Midnight arrived with a sharp plunge in temperature.

Express 404 had crested the second shelf of the plain, an expanse known among miners as the Dry Slag Plateau, where the altitude turned the wind whistling through the tarp seams into razors of thin ice.

Across the gondola car, the four fellow travelers slept the leaden sleep of the exhausted.

Old Jabor lay curled on his side, his sheepskin coat pulled high over his ears, breathing in a calmer cadence thanks to the warmth of the wool blankets. Beside him, Cida rested her head against a tool sack, keeping an arm draped over her father's chest to register any sudden fits of coughing. The two sisters, Tali and Vana, shared the shawl in the corner against the steel wall, huddled tight against each other to trap their body heat.

The steady thrum over sleeper joints held the car in a mechanical trance: clack-clack, clack-clack, clack-clack.

Dante pulled his heat-resistant leather vest snug across his chest, tucking the cotton blanket over his legs. He was not tired. The twelve-hour rest back inside the canyon boiler had fully restored his stamina, and his twenty-six Wisdom kept his mind alert, analyzing the logistics of the journey with his customary detachment.

Maria sat beside him, resting her back against the gondola's iron plate, long legs stretched out over the bed of crushed ore.

She nudged his shoulder lightly with her elbow, careful to make no sound.

"Open your menu," she whispered, keeping her voice low so as not to wake the girls in the corner. "We're stuck eighteen days in this tin box with nothing to smash. We have time to study these branches properly."

Dante gave a single nod of agreement.

He summoned his mental interface, toggling the low-emission display setting that dimmed the silver screen to a muted gleam, visible only to his own retinas and through their shared link channel.

[Binding Channel: Stealth Mode Activated.]

[Tab 05: Skill Tree Shared Analysis.]

The projection of glowing nodes unfolded before them, hovering inches above the deck boards.

Maria called up her own tree, locking onto branch number one, the very path she had entirely dismissed while holed up in the canyon boiler: Unshakable Bastion.

"I was stupid down there," she started, speaking in the matter-of-fact tone of a mechanic examining a broken engine part on a bench. "Burned points on [Devastating Cleaver] and [Seismic Rift] thinking all I had to do was swing harder. But that shrapnel grenade tore up my leg and took six hours to seal. And the automaton's arc torch burned my arm before I could even bring my edge down on it."

She tapped a fingernail against a circular node on the second tier of the defensive branch, marked with an icon of a riveted iron cuirass.

[Passive Skill: [Reactive Impact Carapace - Tier 1].]

[Requirements: Constitution 30, Level 20.]

[Unlock Cost: 2 SP.]

[Effect: Converts 20% of incoming physical damage from concussive or piercing strikes into kinetic absorption charge. When accumulated absorption reaches 50 points, the next attack with a heavy weapon discharges a repulsion shockwave that knocks back enemies up to ten feet.]

"Look at this," Maria leaned closer to the screen. "That isn't just defense. It's defense that feeds back into offense. If a monster slams my armor with a hammer, not only do I eat the blow, I turn the momentum of its own strike into fuel for my next swing."

"The synergy is optimal," Dante analyzed the numbers with his thirty-four Intelligence. "At thirty-two Constitution, your passive mitigation already shaves down baseline damage. [Reactive Impact Carapace] provides a safety net against crowd swarms. If three lesser constructs flank you, their combined strikes trigger the shockwave and clear room for you to swing the greatsword."

"Then there's this one right below it," she dragged the node chain down to a thick-bordered square.

[Active Skill: [Liquid Lead Stance - Tier 1].]

[Activation Cost: 10 MP.]

[Duration: 8 seconds.]

[Effect: Increases resistance to fire, steam, and acid damage by 35%. Reduces forced knockback from impacts or explosions to zero.]

"This would've stopped that arc burn on my forearm at the turntable," she tapped her knuckles against her thigh. "I can't just be a battering ram that sprints forward, Dante. Inside the Black Smelter I realized that if a machine three times my mass comes crashing down, I have to turn into a concrete wall that refuses to give an inch. If my line breaks, the beast tramples me and runs straight into you."

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

Dante looked at the six-foot-three girl beside him.

There was a tactical maturity taking root in her that had not existed in the ten-year-old Maria, who used to drag rusty scrap from heaps just to batter tin cans. The near-fatal brush with the Black Boiler Colossus and the sniper clash on the crane had taught her the vital economy of poise and containment.

"You're right," Dante conceded, his voice carrying quiet respect. "I need to adjust my own progression path as well."

He pulled his display to the center of their shared link, expanding the branches of Ether Projection.

"I have a glaring vulnerability in my offensive kit," Dante explained, pointing to the solitary glyph for [Aether Dart]. "The dart is lethal. The range scaling with thirty-four Intelligence is absurd, as we proved on the crane. But it's a single-target, straight-line lance that relies on surgical accuracy against a one-inch seam. If an enemy fields a tower shield or if we get swarmed in open terrain, one bolt every three seconds won't anchor our flanks."

"You need a spread," Maria observed, recalling the cog hounds from day five of the hunt. "Something that perforates multiple targets simultaneously."

Dante opened the node directly beneath [Piercing Aether Dart].

[Active Skill: [Rain of Ether Needles - Tier 1].]

[Requirements: Intelligence 32, Level 20.]

[Activation Cost: 45 MP.]

[Effect: Splits a single charge of Mana into twenty fine needles of compressed ether, discharged across a sixty-degree cone with a range of up to sixty feet. Each needle inflicts light piercing damage and applies a 10% slow to mechanical hinges or muscular joints of struck targets for 5 seconds.]

"This solves our crowd control dilemma," Dante indicated the technical specs. "Twenty simultaneous projectiles carrying an integrated slow. If a pack of hounds tries to sweep around our perimeter to evade your blade, I blanket the advance cone. The needles pin their drive joints, and you step in to sweep with wide cleaves."

"What about heavy long-range punch?" she asked. "What if another sniper sets up a thousand feet away on a gantry?"

Dante dropped his eyes to a node pulsing deep indigo, nearly violet, at the terminus of the Spatial Distortion branch.

[Active Skill: [Vacuum Rupture Lance - Tier 1].]

[Requirements: Intelligence 34, Wisdom 25, Level 20.]

[Activation Cost: 110 MP.]

[Cast Time: 1.5 seconds.]

[Effect: Compresses a massive payload of pure ether into a continuous piercing spear that warps air density along its path. Bypasses 40% of cast-iron or stone armor plating and delivers concentrated kinetic shock damage at the point of impact.]

Dante studied the resource footprint calmly.

"One hundred and ten Mana," he said. "Almost a quarter of my total pool of five hundred and ten. But with the armor penetration it delivers, it would punch clean through the crane's ventilation plate and into that sniper's chest, without needing to aim for his optic."

Maria evaluated Dante's figures, then reviewed her own tree.

"We don't have the points right now," she noted, letting out a measured breath. "We burned all five Level 20 points back inside the boiler."

"We earn additional points at levels twenty-two and twenty-four," Dante dismissed the projection, returning to the core dashboard. "The mission briefing for the Capital quest confirms that once we breach the Central Bastion and clear the route, the system unlocks Tier Three specialization. That milestone traditionally awards a bonus pool of three or four skill points."

"Then the build is set," Maria folded her arms over her brigandine, feeling the chill of the plate through her shirt. "My next points go straight into [Reactive Impact Carapace] and [Liquid Lead Stance]. I become the fortress that eats kinetic shock without flinching."

"And mine go to [Rain of Ether Needles] and [Vacuum Rupture Lance]," Dante concluded. "I become the artillery clearing the field before you have to spend your breath."

They closed both windows simultaneously.

The pale silver gleam dissolved, plunging the gondola car back into the dark violet chill of the plateau night.

The air remained bitter, yet the feeling inside their chests was one of hardened alignment. They were no longer kids winging it with scrap iron salvaged from junkyards or tossing unrefined arcane sparks without knowing where the recoil would land. They possessed a structured combat doctrine, forged by the parameters of their classes and tempered through seven years of shared survival.

Maria stretched her arms toward the rafters, feeling her shoulder blades pop under her tank top.

"Hey, Dante," she called in a murmur, gazing up at the gap in the tarp where coal grit streamed against the wind.

"What?"

"You think that sniper... Miro... made it off that tower alive?"

Dante looked into the dark of the car for two seconds before speaking.

"He had chitin talons on his feet and spent four months mapping every strut in that canyon. Someone who lived through laboratory vivisections at age seven and mastered a heavy rifle on his own doesn't die climbing down an iron ladder."

"Yeah," she offered a faint, dry smile in the dark. "He was as stubborn as we are."

"Almost as stubborn as you," Dante corrected with dry sarcasm. "Nobody in the entirety of Hell matches your stubbornness when you want dried beef in freezing weather."

Maria nudged his arm with her shoulder, hard enough to bump his head lightly against the cargo crate frame.

"Shut up and go to sleep, bighead. We hit the first water stop at dawn, and I want to see if this train has any food that doesn't come out of a tin."

Dante arranged the blanket over his shoulders, closed his eyes, and rested his head against the corner of the iron plate.

The cadence of iron wheels over rail joints pounded on into the night of the First Great Continent: clack-clack, clack-clack, clack-clack.

The opening leg of their twenty-six-hundred-mile transit was being consumed yard by yard beneath the raw pressure of the Legion steam boilers, and they had all the time in the world to wait for the end of the line.
