Light Bringer: New World[LitRPG, Fantasy, a very crazy idea]
Chapter 54 - The First Century Aqueduct
The descent through the demolition breach demanded sixty feet of nylon climbing line and four steel carabiners hammered into basalt fissures.
Past the eighty-five-meter mark, the circular industrial masonry of Pipe Seven fell away, replaced by vertical walls of hand-dressed gray granite blocks bound with lead-poured joints entirely free of modern mortar.
The air in this deep shaft was freezing, carrying the scent of damp earth and ancient mineral brine, scored only by the distant drip of moisture from the ceiling.
Nicole went down first, touching the flagstones of the lower gallery with the soundless grace of someone landing on a felt carpet.
She raised a clenched right fist that very second.
"Hold right there," she warned in a dry whisper before Dante could set his boots down.
Maria dropped from the line right behind him, hand already locked onto the greatsword hilt across her back.
The girl in the black-scaled coat crouched against the first floor seam, drawing the right dagger from her belt. With the keen needle tip of the blade, she delicately lifted an oxidized wire running an inch above the flagstones, pinned to a brass anchor driven into the stone.
The wire traced the masonry corner up to a recess in the ceiling, where a three-pronged iron spear was seated within a spring-loaded recoil mechanism under four hundred pounds of mechanical tension.
"Old Legion recoil trap," Nicole severed the tripwire with a flick of her blade, catching the loose end to keep the wire from singing against the stone. "Dozens of these seeded through the garrison galleries. Walk with your eyes on the ceiling down here, and you catch an iron spear through the chest before spotting the first beast."
Dante touched the stone floor with his rubber boots, verifying the grounding grooves across his soles.
The expanse before them was a monumental aqueduct twenty-five feet wide and twenty feet high, cut down the center by a deep trench carrying still, dark water filmed in a sheen of cold mineral oil.
His interface updated their depth on his retina.

"First priority: establish a forward redoubt," Dante said quietly, unhooking the copper-chalk case from his belt. "We don't drop on the serpent hauling four supply rucksacks without a dry retreat vector."
Nicole pointed the tip of her dagger toward a solid bronze door set within an archway along the left wall, twenty paces from their descent line.
"That's the north gallery sluice control vault," she said, sheathing the knife. "Three-point mechanical handwheel deadbolt. Reinforced concrete roof, zero vents large enough for anything bigger than a rat."
Maria stepped up to the bronze door.
Planting both hands on the cast-iron spokes of the central wheel, she dug her heels into the granite with [Unshakable Stance] and torqued the metal with the full leverage of thirty-three Strength.
CREEEAK.
A century of rust yielded with a harsh metallic groan that echoed down the aqueduct. The three cylindrical bronze deadbolts slid back into their housings, and the heavy door swung open into a dry fifty-square-foot chamber floored in red hydraulic tile and lined with stripped iron benches devoid of operational machinery.
Dante stepped inside, drew a stick of copper-doped chalk, and traced a basic runic containment circle across the threshold.
"Floor is dry in here," Dante said, setting their two heavy supply packs in the corner of the bench. "The canvas packs stay locked inside. We advance with only combat gear, water, and Mana consumables."
Maria unclipped her load harness with an audible breath of relief, freeing her torso beneath the iron brigandine.
She drew her forty-pound greatsword, verified the quick-release catch on her harness, and looked at Nicole.
"Clear the approach," Maria ordered, her voice carrying its customary gravelly edge. "You said the route is choked with secondary nests."
Nicole nodded, unclipping her repeating crossbow from her thigh.
"The main sluice is infested with Condensation Worms," she explained, gesturing toward the dark water in the trench outside. "Blind six-foot abominations plated in cast lead, disc maws ringed with iron teeth. They feed on grease draining off the city boilers and swarm anything vibrating the water."
They filed out of the bronze vault, pulling the door shut until the latch seated without spinning the handwheel.
The advance down the aqueduct began with Nicole on point, moving along the dry flagstones flanking the trench in soundless strides.
Dante held his brass ring flaring a soft blue sphere of light inches above his right palm, illuminating granite walls draped in black moss and iron shoring trusses spanning the ceiling every thirty feet.
Fifty paces in, the water in the central trench began to churn.
A thick wake sliced the surface oil, followed by a wet suction hiss that resonated off the stone.
Three eyeless cylindrical heads surfaced, gaping circular jaws lined with counter-rotating concentric rows of serrated iron teeth grinding in a mechanical gnash.
[Entity: Condensation Worm (Greater Tier 2).]

[Level: 26.]
[Health Points: 340/340.]
[Property: Malleable Lead Carapace (+30% Piercing Damage Resistance).]
"Three on the forward line," Nicole reported without breaking stride.
She leveled her repeating crossbow with her right hand at the center worm.
THWIP. THWIP. THWIP.
Three steel bolts tipped in pure silver paste whistled from the magazine in under a second.
The bolts struck the worm squarely in the articulation seams between the lead plates of its skull, coring neural clusters with surgical precision that sent the beast thrashing across the water in violent spasms.
[-90 HP to target.]
[Effect applied: Partial Neural Paralysis.]
"Take them!" Nicole vaulted laterally, clearing the center corridor.
Maria didn't need asking twice.
Her heavy boots shook the granite flagstones as she charged. Vaulting straight into the eighteen-inch-deep sluice, she blasted dark water to either side with the impact of her iron boots.
[Skill Activated: [Seismic Rift - Tier 1].]
[Mana Cost: 15 MP.]
She drove the chisel point of her forty-pound blade straight into the stone bed of the trench.
The concussive shockwave born of thirty-three Strength and falling steel raced along the water in a straight sixteen-foot furrow, geysering a wall of liquid and stone shrapnel into the air.
The concussive wave struck the remaining two worms from below, rupturing their buoyancy bladders with muffled thuds. The monsters were hurled against the aqueduct walls, their lead carapaces buckled by the hydraulic displacement.
[-140 HP to targets.]
[Effect applied: Structural Mass Destabilization.]
Dante closed to the water's edge, right hand leveled through the brass ring.
[Skill Activated: [Rain of Ether Needles - Tier 1].]
[Mana Cost: 45 MP.]
Twenty needle-thin lances of azure light erupted from the quartz, shredding the channel steam and burying themselves into the soft tissue of the stunned beasts' open maws.
The integrated slow seized the grinding jaw muscles of both creatures against the stone floor.
Maria completed the maneuver with the cold efficiency of a slaughterhouse butcher.
Sweeping the greatsword up in a two-handed grip, she primed [Devastating Cleaver].
The broad blade cleaved down in two clean horizontal arcs, bisecting the cylindrical heads into dark meat and lead coils that sank into the oily sludge with dying gasps of vented air.
[-210 HP to targets.]
[Targets Eliminated: 2x Condensation Worm (Level 26).]
Nicole was already atop the third paralyzed worm.
Dropping from an overhead beam with twin daggers drawn, she drove the straight steel points through the exposed energy core between the monster's neck plates with two compact thrusts.
The beast ceased thrashing instantly.
[-250 HP to target (Critical Sneak Attack).]
[Target Eliminated: Condensation Worm (Level 26).]
The skirmish had concluded in under forty seconds.
The dark water of the trench settled, fouled by thick oil oozing from the three severed carcasses.
Maria dragged her blade from the water, wiping the slime off the steel against the collar of her boot with the bored detachment of someone finishing a chore.
She looked up at Nicole, who was sheathing her daggers with a flick of her wrists.
"You don't miss with that crossbow," Maria noted, her deep voice echoing off the ceiling.
"Spent four years hunting scavengers in the Second Continent sewer mains," Nicole replied, pulling a short blade to excise the mineral oil glands from the meat. "Miss down there, and you don't climb back up to tell the story."
Dante logged the combat telemetry.
[Experience Received: +620 shared EXP.]
[Dante Miller: Level 20 (1510/2200 EXP).]
[Maria: Level 21 (1550/3200 EXP).]
The experience density in this sector was nearly double that of the canyon constructs. Three more passes through this aqueduct would tip their progress toward the next level bracket before the close of day two.
They pressed down the main corridor for another twelve hundred feet, methodically clearing two smaller parasite nests with identical teamwork: Nicole marked weaknesses from range, Dante pinned the field with needle volleys, and Maria obliterated heavy plating in melee with her forty-pound blade.
At the terminus of the granite gallery, the aqueduct ended at a monumental thirty-foot archway choked by a cast-iron portcullis buckled inward.
Beyond the breach lay the Expansion Reservoir.
The chamber was a hollow cavern three hundred feet across and a hundred and twenty feet high, fed by dozens of colossal conduits cascading steaming runoff into a central lake of black sludge and tar sediment.
In the center of the pool rose an island of scrap assembled from wrecked locomotive chassis and twisted girders.
Coiled across that heap of dead metal, drinking the steady heat hissing from a fractured equalization boiler, slept the Armored Slag Serpent.
The horror measured over sixty-five feet in length, thick as a fifty-gallon oil drum.
Its entire body was encased in overlapping plates of black ferrite fused with scales of oxidized naval armor, gleaming with an oily film under the hot steam. Its triangular skull spanned six feet across, iron jaws crowded with curved eighteen-inch fangs resting limp across a scrap conveyor, sleeping under the steady hiss of gas.
[Primary Target: Armored Slag Serpent (Lesser Tier 3).]
[Level: 28.]
[Health Points: 850/850.]
Behind the scrap island, set into the granite rear wall of the cavern, stood the lead-shielded blast door of the military vault, bearing the raised relief of the Fourth Division insignia.
Nicole halted at the ruined portcullis, amber eyes fixed on the armored door.
"She's there," Nicole whispered, her voice barely audible over the steam. "And the vault is intact."
Maria evaluated the eight hundred and fifty hit points on the display, then glanced down at the broad flat of her greatsword.
"That snake's plating is thicker than the boiler colossus, Dante," she murmured, never taking her eyes off the sleeping titan.
"Eight hundred and fifty hit points at Level 28," Dante weighed the variables. "We do not engage this beast on stamina spent from a four-hour trudge through mud. We fall back to the bronze vault, eat a hot meal, sleep a full six-hour rotation, and crack this hull tomorrow morning with full Mana and rested arms."
Nicole watched the serpent for three more seconds, then turned her shoulders back toward the granite corridor.
"The kid is right," Nicole agreed, her voice flat with professional patience. "That beast isn't leaving that warm boiler today. We mount watch in the control room."
They retraced their steps with deliberate care, slipping back through the cleared gallery toward the security of the bronze wheel-lock door.
The opening phase of their subterranean run was complete.
The rear nests were eradicated, their escape vector was secured, and the primary target sat pinned in the heart of this buried empire, waiting for the iron blade that would fall upon its carapace the moment their next rest cycle closed.
