Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 91: The First Block Goes Dark

  • Next Chapter

By the time twelve people had volunteered to become subjects, the west shelter had twenty-nine percent barrier integrity left. Charles Marrow opened the registration queue. Jace closed it.

Liam made the north-block decision because Jace was too far away to make it in time. He could pull Charge from the west brace and save the north gate, or hold the west reserve and trust Benjamin's group to finish evacuation. Either choice left somebody exposed. There was no hidden clause and no clean third route.

When Jace reached the gate, Liam did not apologize for choosing the west reserve. He explained it. Seventeen trapped west, nine north, one failing conduit, no time. Jace wanted somebody to blame because numbers were easier to hate than a body. Liam refused to give him that relief.

"I'd make the same call again," he said. His voice broke on again. "I just wish he wasn't the one who paid it."

He chose to hold the west reserve because more people were trapped there. Benjamin died on the north side. Later, Liam would be able to explain the math. That did not make the body lighter. Jace arrived to a consequence created by someone else's authority, freely delegated and honestly used. Protecting people without owning them had never promised protection from grief.

REGISTRATION QUEUE: SUSPENDED BY CLAIMANT.

Applicants: 12.

Charles looked at him.

"Several of them asked."

"I heard."

"Then on what grounds are you preventing their choice?"

Jace opened Breach Sight. Twelve consent records appeared. Every one carried the same red mark.

ACTIVE DURESS CONDITIONS

Immediate threat to dependent life.

Loss of shelter.

Resource deprivation.

Collective punishment.

Meaningful refusal without penalty: UNAVAILABLE.

CONSENT QUALITY: COMPROMISED.

Jace pushed the panel toward Charles.

"That."

Charles read it.

"They understand the terms."

"Understanding isn't the problem."

Brooklyn stood behind him. Her daughter had begun crying because the blue ceiling was flickering. Brooklyn's voice came out low.

"Jace."

He turned.

"If somebody wants to register, you don't get to save us from our own choice."

The sentence hurt because she had earned the right to say it. Jace looked at the failing shield. Then at her children.

"If they stop threatening the block and you still want it, I'll open the form myself."

Charles said, "The threat is the debt."

"Threat got nicer stationery."

WEST SHELTER

Barrier Integrity: 29% -> 25%.

Failure Threshold: 15%.

Estimated Time: 00:04:12.

Jace reopened the dead-claim inventory. 1,080 Charge-equivalent. Direct burn would produce 205. Not enough. Breach Sight cut deeper. The residue was full of abandoned ownership code. Dead estates. Dissolved claims. Claimants who no longer existed, still dragging legal value behind them like chains attached to graves. One clause stood out.

CROWN TAX ACCEPTABLE PAYMENT

Charge.

Registered yield.

Recognized claim value.

Jace blinked.

"Charles."

"Yes?"

"Dead claims have recognized value."

"Some."

"Tax office accepts them."

"When properly liquidated."

"How properly?"

Charles's silence answered too late.

[HIDDEN RESOURCE PATH DISCOVERED]

DEAD-CLAIM REFINING

Convert abandoned claim residue into nonliving Charge while preserving no active owner.

Current Skill: LOCKED.

Breach Sight Contract/Title Seam.

Jace selected yes.

[SKILL UNLOCKED]

Dead-Claim Refining Lv. 1.

Proficiency: 0%.

Efficiency: 31%.

Inheritance Risk: 18%.

He fed the first hundred units into the Spire. The dead claims screamed. Not voices. Permissions.

OWN.

REGISTER.

COLLECT.

INHERIT.

Jace marked each ownership return as it surfaced.

ERROR MARK.

REFUSE INHERITANCE.

REFUSE DEBT TRANSFER.

REFUSE SUBJECT CONVERSION.

One hundred raw units burned down to thirty-seven clean Charge.

Dead-Claim Refining: 0% -> 9%.

Efficiency: 31% -> 37%.

Safe Zone Reserve: 0 -> 37.

WEST SHELTER: 25% -> 28%.

Brooklyn let out a breath.

"Again."

Jace did.

Raw residue: 980 -> 680.

Usable Charge gained: 126.

Dead-Claim Refining: 9% -> 22%.

Inheritance Risk: 18% -> 11%.

West Shelter: 28% -> 34%.

The old claims left memories behind as they burned. A doorway on a world with green rain. A hand signing away a farm. A woman kneeling because the shield above her children required a legal owner. Then the images were gone. Jace swallowed blood.

Corruption Load: 96% -> 97%.

Eleanor stepped closer.

"Stop."

"No."

"Your Corruption just moved."

"Noticed."

"You are refining dead ownership structures through your own identity."

"Busy."

He burned another three hundred units.

Safe Zone Reserve: 163 -> 281.

Dead-Claim Refining: 22% -> 36%.

CROWN TAX EXPLOIT DETECTED

Retired claim value recognized as taxable nonliving yield.

Glitch Tax reduction: 8%.

Crown Tax Outstanding: 1,714 -> 1,276.

WEST SHELTER: 34% -> 39%.

People cheered.

Then the north sector failed.

No warning came first.

The Crown shifted collection priority to the block Jace was not feeding.

NORTH SECTOR

Barrier Integrity: 58% -> 19%.

James shouted through the territory channel.

"North brace is carrying everything!"

Benjamin was already running. He had been moving steel between sectors since the tax began. Now he reached the north gate as the blue light above it folded inward. A support beam snapped. The old storefront facade leaned toward the evacuation corridor.

"OUT!"

Benjamin shoved the steel gate upward with both hands. Families poured beneath it. Brooklyn grabbed her children and ran toward the north interior because the west route had become the safer side.

"Benjamin!"

"Keep moving!"

The last family crossed. The shield went dark.

NORTH SECTOR

Barrier Integrity: 19% -> 0%.

SAFE ZONE BLOCK LOST.

The building came down. Jace heard the impact through the Anchor. He did not hear Benjamin afterward. James reached the rubble first. Then Brooklyn. She dropped beside a twisted section of gate. One hand was visible beneath it. Still. No System label appeared until Eleanor walked closer.

Benjamin Ortiz.

Status: DECEASED.

Cause:

Structural collapse following Crown Tax protection withdrawal.

Administrative attribution:

Claimant refused available subject registration.

Eleanor's face changed. Charles looked at the body. His hand hovered over the assessment record. One second. Two. Then he signed it.

CROWN TAX COLLECTION EVENT

Protected Population: 231 -> 230.

Registered Subjects: 0.

Pending Overflow Experience: 70,000 -> 79,000.

Dead-Claim Refining Lv. 1: 36%.

Glitch Tax Reduction: 8%.

Permanent Casualty: 1.

Eleanor opened the audit ledger. Her voice was barely audible.

"Evidence entered."

AUDIT EVIDENCE ADDED:

CLAIMANT REFUSAL RESULTED IN TERRITORY LOSS.
