Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 97: House Trial
The Dyson Ring entered Manhattan through the ceiling. No portal opened. The Spire simply stopped agreeing that the sky was above it. Gold light spread across the throne chamber. For one nauseating instant Jace saw New York through one direction and an impossible ring wrapped around a dying star through the other. Then the courtroom settled between them.
The courtroom had its own economy of attention. A claim gained weight when another House acknowledged it, lost weight when provenance failed, and could remain dangerous even after its factual basis weakened if enough institutions depended on the result. Olivia spent the opening minutes mapping alliances instead of arguments.
Olivia drew a second line on her notes for people whose legal position could change during the hearing. Charlotte. Alexander. Elizabeth. Eleanor. Jace understood the reason. A courtroom full of permanent enemies was simple. A courtroom full of competing interests was dangerous in a more useful way.
John Mercer opened with procedure that irritated every major House equally. No private evidence. No retroactive exhibits without provenance. No direct penalties against civilian witnesses without a separate finding. He could not remove the collateral authorization, but he could force every attempt to use it into the visible record.
Elizabeth Ardent approved of that for reasons Jace did not trust yet. She cared less about fairness than whether the record could be falsified cleanly. Penelope cared about what the record proved. Her mother cared that it remained the record. The distinction gave House Ardent two different kinds of danger.
Jace watched her mark Sunchain, Noble, Rook, Ardent, and the smaller seals on paper. A physical fight had positions and ranges. This one had votes, procedural standing, and people who could dislike him while still needing the same precedent. Treating every House as one enemy would lose before the first objection.

Jace looked at the collateral line.
"Already hate court."
Olivia stood beside Avery's evidence table.
"You've been in court for twenty minutes."
"Long twenty minutes."
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
A man appeared at the center of the Ring chamber. John Mercer wore dark robes without House colors. His hair was white at the temples. He looked older than Eleanor and far more tired. He did not look at Jace first. He looked at Manhattan, at the patched north barrier, and at the stretch of pavement where Benjamin had died. Then he looked down at the case.
CHIEF ADJUDICATOR
John Mercer.
Neutrality Status: CERTIFIED.
Conclave Authority: HIGH.
Historical Law Access: FULL.
Verdict Override: NONE.
Collateral Authorization: LIMITED.
John's eyes stayed on the last field.
"Remove civilian collateral."
The System answered before anyone else could.
REQUEST DENIED.
Collateral is attached to contested territorial authority.
John's mouth tightened. Tiny movement. Real movement.
"Noted."
A second woman appeared beside Penelope. Elizabeth Ardent looked like the older version of an argument Penelope had not finished having.
HOUSE ARDENT
Representative: Elizabeth Ardent.
Function: Records-House Matriarch.
Trial Role: Provenance Director.
Record Access: EXTENSIVE.
Faction Position toward Jace: OPPORTUNISTIC / NEGATIVE.
Penelope did not greet her. Elizabeth glanced at Avery's paper ledgers.
"Those are the human records?"
"Yes," Penelope said.
"You vouched for them?"
"For the verified portions."
"Good."
Penelope frowned. Elizabeth's gaze remained on the papers.
"False records are more dangerous than hostile records."
That was not morality. Jace could work with it. The evidence inventory opened.

John raised one hand.
"The Conclave recognizes the defendant's current personhood pending verdict."
Jace looked at Olivia.
"Generous."
"Don't antagonize the judge."
"He set the bar underground."
John heard him.
"I did not write the bar."
"Starting to notice that's popular."
John met his eyes.
"No one in this chamber is required to like the law."
"Just obey it?"
"Until law is successfully challenged, yes."
At least he said it clean. The first House seal opened. Sunchain. Charlotte appeared beneath it. Her expression changed when the filing displayed.
HOUSE SUNCHAIN CLAIM
Target: Jace.
Basis:
Recoverable Crownline property.
Preservation necessity.
Unauthorized separation from recognized recovery architecture.
Requested Remedy:
Live recovery.
Bloodline stabilization.
Custodial transfer.
Charlotte's jaw hardened.
"I object to the word property."
The House seal answered.
Objection conflicts with standing House charter.
Claim remains valid.
Charlotte looked at John.
"Strike it."
"I cannot alter a claimant's authenticated filing."
"So my House can speak through me while refusing what I say."
"Yes."
She went very still. House Noble filed next.
PALACE RESTITUTION CLAIM
Target:
Forbidden Palace.
Basis:
Prior registered ownership.
Requested Remedy:
Return structure and all derivative authority.
Seraphina's old claim record illuminated on Avery's table. Jace felt the Free Accord tighten. Then the martial Houses filed together.
SUCCESSION ENFORCEMENT PETITIONS
Requested Remedies:
Formal combat execution rights.
Bloodline termination if recovery fails.
Territory seizure authorization.
Collateral shield suspension.
Alexander Rook's projection appeared among them. He read the final request.
"No."
One House seal turned toward him. Alexander folded his arms.
"I challenged the man. I did not challenge the civilians under his roof."
Faction Standing Shift:
House Rook toward Jace: -31 -> -19.
Military Bloc Cohesion: 100% -> 91%.
Small movement.
Expensive movement.
The claimant board filled the chamber. 19 claims. Recovery. Restitution. Execution. Custody. Inheritance. Jace looked at the neat seals arranged around his name. Nobody had invaded Earth. Nobody had fired.
Every possible form of violence had simply applied for permission first. John Mercer lowered his hand.
"All primary claims are entered."
Three red lines appeared.
HOUSE SUNCHAIN:
Jace claimed as recoverable bloodline property.
HOUSE NOBLE:
Forbidden Palace claimed as inherited estate.
MILITARY BLOC:
Execution rights requested.
John looked at Jace across two worlds.
"Defense may begin."
