Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 89: Civilian Designation: Ours
Emily Ross did not point the camera at Jace. She pointed it at Harold. The old man lay beneath a blue medical light with an oxygen tube under his nose and a System label over his bed.
Emily kept filming after the designation changed because she wanted the record to show who had spoken first. Ours could become ownership in the wrong archive. She made Benjamin explain on camera that he meant membership, not possession.
Avery wrote the phrase exactly as Benjamin meant it: community membership, no ownership claim. Emily made him repeat it on camera. They were learning to protect ordinary language before the System could weaponize it later.
LOW-VALUE DEPENDENT
Projected Labor Output: 0.
Taxable Yield: 0.
Strategic Value: MINIMAL.
Protection Priority: REDUCED.
Harold squinted at the words.
"Worked forty-three years."
Emily kept the camera steady.
"Doing what?"
"Elevators."
"Built them?"
"Fixed them when people like you pressed every button and blamed the building."
A laugh escaped the nurse beside him. Harold smiled. The label did not change. Emily lowered the camera. That bothered her more than if it had. The System could hear Harold speak. It could measure his oxygen use, remaining life expectancy, labor output, Charge consumption, and every resource required to keep him breathing. It simply did not care about the part where he had spent forty-three years making sure strangers reached the floor they wanted.
Another panel appeared in front of Emily.

"Story of my life."
She selected REFUSE.

Jace saw the update from his stretcher.
"That seems expensive for journalism."
Emily turned the camera toward him at last.
"You spent Charge because the System said these people weren't worth spending it on."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Jace looked at Harold, then at the child two beds down whose ventilator had restarted when he redirected the emergency pool.
"Needed it."
"That isn't an answer."
"Worked for the shield."
Something loosened in Emily's face. Benjamin Ortiz came through the medical entrance carrying another steel brace with James's crew. The noble designation still hung over Jace.
LOWEST KING.
Unofficial Recognition: 14%.
Noble Meaning:
Ruler of low-value lives.
Benjamin read it.
"Still stupid."
Emily raised the camera.
"Why?"
"Because they're saying lowest like these people are below somebody."
He set down the brace. Harold lifted two fingers from the blanket.
"I'm below most people right now."
Benjamin pointed at him.
"See? He gets jokes. Value already up."
Harold coughed hard enough that the joke disappeared. Benjamin's face tightened. Emily kept recording.
"Yesterday you kept calling Jace king."
"Yeah."
"Do you still mean it?"
Benjamin looked across the shelter. At Jace. At the barrier. At the people carrying water, food, medicine, metal, paper records.
"No."
The System reacted.
UNOFFICIAL TITLE PRESSURE: DECREASING.
Benjamin continued before the panel finished.
"I mean, not like I meant it before."
Emily waited.
"I wanted somebody in charge because everything was falling apart. Felt easier if one guy had the answer."
He rubbed grime off one knuckle.
"Turns out he mostly says no to the easy answers."
Jace lifted his head.
"Strong endorsement."
Benjamin ignored him.
Emily asked, "Then what is he?"
Benjamin glanced at the LOWEST KING designation.
"He's ours."
Several panels flashed. Jace's expression changed.
"That wording has problems."
Benjamin frowned.
"What?"
"I've spent a lot of blood arguing against possession."
Emily lowered the camera slightly. Benjamin understood.
"No. Not ours like property."
He pointed around the room.
"Ours like he's in here too."
That landed differently. The System tried to parse it.

Emily looked up.
"The shield understood him."
Eleanor stood outside the medical entrance, white clothes untouched by the dust around her.
"The System understood a measurable reputation event."
Emily turned the camera toward her.
"Same thing?"
"No."
"Difference?"
Eleanor looked at Benjamin.
"Meaning can be recorded without being correctly understood."
Emily held the shot.
"Good. Say that again."
Eleanor did not. The crisis quest updated.

The panel stalled at twenty-four. Then Harold reached up and removed the oxygen tube long enough to speak.
"Hey, kid."
Jace looked over. Harold pointed toward the LOWEST KING title.
"If that's what they call somebody who keeps the useless old bastard breathing, keep the name."
Emma immediately put the oxygen back. Harold glared at her. She ignored him professionally. The System recalculated.
CIVILIAN MEANING CONFIRMED BY DESIGNATED LOW-VALUE DEPENDENT.
Candidate Progress: 24% -> 25%.
THRESHOLD REACHED.
The LOWEST KING label remained. Something new appeared beneath it, cleaner and darker than the noble insult.
