOOM.
The entire ruin shook, and Lily looked around. "What was that?"
Gabriel’s face turned serious. "I don’t know."
Kai stared into the darkness beneath Aegis. The Disasters didn’t just destroy civilizations. They measured them. But somewhere beyond that cycle, something else was waiting, and whatever it was, the System had never called it a Disaster.
