Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 99: Fifty-One Percent

  • Next Chapter

Nobody disputed the dates. The court could survive an accusation. It had more trouble surviving a timeline.

The coming vote no longer divided cleanly into allies and enemies. One House rejected property status and still supported extraction. Another accepted that the execution statute was retroactive but considered Jace too dangerous to leave uncontained. Rook opposed civilian collateral while accepting temporary risk review. Jace had changed the legal question without changing everyone's fear of him. Nobody in the chamber looked relieved. The property arguments were bleeding out, but the fear underneath them had not moved.

John read the final extraction petition aloud before allowing the vote. That forced every House to hear what remained after the property and execution theories weakened: Jace was dangerous because he could break rules, survive classifications, and inspire structures the registry could not predict.

For the first time, the case against him was not pretending to be about ownership. It was about risk. Jace hated it more because some of it was true.

He had proved several accusations false and still failed to prove that freedom from those accusations made him safe.

CLAUSE CHRONOLOGY REVIEW

Sunchain Preservation Code:

Conquest precedes statute by 31 cycles.

House Noble Territorial Law:

Seizure precedes statute by 117 cycles.

Crownline Termination Statute:

Campaign precedes statute by 42 cycles.

Additional challenged precedents: 9.

John Mercer read each result aloud. His voice stayed level until the fourth. Then he stopped. Elizabeth Ardent took over.

"Authentication remains valid."

Penelope looked at her.

"You knew the records were real."

"Yes."

"You never checked whether the law came first."

Elizabeth's eyes remained on the chronology.

"It was not relevant to authentication."

"Is it relevant now?"

Long silence.

"Yes."

It cost her something to say it.

HOUSE ARDENT FACTION POSITION

Toward Jace:

-24 -> -9.

Toward Current Trial Record:

SUPPORT -> DISPUTED.

John looked at Jace.

"You may challenge precedent legitimacy."

A new function opened.

The old statutes changed color. The records were not false. They were worse.

VALID RECORD / INVALID RETROACTIVE JUSTIFICATION.

Jace selected the Sunchain code.

RULE FRACTURE

Target:

Retroactive Property Presumption.

Cost:

Legal Evidence 6.

Physical Cost: NONE within Trial Instance.

"Nice court perk."

Olivia looked at him.

"Use it before they notice."

He did.

Sunchain Claim Integrity: 91% -> 54%.

Property Classification: FRACTURED.

Recovery Interest: REMAINS.

Charlotte looked at the change. For the first time, her House could argue preservation without automatically owning the person being preserved. She did not smile.

"Again," she said.

Jace fractured House Noble's retroactive ownership presumption.

Palace Claim Integrity: 94% -> 48%.

House Noble Property Right: DISPUTED.

Historical Occupation: VERIFIED.

Ownership Continuity: BROKEN.

Seraphina closed her eyes. Then the military statute.

Execution Petition: 100% -> 62%.

Automatic illegality presumption: DESTROYED.

More false claims collapsed.

The verdict meter moved.

ADVERSE JUDGMENT: 43% -> 35%.

DISMISSAL: 22% -> 44%.

UNDECLARED: 21%.

Jace thought, briefly, that the numbers might actually matter. Then the Houses changed the question. A new filing entered.

CROWNLINE RISK PETITION

Argument:

Even if historical ownership claims are defective, current claimant constitutes an uncontained Crownline hazard.

Evidence:

Level 999 quarantine.

Hostile title compatibility.

Crown Tax evasion.

Rule Fracture capability.

Authority: 17.

Unregistered protected network.

Requested Remedy:

LIVE EXTRACTION FOR RISK ASSESSMENT.

Not property.

Not execution.

Procedure.

Olivia swore.

John closed his eyes.

"Admissible."

Jace looked at him.

"You know what that is."

"Yes."

"Then deny it."

"I do not possess discretionary exclusion over authenticated risk petitions."

"There it is again."

John opened his eyes. He did not defend himself. The votes began.

House Velorum: Extraction.

House Noble: Extraction.

Military Bloc: Extraction.

Two smaller Houses: Dismissal.

Ardent abstained.

Rook rejected execution but accepted temporary extraction review. Alexander looked furious at his own panel.

"It is not execution."

"Strong slogan."

"It matters."

"To you."

Alexander's mouth thinned.

"Yes."

Charlotte's House voted extraction. Charlotte did not. Her individual dissent appeared beneath the House seal.

SUNCHAIN HOUSE VOTE: EXTRACTION.

CHARLOTTE SUNCHAIN: DISSENT RECORDED.

House authority supersedes representative dissent.

The meter climbed. 41%. 44%. 47%. Penelope stood beside Elizabeth.

"Vote."

Elizabeth stared at the timeline Jace had exposed.

"If Ardent votes dismissal, we lose access to the extracted record."

Penelope's expression hardened.

"So that's the price?"

"It's the reality."

"Your reality."

Elizabeth looked at her daughter. Then at the three Registry Evidence items the court had just created because Jace proved its history was backward. House Ardent voted abstain. Not enough. 49%. John Mercer held the final adjudicator block. Not a House vote. A procedural confirmation. The System opened it for him.

THRESHOLD REACHED IF CONFIRMED:

51%.

John's hand hovered over the panel. Jace watched him. So did everyone else.

"You don't have to like the law," Jace said.

John looked up. Jace gave him a tired smile.

"Think somebody told me that."

John's hand lowered. He did not smile back.

"I did."

"Still believe it?"

John looked at the Safe Zone through the court link. At civilians standing beneath a barrier the trial was legally allowed to weaken. Then he touched CONFIRM.

ADVERSE JUDGMENT: 49% -> 51%.

HOUSE TRIAL VERDICT

GUILTY OF UNCONTAINED CROWNLINE RISK.

Property claims: PARTIALLY DISMISSED.

Execution petitions: DENIED.

Live Extraction: AUTHORIZED.

Trial rewards retained.

Extraction debuff applied.
