Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 95: Seraphina's Lie

  • Next Chapter

The House Trial did not begin with a judge. It began with discovery. White text spread across the Spire wall while people were still carrying blankets back into the north block.

Seraphina did not defend the omission by saying she had meant well. That would have been easy and partly true. She had withheld a material risk because she feared Jace would make a choice she could not control. The Free Accord did not care that fear came from love, survival, or House conditioning. It measured the missing disclosure.

Jace did not ask Seraphina whether she had lied because the answer was more complicated than the useful question. She had told many true things and hidden one fact that would have changed his decision. The Accord treated omission as an action because voluntary agreement depended on what both people were actually allowed to know.

PRETRIAL DISCLOSURE

Case: CROWNLINE ZERO / THE GLITCH KING

Required Evidence Release:

Prior territorial claims.

Bloodline-linked structures.

Succession preparations.

Known claimant traps.

Material omissions between recognized parties.

Seraphina stopped walking. Jace noticed because everybody else kept moving. Avery carried ledgers past them. Liam was arguing with James about the north barrier. Somewhere behind the medical curtains, Harold was complaining about coffee again. Seraphina stood still.

"What?"

She looked at the final line.

"Nothing."

Jace read it again.

"Strong nothing."

The disclosure opened.

HOUSE NOBLE

Prior Registered Claimant:

Seraphina Noble.

Structure:

FORBIDDEN PALACE.

Original Purpose:

Restricted Crownline detection.

Secondary Purpose:

Containment.

Tertiary Purpose:

Succession suppression.

Jace looked at her. Seraphina did not look back.

Jace felt the Accord between them tighten. Not break. That would have been easier. Three House projections appeared inside the Spire. The first woman looked enough like Seraphina that Jace knew before the panel gave him a name.

ISABELLA NOBLE

Relationship: Older Sister.

House Function: Enforcement.

Faction Alignment: House Noble.

The man beside her was Henry Noble, Seraphina's father and House patriarch. The third was Evelyn Noble. Her mother. Evelyn saw Seraphina and forgot Jace existed.

"You survived."

Seraphina's face went hard.

"You knew I would."

"No."

The answer hurt more than reassurance would have. Isabella spoke next.

"We knew the Palace would protect its registered substitute until the true Crownline signature appeared."

Jace looked at Seraphina.

"Registered substitute."

She finally met his eyes.

"I knew the Palace was waiting for someone."

"Someone like me."

"Yes."

The Accord pulsed. Jace opened Breach Sight.

MATERIAL OMISSION

Known by Seraphina before Free Accord formation:

Forbidden Palace was not merely inherited territory.

Palace contained Crownline detection architecture.

A compatible Crownline claimant could trigger dormant functions.

Unknown to Seraphina:

Candidate identity.

Arrival date.

Level.

Exact containment response.

Known Risk Withheld: MATERIAL.

Jace closed the panel.

"You knew when we made the Accord."

"Yes."

Jace barely heard the rest of the record. Her father had built the trap and her House had defended it, but Seraphina had known when she stood across from him and agreed that neither of them would own, command, or trap the other.

"You could've told me."

"I should have."

Henry stepped forward.

"No."

Seraphina turned. Her father looked at her with the weary certainty of a man who had mistaken obedience for wisdom so many times that the difference had become insulting.

"You were forbidden from disclosing House succession architecture."

"I am not asking what I was forbidden to do."

"You were protecting the family."

"I was protecting myself."

That silenced him. Seraphina looked back at Jace.

"If I told you what the throne was, you might have removed me from the Palace."

"Probably."

"I thought so."

"So you decided for me."

"Yes."

No excuse followed. The Accord changed.

FREE ACCORD

Integrity: 54% -> 37%.

Reason:

Material truth withheld during voluntary formation.

Ownership Status: NONE.

Command Hierarchy: NONE.

Automatic Termination: NO.

Either Party May Revoke: YES.

Seraphina Faction Status:

House Noble: CONTESTED.

Free Accord: ACTIVE / DAMAGED.

Glitch King Territory: VOLUNTARY ALLY.

Jace stared at thirty-seven percent. Seraphina did not ask him to keep it. She left the damaged Accord where it was and waited. Isabella watched her sister with an expression Jace could not read.

Then Evelyn said, "We did what kept you alive."

Seraphina turned toward her mother.

"You put me on a throne built to catch someone else."

"We gave you status. Protection. A claim no lesser House could challenge."

"You gave me a chair with a person-shaped trigger underneath it."

Evelyn's eyes filled. Her voice stayed controlled.

"Would you rather we had left you with nothing?"

Seraphina looked around the Safe Zone. At people sleeping beneath patched barriers. At volunteers carrying steel without contracts. At a dead man's name written into Avery's ledger because a camera and a piece of paper had preserved more of him than the Crown Tax had.

"I don't know anymore."

Isabella flinched. It was small. Jace saw it anyway.

"You escorted her to the throne," he said.

Isabella faced him.

"Yes."

"Did you know?"

"I knew more than she did."

Seraphina went still. Isabella's projection opened an archived House order.

PALACE SUCCESSION CONTINGENCY

Registered Substitute: Seraphina Noble.

Function:

Occupy dormant throne.

Maintain noble control layer.

Expose unregistered Crownline claimant upon entry.

If compatible claimant manifests:

Route Crownline signature through substitute.

Suppress claimant if possible.

If suppression fails:

Substitute becomes containment anchor.

Seraphina read the last line twice. Her voice came out low.

"You knew that part?"

Isabella went rigid.

"Yes."

"And you put me there."

"I carried you to the throne myself."

"Why?"

Isabella looked away. Not at Henry. Not at Evelyn. At the floor of a city she had never visited.

"Because Father said someone had to carry the burden."

The Spire recognized the record.

PRETRIAL EVIDENCE ADDED

Item:

Palace Succession Contingency.

Classification:

House-authenticated.

Relevance:

Crownline detection.

Prior claimant authority.

Material omission.

Seraphina's hand closed slowly at her side. Jace had spent months learning that cages rarely called themselves cages. Seraphina had apparently grown up in one that called itself inheritance. The final line of the old House order appeared.

SUBSTITUTE PURPOSE:

Expose or suppress the true heir.
