My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 365: The Judgement
The moment the message appeared, the entire chamber went silent.
FOURTH JUDGMENT INITIATED.
Kai stared at the words floating above the central platform, and nobody moved.
BOOM.
The floor lurched, and Lily nearly lost her balance. "Whoa!"
Sera reached for her sword, and Gabriel raised one hand. "Everyone, stay together."
Another tremor rolled through the chamber, shaking dust from the ceiling as the enormous pillars around them began to glow. Ancient symbols spread across their surfaces one after another, shifting from blue to white and finally to gold.
Lily looked around in amazement. "The systems are activating one by one."
Kai narrowed his eyes. "Defensive systems?"
"I don’t think so."
"That isn’t very reassuring."
Lily ignored him, already studying the nearest pillar. "There aren’t any weapon signatures."
Gabriel looked toward the platform. "Then what is it doing?"
Kai didn’t answer. Something felt wrong, though not dangerous in the usual sense. The air around him had changed, and Distortion was moving quietly beneath his skin. The chamber wasn’t just waking up. It was looking at them.
A click sounded beneath their feet, and Kai’s eyes sharpened. "Move!"
Everyone reacted at once. Sera grabbed Lily, and Gabriel stepped back as the floor burst upward and walls of stone erupted between them.
"Kai!" Sera’s voice cut off behind a massive slab.
Kai pressed his hand against the wall and pushed, but it didn’t budge. When he called on Distortion, the air twisted around his fingers, and still nothing happened. He frowned. The stone wasn’t resisting his strength. It was resisting his ability, and that meant the chamber was deliberately separating them.
"Kai!" Sera’s voice came from somewhere beyond the wall.
"I’m fine! Lily?"
"I’m here!"
"Gabriel?"
"Still alive."
Kai let out a breath. Everyone was alive.
Then the chamber changed again. The walls didn’t move, but his vision did, and suddenly the ancient chamber was gone. Kai was standing in the middle of Mythal.
His eyes went wide. "Mythal?"
The city was burning. Buildings had collapsed, smoke covered the sky, and the road stretching ahead of him was one he recognized immediately, the road to the city center. There were no Hunters on it, no civilians, no construction crews, and no children. It was completely empty.
"What’s happening?" Kai said.
"City Leader."
He turned, and Mira was standing behind him with blood covering her clothes.
"Mira?"
She looked at him. "You weren’t here. You left." She pointed toward the ruined city. "And everyone died."
The scene shifted, and one by one, the people he knew appeared around her. Sera, Lily, Elden, Raze, Mina, and Leo, every face familiar and every one of them dead.
Kai’s fists tightened. "This isn’t real."
"No," Mira said, pointing at him. "But you are. You were supposed to protect us."
The words hit harder than any attack, and Kai looked away. "I did."
"No," Mira said quietly as the ruins shifted around them. "You protected the city. You didn’t protect us."
Kai’s eyes narrowed, because he understood now. This wasn’t a memory. It was trying to force him to choose between the city and its people.
A red warning appeared across the sky.
CIVILIZATION COLLAPSE IMMINENT.
REMAIN AND PROTECT THE CITY.
OR LEAVE THE CITY AND SAVE THOSE WHO REMAIN.
"So that’s the test," Kai said.
The scene didn’t answer, and there was no obvious right choice. If he stayed, he might save Mythal, but if he left, the city would be abandoned. Then Kai noticed that none of the people around him were moving. Mira, Sera, Lily, and Elden were all staring at him, waiting for his decision.
Kai slowly shook his head. "No."
The illusion froze.
"I don’t accept the choice." The world trembled as he stepped forward. "You’re asking me to choose between protecting the city and protecting the people, but that’s exactly what Aegis did." Cracks spread across the burning sky. "They separated the two."
The entire scene shattered.
...
When Sera opened her eyes, she was standing in a completely different chamber.
"Kai?"
No one answered. Lily, Gabriel, and Kai were all gone, and Sera reached for her sword. "Great."
Light slowly filled the room, and a figure appeared in front of her. It was Kai, kneeling on the ground with blood covering his face.
"Sera," he said.
She froze. "What happened?"
"I can’t move."
Sera started toward him, then stopped as a message appeared in the air.
THREAT DETECTED.
PROTECT YOURSELF.
She looked at Kai, then back at the message, and Kai raised his head. "Don’t come closer. It’s a trap."
The moment he said it, the chamber erupted, and blades shot from the walls. Sera dodged the first, then the second, then the third, but more kept coming. She knew she could survive this if she kept moving.
"Sera!" Kai screamed.
She turned and saw a blade flying straight at him. She had two choices, keep moving or go back, and she didn’t hesitate. She turned around, and the blade passed inches from her face as she grabbed Kai and pulled him clear.
The room went silent, and the illusion of Kai vanished from her arms.
Sera stared at the empty space. "Really?"
A message appeared.
SELF-PRESERVATION: FAILED.
Sera blinked, and then she laughed once. "You wanted me to leave him?" The chamber didn’t respond, and she raised her sword with a smile. "Wrong person."
...
Lily’s trial was different.
She stood inside a massive relic chamber, surrounded by hundreds of ancient machines, with a single glowing device resting at its center. Her eyes went wide as she stepped closer. It was a relic unlike anything she had ever seen, far more advanced than anything she had studied in Nexus, and her hands were almost shaking.
A message appeared.
ARCHIVE ACCESS AVAILABLE.
"Seriously?" Lily whispered.
The chamber opened around her, and thousands of records appeared, filled with ancient technology, energy systems, weapons, and maps of civilizations she had never heard of. Everything she had spent her life studying was here.
ACCESS WILL BE GRANTED.
Lily smiled. "Finally."
Then a second message appeared beneath the first.
ACCESS WILL RESULT IN PERMANENT SEPARATION FROM THE OTHERS.
Her smile disappeared. She looked behind her, but no one was there, and the chamber simply waited. This was everything she had ever wanted, knowledge no modern researcher had ever touched. She could become the greatest relic researcher in the world, and all she had to do was stay.
Lily stared at the archive for several seconds. Then she turned away. "No."
The archive vanished, and she walked toward the exit. "I can find another archive." She smiled faintly into the darkness. "Besides, Kai would never let me hear the end of it if I abandoned everyone for a library."
The chamber went dark.
...
Gabriel’s trial was the quietest.
She stood inside an ancient church that looked almost exactly like the Astral Church, only far older. Its walls were covered in names, dates, Disasters, and civilizations, the knowledge the modern Church had spent centuries trying to recover.
"You can have it," a voice said.
Gabriel looked up. A figure stood at the altar. "You can take all of it and restore everything the Church has lost. You could save countless lives."
Gabriel’s expression softened. "And the others?"
"They are not required."
Her eyes hardened. "Then I don’t want it."
The figure tilted its head. "You would abandon knowledge?"
"No." Gabriel looked around the ancient church. "I would refuse to become someone who believes knowledge belongs to her."
The illusion cracked, and Gabriel smiled. "I’ve made that mistake before."
The church disappeared.
...
Kai opened his eyes back in the ancient chamber. The stone walls were still standing and the pillars were still glowing, but Sera was nowhere in sight.
"Damn it."
He started walking without knowing where he was going, since there was no clear path, until the sharp ring of a sword striking stone echoed from somewhere nearby.
"Sera."
Kai ran toward the sound, through one corridor and then another, until he burst into a massive chamber where Sera stood in the center, fighting off several ancient stone warriors.
"Sera!"
She glanced over. "Finally."
The warriors turned toward Kai and raised their weapons, and he sighed. "Fine."
Distortion spread through the room. The first warrior lunged, and Kai vanished, leaving its weapon to cut through empty air before he reappeared behind it and shattered it with a single strike. Sera cut down another, then another, and within seconds the floor was covered in broken stone.
Sera looked at him. "That was annoying."
"Yeah."
"Did you see anything?"
Kai hesitated. "Mythal."
Sera’s expression changed. "I saw you."
Kai looked at her. "What happened?"
"You first."
Kai almost smiled. "Fair."
Before either of them could say more, the chamber shook, and a door opened behind them. Lily stepped through. "Finally!"
"You okay?" Kai asked.
"I’m fine." She looked around. "Where’s Gabriel?"
"Here," Gabriel said, stepping out of another opening.
The four of them stood together again, and for a moment, no one said anything.
Lily pushed her glasses up. "So that was definitely a test."
"Obviously," Sera said.
Gabriel looked toward the central structure. "It wanted us separated."
"Not exactly," Kai said, and they turned to him. "It wanted us to choose whether we’d abandon someone when it benefited us."
Sera crossed her arms. "And that was supposed to prove what?"
Kai looked at the ancient walls. "The same thing Aegis failed to prove."
Sera looked around the chamber. "So the whole thing was built to see if we’d make the same mistakes they did."
Kai glanced at what was left of the throne. "Probably."
Lily frowned. "Then why separate us?"
"To see if we’d come back," Kai said.
Nobody said anything after that.
The chamber shook again, and the central platform lit up as a massive symbol formed above it. The four of them watched it split into four pieces, one for each of them, before the pieces came back together into a single unbroken circle.
A voice echoed through the chamber.
"JUDGMENT CONDITION SATISFIED."
The ancient mechanisms stopped, every pillar dimmed, and the heavy pressure in the air disappeared. For several seconds, nothing happened.
Lily looked around. "That’s it?"
Sera lowered her sword. "I was expecting something bigger."
Gabriel smiled. "Perhaps the reward comes next."
Kai didn’t answer, because he was staring at the central structure. The chamber had gone still, but the platform was still glowing. He walked toward it, and Sera followed. "Kai?"
He stopped as the glow grew brighter and a thin line cracked across the center of the platform, then another, and another, until the whole structure began to open. Ancient stone slid apart with a deep mechanical groan.
GRRRRRR...
Lily’s eyes widened, and she stepped forward. "Wait. That isn’t a door."
Kai looked at her. "What is it?"
"It’s a memory device." Lily swallowed. "Or something designed to store one."
The structure finished opening, and inside, there was nothing. There was no weapon, no treasure, and no relic, only a single empty space.
Kai stared into it, and then he understood. "This wasn’t the judgment."
"Then what was it?" Lily asked.
Kai stepped toward the opening, his expression serious. "A record."
The moment he said it, everything went dark. The chamber lost its light, the stars above them disappeared, the pillars went black, and even Distortion fell strangely quiet.
Kai stood completely still until a faint blue light appeared inside the open structure. It pulsed once, twice, three times, and Kai felt something shift inside the ruins, deeper than any machine, like something that had been waiting.
Sera stepped closer. "Kai..."
He didn’t answer. The blue light grew brighter, and then a voice spoke. It didn’t come from the walls, the machines, or the structure. It sounded like it was coming from somewhere impossibly far away.
"Remember."
