Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 92: Title Recognized
The north block stayed black long after the dust settled. Emily filmed the darkness. She did not film Benjamin's body. Brooklyn had asked her not to. Instead, Emily stood where the blue shield used to meet the pavement and read his name into the camera.
The restoration effort became the first time the Safe Zone looked like a faction instead of a crowd. Teams had habits now. James's crews marked braces. Emma's volunteers carried red tape for medical routes. Madison's people knew which doors held food. Liam could ask for an anchor line without explaining what one was. None of that belonged to Jace, which was exactly why it survived his absence from each task.
Liam also started a repair log with names instead of roles. Whoever changed a brace signed the sheet. If the barrier failed later, they would know who to ask what happened instead of blaming the nearest title.
The four people who had refused the anchor request still received food, medical priority, and barrier coverage. Emily checked all four names against Madison's ration sheet, Emma's medical queue, and Liam's barrier roster. None had lost a benefit for refusing. Emily marked the check beside each name before returning to Benjamin's recording.
"Benjamin Ortiz. Volunteer. Sanitation crew, supply runner, construction crew, boundary support."
She looked at the black street.
"He died holding a gate open after the Crown removed protection from this block."
The System produced its own version above her shoulder.
TERRITORY FAILURE RECORD
Block Loss: 1.
Cause: Insufficient claimant compliance.
Corrective Action:
Register Subjects.
Emily turned the camera until both records shared the frame.
"Keep both," she said.
Liam Carter came through the dark boundary carrying a cable from the Anchor Room.
"Physical braces are intact on the south half. We can rebuild the shield if we get power there."
Olivia followed with three sheets from Avery's ledger.
"Power isn't the whole problem. Crown Tax attaches to Jace because the territory treats every protected person as downstream from one claimant."
Jace sat on the edge of the stretcher now. Emma had stopped arguing because threats lose prestige when repeated too often.
"Free Claims aren't downstream."
Olivia nodded.
"Exactly."
The fourteen pale lines returned behind his vision.
FREE CLAIM NETWORK
Active Claims: 14.
Current State: Restricted by CROWN review.
Ownership: 0.
Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
Independent consent roots: 14.
Emergency synchronization available.
Requirement:
Each protected participant must independently approve network use.
Jace opened the request. No mass accept button appeared. Good. Fourteen separate prompts went out.
EMERGENCY NETWORK PARTICIPATION
Purpose:
Restore failed Safe Zone block.
Potential Costs:
Charge routing.
Claim strain.
Temporary identity resonance.
Ownership Transfer: NONE.
Command Authority: NONE.
Withdrawal: AVAILABLE DURING EVENT.
Responses returned.
YES.
YES.
NO.
YES.
WAIT.
YES.
More followed.
Eleven accepted.
One refused.
Two asked for more information.
Jace excluded all three.
NETWORK PARTICIPANTS: 11/14.
System Recommendation:
Require full claimant compliance.
He closed it. Liam dragged the Anchor cable into the dead block. Emily lowered her camera.
"Eleven enough?"
"Find out."
The resource map opened.
ILLEGAL RESTORATION ROUTES
Free Claim Nodes: 11.
Transit Charge Well A: 86 available environmental Charge.
Community Anchor Bonus: 13%.
Volunteer Structural Anchors: 47 active.
Primary Anchor: 1/4.
Crown Tax Compliance: 0%.
Legal Restoration Route: NONE.
Breach Sight added another line.
ILLEGAL COMPOSITE ROUTE: POSSIBLE.
Olivia saw it.
"The Crown Tax is charging one owner."
"We don't have one."
"The territory still tells the tax office you are."
"Then stop sending the bill through me."
Jace linked the eleven Free Claims to the volunteer anchor network. The System fought him immediately.
NETWORK SYNCHRONIZATION
11 independent claims detected.
No central subject registry.
No shared obedience root.
No enforceable contribution requirement.
Network Stability: 17%.
Recommended Fix:
Appoint claimant as central authority.
Jace selected DECLINE.
Network Stability: 17% -> 14%.
Liam looked at the number.
"That went the wrong direction."
"Familiar."
Emily turned the camera toward the volunteers holding the physical anchor points. James's crews. Nurses. Food workers. People with no title and no registered function.
"Ask them."
Jace looked at her.
"They're already working."
"Working isn't consent to become infrastructure."
That shut him up. Olivia gave Emily a small nod. Liam opened the volunteer prompt.
COMMUNITY ANCHOR PARTICIPATION
Purpose: Restore North Block.
Contribution: Physical structure support / voluntary Charge routing if available.
Property Credit: NONE.
Future Labor Obligation: NONE.
Withdrawal: IMMEDIATE.
Accept?
Forty-seven prompts.
Forty-three yes.
Four no.
No one was removed from shelter priority.
NETWORK STABILITY: 14% -> 32%.
Emily kept the camera on the four refusals too. The Charge well connected. 86 environmental Charge entered eleven Free Claim routes and forty-three volunteer anchors. No single line carried enough to be taxed as territorial subject yield.
CROWN TAX ROUTING ERROR
Expected payer hierarchy:
Claimant -> Subjects -> Dependents.
Observed structure:
Claimant.
Independent protected persons.
Independent contributors.
Environmental source.
No valid collection tree.
Tax collection efficiency: 100% -> 61%.
[HIDDEN QUEST]
RESTORE THE DARK BLOCK WITHOUT SUBJECT REGISTRATION.
Progress: 43%.
North Block Barrier: 0% -> 8%.
The street glowed blue at ankle height. Emily's voice caught. She stopped talking. The light climbed. 12%. 17%. Twenty-three. Benjamin's bent gate appeared under the shield again. Emily lowered the camera. For several seconds, she simply looked at it.
Then she raised the camera and filmed the names of the people holding the network together. Not Jace. The people. The System processed the discrepancy.
