"Vesper, why is your hair so black? Did you dye it?"

Vesper Carter had just tucked her long hair behind her ear when Lorelei Howard asked in surprise.

Today Michael Lancaster had brought his girlfriend home, and while the girl was pretty enough, her hair was sparse and brownish. That’s why Lorelei deliberately asked.

Previously, Eva Hayes was always showing off in front of her, bragging about how great her future son-in-law was. Today, Lorelei finally had a chance to show off.

Upon hearing Lorelei’s question, Violet Zimmerman instinctively turned her head to look.

Vesper Carter wore her long hair half tied with an elastic band, the other half draped on her shoulders. Her hair was sleek and shiny black, looking very pretty.

Violet Zimmerman unconsciously touched her own hair, styled into a shoulder-length perm since her wedding.

She initially thought her hairstyle looked good, but after her mother-in-law’s remarks, she suddenly realized that women with long hair were more attractive.

There was an uneasy feeling in her heart.

Violet Zimmerman was a beautiful woman, outstanding among her peers, but comparing herself to Vesper Carter made her feel somewhat inferior.

Vesper Carter looked elegant and refined; no wonder her brother-in-law asked her to pose as his girlfriend.

"No, Aunt, my hair is naturally like this, it’s not dyed," Vesper Carter said with a smile.

"Ah, being young is nice. You see, Aunt’s hair is already getting white," Lorelei Howard lamented with a smile.

Beside her, Eva Hayes scoffed, perhaps refraining from making sarcastic remarks because her future daughter-in-law was present.

After dinner, it was already eight in the evening, and Vesper Carter was getting ready to leave when Lorelei Howard asked her to stay.

"It’s already dark, it’s better to stay at Aunt’s house tonight, and you can go to the company with Joseph in the morning."

Vesper Carter instinctively turned to Joseph Lancaster, hesitantly saying, "This... might not be good."

Having stayed alone in the office for two months, she felt quite uneasy at night.

"What’s wrong with that? You’ve been with Joseph for so long and haven’t stayed at Aunt’s place yet."

Lorelei Howard warmly took Vesper Carter’s hand, not giving her a chance to refuse, smiling, "Tonight stay at Joseph’s place; he has several vacant guest rooms there!"

Vesper Carter pursed her lips, saying nothing more.

"Mom, Vesper and I aren’t engaged yet. Sharing a room is bad form. Aurora has a place, let Vesper stay with Aurora tonight, they’re both girls, it’s convenient,"

Joseph Lancaster finished speaking, and Vesper Carter’s smile noticeably faltered.

Joseph Lancaster didn’t give his mother a chance to protest, turning to his sister Aurora Lancaster, "Aurora, it’s late, take Vesper back to rest."

The future sister-in-law, Aurora Lancaster, didn’t dare neglect her, especially since Vesper Carter was cultured and graceful. She immediately stepped over, warmly taking Vesper Carter’s hand, "Come on, Vesper, let’s go to our place!"

Vesper Carter was led away by the enthusiastic Aurora Lancaster, while Joseph Lancaster also stood up, "Dad, Mom, it’s late, I’ll head to bed too,"

Joseph Lancaster stifled a yawn behind his hand.

Lorelei Howard glared at him displeased, "It’s still early, and I’m not tired yet!"

Joseph Lancaster chuckled, "I just drank a lot of white wine with my brother, I’m a bit tipsy."

Watching her second son’s departing figure, Lorelei Howard puzzled aloud, "Arthur, you know, Joseph isn’t young anymore. You’d think he’d be thrilled at the opportunity of having Vesper stay over, but he sent her away."

"You old woman! What goes on in your mind all day?" Bodhi Lancaster grumbled as he stood, flinging his sleeve towards the stairs.

"What’s with the shouting? Young people are all like this now! How many wait until marriage to move in together?" Lorelei Howard complained at her husband’s retreating back.

...

Violet Zimmerman lay on the bed playing with her son, while Daxton Lancaster was downstairs on the phone.

"...Would you like something for discomfort? Sister Zimmerman made hangover soup; I’ll have her bring it over soon..."

After hanging up, Daxton Lancaster headed upstairs, and once back in the room, he instructed Violet Zimmerman, "Joseph went back, you go and give him some hangover soup."

"Daddy... Daddy..." Robert Lancaster saw Daxton come over and scooted over, reaching out with his arms.

Daxton Lancaster lifted Robert Lancaster, saying happily, "Big son, you just call for Dad! Why not call for Mom!"

Seeing Violet Zimmerman look at him with confusion, Daxton turned to her, his sharp eyes serious, "Aren’t you going? Aren’t you planning on giving Robert a brother?"

Violet Zimmerman realized what Daxton meant about the hangover soup, dropping her eyes in hesitation before silently heading to the door.

Behind her, Daxton’s joyful voice rang out, "Son, call for Dad again, Dad loves to hear it..."

Holding a box of hangover soup, Violet Zimmerman couldn’t quite identify her feelings, whether joy, anticipation, or sadness... But her heart trembled with excitement.

She checked herself in the mirror before leaving, even smoothing her hair with wax. If Daxton weren’t in the room, she might have put on some lipstick too.

Carrying the lunch box, she walked into Joseph Lancaster’s small courtyard, instinctively looking upwards at the faint glow from a window on the second floor, her lips curving upward.

A little past eight, folks were still awake in the courtyard, and Violet Zimmerman pushed the gate open, entering.

"Madam, you’ve arrived!" A servant warmly approached, placing slippers at Violet Zimmerman’s feet.

Violet Zimmerman murmured a quiet "Mm," changing into the slippers while asking, "Where’s Joseph?"

"The young master said he had a headache, went to rest in his room."

"Oh, he probably drank too much. Daxton asked me to bring over some hangover soup," Violet Zimmerman explained, carrying the lunch box to the stairs.

Blair Williams watched her retreating figure, lingering for a moment before returning to her own room.

"Joseph, are you asleep?"

Violet Zimmerman gently knocked on the door, trying the handle, but the door was locked from within.

After drinking quite a bit of white wine, Joseph Lancaster was suffering a severe headache and grumbled as he heard the knocking, flipping over and continuing to doze.

"Joseph, it’s me, your sister-in-law," Violet Zimmerman raised her voice, and almost instantly, Joseph Lancaster shot upright.

Sitting on the bed, his bloodshot eyes momentarily dazed, he swiftly reacted, getting out of bed hurriedly without bothering with his shoes, striding over to unlock the door.

Seeing the woman standing in front of his door, he instinctively spoke.

"Sister-in-law?"

"I came to bring you some hangover soup," Violet Zimmerman didn’t rush to enter, she smiled warmly at Joseph Lancaster.

Her moist eyes inadvertently shimmering with affection, her smile equally gentle.

Joseph Lancaster’s sensual Adam’s apple bobbed conspicuously as he swallowed, stepping aside, "Come in."
