Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride
Chapter 1564 - 1555: Wherever My Gaze Falls, There Shall Be Everlasting: If I Don’t Care, Who Will?
"Why are you so careless? Do you know how expensive this millet is? Can’t you be a bit more careful?"
Lorelei Howard turned to her younger son, Joseph Lancaster, with displeasure, while Violet Zimmerman lowered her head and sat down in her seat, understanding why her uncle reacted so strongly.
"Granddaughter-in-law, are you pregnant?" The old man showed surprise, and Lorelei Howard also turned back, asking with a face full of expectation.
"Violet, tell mom, have you had any cravings lately, or have you felt like vomiting when seeing certain things?"
Lorelei Howard finished asking, and at the adjacent table, Joseph Lancaster immediately perked up his ears.
Violet Zimmerman forced a smile, thanked the servant who brought her the porridge, and then said to Lorelei Howard, "Mom, I don’t have any particular cravings and no food aversions either."
"Alas, seems like you’re not pregnant," Lorelei Howard sighed disappointedly, and the old man was clearly let down as well.
At the adjacent table, Joseph Lancaster grumbled, "You’re not a doctor, how do you know my sister-in-law isn’t pregnant!"
"Pfft! Cough, cough..." This time, Violet Zimmerman sputtered out her porridge.
"Why are you butting in, child? Stay out of the adults’ conversation!"
Lorelei Howard rebuked in displeasure, while Violet Zimmerman continued to cough, the millet stuck in her throat, uncomfortable, her face flushed red. Joseph Lancaster stood up and went to Violet Zimmerman’s side, gently patting her back while emphasizing, "Mom, I’m an adult now, not a child!"
Joseph Lancaster’s actions appeared natural, as if he often helped Violet Zimmerman this way.
In the eyes of the family, he and Aurora Lancaster were always seen as children because they were the only ones still in school, so no one thought much of it.
"Alright, alright, you’re an adult. Next year, we’ll find you a wife," Lorelei Howard said impatiently, then stood up, "Violet, you and Joseph eat, I’m going back."
"Mom, take care,"
Violet Zimmerman said politely, Lorelei Howard responded and greeted the old man.
"Dad, I’m heading back."
"Mm."
The old man made a nasal sound and also got up, heading back to his room to rest, feeling very disappointed that the granddaughter-in-law wasn’t pregnant.
The spacious living room was left with just the uncle and niece-in-law, seeing Violet Zimmerman still coughing, Joseph Lancaster frowned.
"You’re such a grown-up, how come you’re so careless!"
After speaking, he shouted towards the kitchen behind, "Aunt Wu, bring a cup of water over!"
Joseph Lancaster had often told her she was careless before, but Violet Zimmerman never felt much about it. Now, though, she felt quite uncomfortable, even somewhat aggrieved.
Instantly, she raised her hand to push Joseph Lancaster away, with obvious emotion, "Get off, I don’t need you to care for me!"
Earlier, he was bothered that Violet Zimmerman wouldn’t ride his bicycle, and now seeing her throw a little tantrum at him, Joseph Lancaster’s mood inexplicably improved.
With eyes brimming with a smile, he leaned closer to Violet Zimmerman’s ear and asked softly, "If not me, then who?"
The moment the words left his mouth, both of them were stunned.
Violet Zimmerman turned to look at him, one hand still held up, seemingly not expecting him to deliberately flirt with her, given that they had done that thing and should avoid suspicion.
As for Joseph Lancaster, he was frustrated with himself for asking such a question, something that should have been part of a lover’s interaction, but here he was... speaking this way to his sister-in-law.
Feeling annoyed, the young man immediately sat back down in his seat and buried himself in his breakfast.
Joseph Lancaster did not speak again, remaining angry with himself.
