Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune
Chapter 460: Anne Sutton Refused
Getting a marriage proposal from Nathan Fawcett was probably the dream of many unmarried girls in Veridia.
Anne Sutton looked at the man before her, and for some reason, her heart was in turmoil.
She knew she was very fond of this man.
She liked him… and she liked being with him.
She also knew that when they were together, Nathan Fawcett treated her very well.
But for some reason, as she watched Nathan kneel before her on one knee, asking her to marry him, she just…
felt no impulse to marry him whatsoever.
Maybe it was because they had been arguing over small things recently.
Or maybe it was because they had previously agreed they wouldn’t get married again.
She looked at Nathan Fawcett, not reaching for the ring he offered.
Amidst the encouraging cheers of the crowd, Anne Sutton said, “I’m sorry, but I don’t want to get married yet.”
Everyone was a little surprised when Anne said this.
Caleb Summers stood to the side, looking at Anne. “Are you crazy?”
Nathan Fawcett was being so sincere, and she actually rejected him?
Nathan looked at Anne, not having expected her to refuse either.
He thought their relationship had been going very well lately.
Sharon Sutton and Mrs. Sutton stood together, also looking surprised as they watched Anne turn Nathan down.
Seeing everyone staring at her, Anne said, “I’m sorry, I’m not ready. This whole marriage thing is just too sudden for me.”
Especially since she had told Nathan before that they wouldn’t get married again, and he had agreed.
She never thought he would one day propose to her.
While it was meant to be a surprise, she truly had no intention of getting married.
…
Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said, “It’s okay. It’s your choice.”
If she said yes, it would be his honor.
If she said no, that was her right.
Despite this, Nathan was still in a terrible mood.
After dinner, everyone left the hotel.
Anna Linden took Ian and Finn home.
Anne Sutton was in the car with Mrs. Sutton and Sharon Sutton.
Mrs. Sutton was driving.
Sharon looked at Anne and said, “Sis, why didn’t you say yes? Aren’t you and Nathan Fawcett on good terms?”
Besides, this is Nathan Fawcett we’re talking about!
What an honor it would be to marry him!
Anne frowned at her sister’s words. “I don’t know.”
She just…
didn’t want to say yes!
In that moment, she had simply followed her heart.
Perhaps it was because everything in the past—whether it was her engagement to Charles Prescott or her marriage to Nathan Fawcett—had happened without her having a real choice.
Even though she had been unwilling at the time, she was forced by circumstances to make those decisions. But…
she didn’t want to live like that anymore!
She didn’t want to force herself to do something her heart wasn’t in.
…
Nathan Fawcett left with Caleb Summers and the others.
After leaving the hotel, they went to a private bar owned by a friend.
Caleb looked at Nathan, seeing he was clearly in a foul mood. He complained, “I don’t know what Anne Sutton is thinking. You prepared for so long, and she just rejected you. It’s obvious she has no respect for you.”
“I already said, it’s her right.”
Caleb said, “Tell me, is she still in love with Charles Prescott? Did his recent divorce give her hope again? I heard Charles and Mia Shaw divorced because of her!”
Nathan’s head snapped up, his expression turning cold as he looked at Caleb. “What are you talking about?”
“Nathan!” Caleb didn’t shut his mouth immediately after being warned, as he usually would. “I’m only telling you this because I see you as a brother. Charles Prescott and Anne Sutton have known each other for so long—they’re childhood sweethearts. Think about it. Isn’t her attitude toward him ridiculous? I think she’s been using you as a tool from the very beginning. Her heart has never been with you. You even have a child together, yet she’s unwilling to marry you! Are you telling me she doesn’t like you?”
Listening to Caleb, Nathan said, “She doesn’t like Charles Prescott. Her not wanting to get married is because I haven’t done enough.”
“Where haven’t you done enough?” Caleb retorted. “Any other woman would think you’ve done more than enough! What more could you possibly do? You even gave her the Fawcett Group! And she still treats you like this! What other man could do that much? Who the hell does she think she is? She’s just some slut who’s been passed around. Does she really think she’s some kind of goddess?!”
Now that he considered Nathan his brother, he naturally couldn’t stand the sight of Anne.
Caleb had barely finished speaking when Nathan’s fist slammed into him, knocking him straight to the ground.
Caleb didn’t get up. He just sat on the steps where he’d fallen, looked at Nathan’s furious face, and said, “You’re angry, which proves I’m right, doesn’t it? She doesn’t want to marry you. Isn’t that obvious enough? If she had you in her heart, would she have the heart to humiliate you like this today? In front of so many people, she showed you absolutely no respect.”
The thought made Caleb furious.
He felt it was completely unfair to Nathan.
Nathan sat to the side, not bothering to waste his breath arguing with Caleb.
Anne Sutton first went home with Sharon and Mrs. Sutton.
Ever since she moved into the Linden Family’s home, she only came back on weekends to spend time with her mother and sister.
Strangely enough, however, she always felt more relaxed and at ease in her own home than at the Lindens’.
Even though nothing here could compare to the luxury of the Linden Group.
Anne was in her room, looking outside. It had started to rain.
She picked up her phone and glanced at Nathan Fawcett’s contact info. They usually left together after dinner, but today, he hadn’t left with her.
‘He must be in a terrible mood right now!’
Having rejected him, Anne felt a strange unease in her heart.
‘Will Nathan be angry?’
‘Although his temper has seemed much better lately.’
But she truly hadn’t been mentally prepared for him to propose today.
Mrs. Sutton came in. “Anne.”
Anne looked at her. “Mom.”
Mrs. Sutton began, “About you and Nathan…”
Hearing her mother’s words, Anne asked, “Do you also think I shouldn’t have rejected him today?”
“I could tell Nathan was very disappointed.”
Anne said, “I don’t know why. I like him, and I’m happy when I’m with him, but I just don’t want to get married. Maybe there’s something wrong with me.”
Everything she had been through in the past had left her with a sense of fear about marriage.
She always felt that Nathan Fawcett wasn’t a man she could truly handle.
Although…
he did treat her very well and had been constantly changing his personality for her.
Anne lowered her head and said, “Lately, I keep thinking about when I was alone in Westhaven, about those days when I was isolated and helpless. I know all of that is in the past, but whenever I think about it, I remember how he treated me back then.”
She was truly someone who held a grudge.
Some things seemed to be over, but at the same time, it was as if they had never passed at all.
It was fine when she didn’t think about it, but once the memories surfaced, she couldn’t forget them, nor could she ignore them.
