Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride

Chapter 1612 - 1598: Where the Eyes Fall, There Abides Forever—Not Good at Dealing with People

"What are you, a kid, doing meddling here?" Lorelei Howard grumbled unhappily, while Emily Zimmerman cheerfully agreed, "Sure, it’s more fun to watch a movie with more people."

The three women were in chorus throughout, not giving Joseph Lancaster a chance to speak.

Hearing that she could join, Aurora Lancaster couldn’t sit still any longer, standing up and saying, "Second brother, I’m going back to change clothes first. You two better not leave without me!"

Aurora Lancaster happily ran out, and Lorelei Howard shook her head helplessly, "This child! Emily, Aurora is still young and naive, don’t take it to heart."

"Auntie, it’s fine. The more, the merrier."

Watching Emily Zimmerman’s polite and poised demeanor, Violet Zimmerman suddenly felt a bit inferior. An educated woman is indeed different. She recalled when she first came to the Lancaster Family for dinner, she didn’t even dare to look up, let alone chat naturally with her mother-in-law.

Across from her, Eva Hayes abruptly stood up with a hostile tone, "Don’t just sit there foolishly. Let’s go, they’re having a chat with the daughter-in-law, it’s none of our business!"

Emily Zimmerman’s smile froze on her lips. Having just arrived, she had no idea about Eva Hayes’s temperament.

In front of the new daughter-in-law, Lorelei Howard didn’t know what to say, and Arthur Saunders disapprovingly glanced at the family walking out, his expression not very pleasant.

"Emily, don’t take it to heart. Your second mother has this kind of personality; she’s not targeting you."

After Atlas Lancaster’s family left, Lorelei Howard explained, but her explanation only made Emily Zimmerman more awkward.

Seeing Emily Zimmerman at a loss, Violet Zimmerman’s mood inexplicably improved. She unconsciously caressed her swollen belly, unable to hide her good mood despite her pressed lips.

Seeing Violet Zimmerman’s reaction, Joseph Lancaster felt an inexplicable helplessness.

The three of them went to see a movie. Violet Zimmerman, holding Daxton Lancaster’s arm, walked slowly back to her residence.

"Daxton, it seems like Mom really likes Joseph’s girlfriend."

Daxton Lancaster turned his eyes, "What? Jealous?"

"No, just a bit envious." There was obvious disappointment on Violet Zimmerman’s face.

Daxton Lancaster asked, "What are you envious of?"

"If I had been diligent in learning business from Dad and my brothers while working at the family company, I wouldn’t be sitting idle at home like this now."

"Silly, who says you’re idly staying at home all day? You’re pregnant, aren’t you."

"Daxton, can you teach me business when the child grows a little older?" Talking business with clients, like Dad and my brothers do, has always been what Violet Zimmerman longed for.

The family prioritized men over women, and business was always the matters for her two brothers.

"Isn’t it good to be at home taking care of the family and children?" Daxton Lancaster countered, with a smile in his eyes, then continued before Violet Zimmerman could speak, "Earning a living is a man’s job. You just need to enjoy life at home!"

"But staying at home all the time is quite boring."

"Aren’t Mom and the second aunt staying at home all the time too?"

With Daxton Lancaster’s words, Violet Zimmerman suddenly found herself speechless. Her mother-in-law and second aunt had stayed home for most of their lives without complaint,

while she had only been married for over a year.

Back in those days, many were waiting for jobs and envied those who had them, even if the work was tiring.

But Violet Zimmerman and Daxton Lancaster never shared this sentiment; Violet didn’t want to be a bird in a cage, while Daxton thought he could provide the best life for his daughter, so his woman wouldn’t need to toil outside.

When the three came back from the movie, it was already past ten. As they passed Violet Zimmerman’s residence, Joseph Lancaster instinctively glanced inside through the car window.

Except for the two lanterns at the door, the small building was completely dark.

Joseph Lancaster knew that by this time Violet Zimmerman was already asleep, but for some unknown reason, thinking about taking another woman to the movies while Violet still managed to sleep, he felt a vague disappointment.

In the Lancaster Family, besides Joseph’s own family, everyone got along well with Emily Zimmerman.

Emily was generous and polite, and very adept at handling situations. Within days of moving into the family, even Eva Hayes, known to be difficult, was won over by her.

She arranged for her father to use his connections to buy lots of malt extracts for the old man and gifted Lorelei Howard and Eva Hayes cosmetics, bought Maximilian Lancaster a set of children’s clothes, a dress for Aurora Lancaster, and even gifted Violet Zimmerman a maternity dress.

Everyone happily accepted their gifts, except for Violet Zimmerman, who felt increasingly uncomfortable watching the whole family being won over by Emily Zimmerman.

Violet suddenly realized how clueless she was about social interactions. She had always thought the Lancaster Family was wealthy and didn’t lack anything, completely overlooking that there’s a different feeling between things bought for oneself and those gifted by others.

Being such a clumsy and socially inept daughter-in-law, no wonder her mother-in-law didn’t like her.

Since returning from the old man’s house, Violet Zimmerman had been feeling sullen.

Daxton Lancaster noticed her unhappiness but didn’t know the reason.

"What’s wrong? Is the baby being naughty again?"

"No." Lying on the bed, Violet Zimmerman turned her face towards the inside, resting her hands behind her head.

"Then what’s the matter? Who made you upset?"

Daxton Lancaster sat on the bed, turned his body as well, and put a hand on Violet’s shoulder. He had noticed something was off with Violet when Emily Zimmerman gave out gifts.

"Daxton, am I really that bad at getting along with people?"

Looking ahead, Violet Zimmerman asked gloomily, her mood low.

"Why do you say that?" Daxton Lancaster had a faint smile in his eyes, finally understanding why his wife was upset.

"I’ve been married into the family for over a year and haven’t given anyone a gift."

No wonder no one liked her, even her sister-in-law was always going in and out of the old man’s house with Emily Zimmerman, always talking about Emily, never stopping.

"Silly, you’re the Lady of the house, you don’t need to please anyone; if you’re unhappy, they all have to look at your face."

Daxton Lancaster gently stroked Violet Zimmerman’s cheek, his expression turning serious.

Violet Zimmerman suddenly turned her head, looking seriously at him and asked, "And what about you? If I’m unhappy, will you look at my face too?"
