Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune
Chapter 294: Coming to Pick Her Up in the Afternoon
Anne Sutton said, "How have you been feeling these past couple of days? I just came by to check on you."
She hadn’t visited for a couple of days and wasn’t sure how Lana Langley was doing.
Still, seeing her get hit by a car that day had left Anne a little worried.
Lana Langley said awkwardly, "I’m fine."
The last time they’d met, Anne had exposed her lies, which had deeply embarrassed her.
Anne looked at her. "Ryan Linden was the one who treated you that way, and he lost the house you were saving for your son. You don’t blame him?"
Hearing this, Lana Langley looked at Anne defensively. "Are you trying to drive a wedge between my husband and me again?"
"If you want to treasure a man like that, to make him your everything, I have nothing to say. I’m just curious what’s going through your head! How can you be bullied like this and not even be the slightest bit angry?"
"He’s good to me sometimes," Lana Langley said, trying to convince herself. "At least I’m the only one for him. He doesn’t fool around on the side!"
"But he hits you!" Anne said. "Have you forgotten? He was the one who pushed you into the middle of the road. If you’d been a little less lucky, you could have died."
As Anne hit a nerve, Lana Langley became incredibly defensive. "That’s enough, stop talking! Let me tell you something, Anne Sutton, no matter how wronged I feel, I don’t need you meddling in my affairs. You’re so damn annoying!"
After she spoke, she turned to Chubby. "Son, get this woman out of here! I don’t want to see her."
Hearing his mother, Chubby hurried over and shoved Anne out of the room.
Once outside, Vera Wells looked at her. "What happened?"
Anne threw up her hands. "You can’t reason with someone who’s hell-bent on their own destruction."
’If this is what Lana Langley wants, then let her suffer the consequences!’
Hearing Anne’s words, Vera’s lips curved into a slight smile. "Some people are just like that. You can’t possibly understand what they’re thinking."
Anne said, "I don’t know what’s gotten into me. Maybe I’m just too bored lately, but seeing her like this, I think I’m even angrier than she is."
’That feeling of being disappointed in someone for not living up to their potential... it’s just so frustrating.’
Anne went to eat with Vera.
Anne was surprised to hear Vera say she was returning to Westhaven next week. "You’re leaving so soon?"
Vera said, "I’ve been here for too long already! Once I go back this time, I won’t be returning for a while. The director says they’re short-staffed and wants me back. You’re not going to miss me, are you?"
Hearing her, Anne said, "Of course I’ll miss you. You’re the only friend I have."
Vera smiled. "We’ll get together again when you’re back in Westhaven."
Anne nodded.
After they finished eating, Anne returned to work. She was on clinic duty today.
She was busy all morning and still had a few appointments in the afternoon.
It wasn’t quite time for her shift to start yet. As she walked over, she saw Nathan Fawcett.
Anne was a little surprised to see him there. "What are you doing here?"
The nurses nearby were all secretly checking Nathan out. ’He’s so handsome!’
Noticing that everyone was staring at Nathan, Anne called him into her office.
Nathan followed her in and closed the door. "Why the generous invitation inside this time?"
Anne said, "Didn’t you notice everyone staring at you out there?"
"Really?" Nathan said. "They’re like that every time I come here. It’s not a big deal."
He was used to being the center of attention wherever he went.
Hearing this, Anne said, "That’s a bit of a humblebrag."
Nathan said, "Have you eaten? I brought you some food."
Anne said, "I ate in the cafeteria. Did you have nothing better to do than bring me food?"
"My mother asked me to come, so I figured I’d stop by and see you."
Hearing this, Anne raised an eyebrow and drew out her words. "So I was just an afterthought, huh?"
Hearing her, Nathan walked up to her and wrapped an arm around her waist. "Smart mouth. If I said I made a special trip just to see you, would that make you happy?"
Anne looked at the man. "You guess... Mph!"
She had barely gotten the word out before Nathan lowered his head and pressed a kiss to her lips.
Ever since coming to Veridia, Anne had kept her distance from Nathan.
Even now that they were living in the same room, they had never crossed that line.
His sudden kiss now sent a tremor through her heart.
’She silently cursed herself for being so weak!’
’It was just a kiss. Why was she acting like some girl who’d never seen a man before?’
Nathan was still kissing her, but he could tell her mind was elsewhere. "Thinking about someone else while you’re kissing me? I guess my technique isn’t good enough?"
"You have a technique?" Anne shot the man a look. "Are you really not aware of your own skill level?"
Her words made Nathan grit his teeth. "Then why don’t you tell me who does it better? Charles Prescott?"
Anne was left speechless at the mention of his name.
Nathan looked at her, seeing she was silent. "What is it?"
Anne said, "You’re just being a buzzkill. Why bring him up, of all people?"
Nathan said, "Well, besides him, has there been anyone else?"
Charles Prescott was the only one; they had been engaged for several years.
’Besides Charles Prescott, he couldn’t think of anyone else she would have been involved with.’
Listening to the man, Anne said, "There’s no one else. Only you. Satisfied?"
At her words, a flash of surprised delight crossed Nathan’s face, though he still found it hard to believe. "Really?"
Anne said, "You probably won’t believe me, but Charles Prescott never touched me when we were together. But it’s the truth."
Hearing this, Nathan smiled, his arm around her waist tightening slightly. "It seems he really didn’t know what was good for him."
"He wasn’t like you, unable to touch women!" Anne said. "He was never short on female company. I even suspected he might have caught some disease."
Nathan said, "Well, you don’t have to worry about that with me."
Hearing him, Anne said, "I have to get to work! Weren’t you going to find your mother?"
’Anna Linden had been busy with something these past few days. She was sometimes out of the hospital, and Anne hadn’t seen her at all for a couple of days.’
’She had no idea when she’d even gotten back.’
Nathan glanced at the time. "I’ll come pick you up this afternoon, then. Let’s go out for dinner."
Anne had started working right after arriving in Veridia and rarely went out.
’He had been busy too, but now that he had some free time, he wanted to take her out.’
’Nathan realized that without Anne by his side, he was just a work machine. Only when he was with her did he feel like he had a life.’
Anne asked, "We’re not eating at home?"
"We’ll eat out," Nathan said. "I’d like to take you on a date. I wonder if Ms. Sutton would be willing to give me that opportunity?"
His formal invitation made Anne feel a little awkward.
She looked at the man, thought for a moment, and nodded.
