"It’s okay!" Lucy Todd said. "Don’t worry about me. I’ve already found a sales job and have an interview lined up."

David Hayes’s face darkened. "Sharon Sutton’s mother knows we’re together," he said.

Lucy Todd froze. "What? How did she find out?"

"I don’t know," David Hayes said. "She just came to my office looking for me. It was so humiliating!"

Lucy Todd asked, "Are you okay, then?"

"I’m fine," David Hayes said. "I’m not coming over for the next couple of days, otherwise she’ll just cause more trouble for me."

"Okay," Lucy Todd said. "You should go back and be with her. I’ll be fine. I’m more worried about you... Are you going to be in trouble at work? Do you think she’ll tell Anne Sutton about you? What will happen to your job? I’m so sorry, David. I’ve caused you so much trouble."

"It’s fine," David Hayes said. "She won’t dare say anything! If she does, Sharon Sutton will leave me, and we even have a child together! A person like her will always think of the child’s best interests."

’Thank God it’s just Mrs. Sutton who knows. If it had been Anne Sutton, she’d definitely come after me.’

...

That evening, David Hayes came home right on time.

Sharon Sutton was rather surprised to see him home on time. "No overtime today?"

"Nope," David Hayes said. "I brought you that cake you like."

After he spoke, he snuck a glance at Mrs. Sutton, who was cooking in the kitchen. Judging by Sharon’s expression, her mother probably hadn’t said anything about what happened today.

Sharon Sutton sat to the side, looking at the cake David Hayes had brought home. It was her favorite flavor.

’This was just what this man was like. Sometimes he made her furious, but at other times, he always managed to win her over with these small details.’

...

That evening, Nathan Fawcett had a video conference with Noah Linden.

They finished discussing business, and just as they were about to end the call, Noah Linden spoke up. "Oh, right, Nathan. There’s one more thing."

"What is it?" Seeing his serious expression, Nathan Fawcett gave him his full attention.

Noah Linden said, "It’s about David Hayes. There’s a woman named Lucy Todd he tried to get into the company, but I rejected her. He came looking for me today, and he seemed furious."

’...He’s angry? What’s he got to be angry about?’ The Fawcett Group didn’t allow just anyone to be brought in through the back door.

’The incident with Yvonne Evans had already caused a huge stir.’

’The nerve on that guy. He can’t even manage his own affairs, yet he has the audacity to try and pull someone into the company.’

’Besides, that name, Lucy Todd, sounded vaguely familiar.’

Hearing Nathan’s response, Noah Linden added, "He also said he’s going to complain to Ms. Sutton."

Nathan Fawcett said, "Don’t worry about him. Let him throw a fit for a few days."

"Mrs. Ford came over today looking for David Hayes. I heard she even slapped him. I’m not sure if it’s related to this."

"From the sound of it, it probably is," Nathan Fawcett said. "Since you’re there, keep a close eye on things. Anne would be very concerned about this."

Noah Linden replied, "Alright. I’ll let you know if anything comes up."

Nathan Fawcett nodded. "Alright, get some rest for now."

...

Anne Sutton walked over and stood behind Nathan Fawcett. Seeing him hang up, she asked, "Are you tired?"

She had brought him a glass of water.

Nathan Fawcett looked up at Anne Sutton. "I was on the phone with Noah, talking about Fawcett Group business. I’m not tired, it’s fine."

Anne Sutton said, "Let me rub your shoulders. They must be sore from sitting for so long."

She stood beside him and began to massage his shoulders.

Nathan Fawcett looked at her and asked warily, "Are you seeing someone else?"

Anne, who was in the middle of massaging his shoulders, paused when she heard him. "What? Why would you think that?"

Nathan Fawcett said, "It’s just... you’re suddenly being so nice to me. I’m not used to it."

"...So I’m not allowed to be a little nice to you on a whim, is that it?"

Anne Sutton couldn’t help but laugh. ’This guy...’

’So I’m not allowed to be nice to him!’

Nathan Fawcett took her hand and pulled her onto his lap. He wrapped his arms around her waist, looking at the woman in his embrace. "Is Ian asleep?"

"He is," Anne Sutton replied. "He just fell asleep."

"That’s great," Nathan Fawcett said. "Keeps that little rascal from bothering us all day."

Anne Sutton said, "Oh, stop it! He’s adorable! What kind of father are you, only finding him annoying? Do you still have to go sit with your grandfather tonight?"

"I’ll head over in a little while," Nathan Fawcett said. "I won’t be long. He’s been doing much better the last couple of days."

He looked at Anne Sutton and said, "Go on and get some sleep. Come on, I’ll tuck you in."

"Jeez, what are you talking about? What do you mean, ’tuck me in’?"

Nathan Fawcett swept her up into his arms, bridal style, carried her to the large bed, and laid her down.

He looked at her and lowered himself on top of her.

Anne Sutton looked up at the man above her. "This is what you call tucking me in?"

"I’m just going to lie with you for a bit. I’m not going to do anything."

He held her and kissed her, and they were wrapped up in each other for a while before Nathan Fawcett finally pulled back.

Remembering he had to go sit with his grandfather soon, he didn’t take things any further and stopped himself.

He looked at her. "Go to sleep."

Anne Sutton: "..."

She looked at the man, impressed by his self-control. She said, "You should go, then."

"I’ll go after you’ve fallen asleep."

"Now that you’ve said that, I’ll never be able to fall asleep." The two of them lay in bed, talking for a while.

Since Mrs. Sutton wasn’t home these days, Anne didn’t have to go back to her own place and had been staying here.

Once she was asleep, Nathan Fawcett got out of bed and went to check on his grandfather.

...

When he got there, he saw Anna Linden in the room, sitting with his grandfather. When she saw him come in, Anna Linden said, "You’re still awake?"

"What are you doing here?"

"I came to talk with your grandfather for a while."

Nathan Fawcett said, "I can take over. Don’t you have work tomorrow?"

Anna Linden replied, "What, and you don’t have work tomorrow?"

"I can go in late."

"You go on," Anna Linden said. "I’ll stay with him. I wanted to talk with him anyway."

Nathan Fawcett looked at his mother, and seeing that she was insistent, he left the room.

...

In the morning, Anne Sutton woke up and glanced at the man beside her. He was awake, staring intently at her as she slept.

Anne Sutton reached up to rub her face. "What are you staring at me for?"

"Because you’re beautiful to look at."

"..." Anne Sutton said, "Are you crazy? Who likes watching people sleep!"

’Who actually looks good while they’re sleeping?’

’She suspected Nathan Fawcett was just deliberately teasing her.’

Hearing her words, Nathan Fawcett just smiled. He looked at this silly woman, pulled her into his arms, and said, "It’s still early. You can sleep a little longer."

"What about your grandfather?"

"My mom stayed with him last night, so I didn’t go," Nathan Fawcett said. "I just woke up too. I came back to bed and you didn’t even notice? You heartless woman!"

"I was fast asleep, I didn’t notice," Anne Sutton said. "Weren’t you the one who insisted on waiting for me to fall asleep before you left? It’s not my fault I’m a sound sleeper, is it?"

"..."

The two talked for a little while longer before getting out of bed.

Lately, Lana Langley’s work had been going better and better. Every morning, she would have breakfast with her son at home before heading off to her job.
