Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 88: The Lowest King
The bounty turned Jace's blood into social mobility. That was apparently funny on the Dyson Ring. The first insult arrived thirty seconds later.
Benjamin treated Lowest King as a joke until people began using it like a promise. Then he made Jace listen to what the title meant from the ground: the person expected to show up for the jobs nobody important wanted. That definition carried less glory and more work than any throne Jace had seen.
LOWEST KING.
Another House repeated it.
Then another.
KING OF RUBBLE.
REFUGEE CROWN.
SOVEREIGN OF ZERO PROPERTY.
The phrases moved through the noble network faster than the bounty had.
NOBLE REPUTATION EVENT

Protected Population: 231.
Noble Valuation: NEGLIGIBLE.
Unofficial Designation: LOWEST KING.
Jace read it from his stretcher.
"They finally found a title I can afford."
Eleanor did not answer. The classification hearing had not resumed, exactly. Protocol CROWN still blocked its verdict. Instead, the audit had found something it was allowed to do. Valuation.

Jace stopped reading.
"Define low-value."
Eleanor's face tightened before the panel answered.

Emma was already moving toward them.
"No."
The System did not care.

Low-Value Sector Support: 100% -> 42%.
Medical Wing Support: 71% -> 38%.
Charge preserved for succession-critical structures.
A cry came from the east shelter. The barrier above the medical section thinned until daylight showed through it. James shouted for crews. Emma ran. Jace tried to sit up. Eleanor stepped toward him.
"Do not."
"You just cut protection over the injured."
"I did not select the allocation."
"Can you stop it?"
Her silence answered. A woman Jace had not seen before moved through the medical shelter carrying a battered handheld camera in one hand and a notebook in the other. She stopped beside an older man whose oxygen line had just lost power.
"What is your name?"
"Harold."
"Last name?"
"Ross. No relation, probably."
She wrote it down. Then she turned the camera toward the System panel over his bed.
LOW-VALUE DEPENDENT.
Her hand paused over the display.
FIELD CONTACT IDENTIFIED
Emily Ross.
Occupation: Documentarian.
Current Function: Witness Recorder.
System Authority: NONE.
Emily looked directly into the camera.
"The System has reduced protection to this shelter because the people inside it are classified as producing less value than they cost."
Eleanor looked at her.
"Recording is permitted."
Emily lowered the camera.
"I wasn't asking."
The east barrier dropped again.
Effective Medical Protection: 38% -> 31%.

Jace selected the second option. Eleanor looked at him.
"You did not finish reading."
"Didn't need the sequel."

Safe Zone Reserve: 734 -> 614.
Medical Support: 31% -> 67%.
Crownline Defense: 100% -> 82%.

The barrier above the medical shelter thickened. An elderly woman who had been exposed to the sky disappeared beneath blue light again. A child's ventilator restarted. Nobody applauded. They were too busy working. Benjamin Ortiz came running from the western shelter with a brace over one shoulder. He looked at the noble title hovering over Jace.
LOWEST KING.
Benjamin laughed.
"That supposed to be an insult?"
Emily turned the camera toward him.
"Why wouldn't it be?"
Benjamin dropped the brace beside James's crew.
"They're saying he's lowest because of who he protects."
He pointed toward the medical shelter.
"The kids. Old folks. People who can't fight. People who don't have titles."
Emily kept recording. Benjamin looked at Jace.
"I called you king before because I was scared and wanted somebody else to make decisions."
Jace remembered. Benjamin had used the word until Grace nearly beat it out of him with vocabulary. Benjamin glanced at the noble projections.
"But if that's what their kings don't protect..."
He shrugged.
"Maybe lowest is better."
The System heard him.
UNOFFICIAL TITLE PRESSURE
Designation: LOWEST KING.
Source Meaning Conflict Detected.

Ruler of low-value lives.

THE GLITCH KING: CANDIDATE

Emily slowly lowered the camera. The panel over Harold Ross still called him low-value. She opened her notebook and drew a line through the phrase.
Beside it, she wrote:
HAROLD ROSS.
NEEDS OXYGEN.
LIKES TERRIBLE COFFEE.
HAS A DAUGHTER IN QUEENS.
Jace watched her.
"What does that change?"
Emily looked at the System label, then at what she had written.
"Maybe nothing yet."
She raised the camera again.
"But now it has to erase both versions."
Another section of medical shelter flashed.
Emergency Charge available: 40.
Three civilians had been moved into a corridor the audit valued at zero because none possessed a title, claim, labor registration, or measurable yield.
PROTECTION REQUEST
Civilians: 3.
System Value: MINIMAL.
Charge Required: 18.
Strategic Recommendation: DECLINE.
Jace selected APPROVE.
Emergency Charge: 40 -> 22.
Crownline Defense: 82% -> 79%.
Noble Reputation: -9 -> -12.
Civilian Reputation: +14 -> +19.
LOWEST KING
Unofficial Recognition: 9% -> 14%.
Benjamin read the change.
"See?"
Jace looked at the three people disappearing beneath restored blue light.
"Still hate the name."
"You hate most of your names."
"Fair."
Above the Safe Zone, the noble projections mocked a king who owned nothing. Below them, Emily kept recording the people they had decided were worth nothing. Jace spent what little unrestricted Charge the audit had left him on the lives the hierarchy valued least.
The insult stopped belonging only to the nobles.
