Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 75: Registered Property: Zero
The shield stopped shaking at thirty-nine percent. The reserve did not.
Avery added a column the System did not have: people who had refused and remained protected anyway. The number mattered because a voluntary network could fake freedom if every refusal quietly lost benefits. So far, the column stayed intact.
SAFE ZONE STATUS
Barrier Integrity: 39%.
Charge Reserve: 323.
Population: 231.
Registered Property: 0.
Free Claims: 5 active / 9 pending review.
Vane Command Integrity: 31%.
Warden Remnant Health: 1,380/2,700.
The first three vault contacts had completed Consent Protocol while the Warden's blast crossed the barrier. Three more people the System could protect without calling them property. The remaining requests were messier.
NO.
WAIT.
I NEED THE TERMS AGAIN.
CAN I LEAVE LATER?
WHO PAYS FOR THIS?
Abigail wrote every answer exactly as given. Avery stood over her shoulder with the continuity ledger open.
"We can shorten those to pending."
Abigail stopped writing.
"No."
"It would only be on the battle dashboard."
"No."
Avery looked at the Warden advancing through the street.
"We have a command network rebuilding every second. I need data I can compare."
"They gave different answers."
"They are all unresolved."
"They are not unresolved the same way."
The Warden struck the barrier with its lance.
Barrier Integrity: 39% -> 35%.
Reserve: 323 -> 296.
Vane Command Integrity: 31% -> 34%.
Avery flinched but kept her hand on the ledger.
"If we cannot summarize, we cannot coordinate."
Abigail's pencil pressed hard enough to tear the paper.
"If we summarize wrong, the System does it for us."
Neither of them was arguing about handwriting. Avery needed a usable ledger before the next blast. Abigail had spent the last hour watching categories erase the parts of people that made the categories convenient. Avery crouched beside her.
If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
"Then give me a way to keep the difference without losing the count."
Abigail looked down at the page. She added symbols. YES became a circle. NO became a square. WAIT stayed blank. Questions received a line beside the name. Avery copied the system into her digital ledger.
WITNESS LEDGER
Active consent: 5.
Explicit refusal: 2.
Pending decision: 5.
Questions unresolved: 2.
No response converted automatically.
Avery exhaled.
"That works."
Abigail resumed writing. The System noticed.
CONSENT PROTOCOL REFINEMENT
Grouped status may be tracked without merging individual decisions.
Witness-source integrity: 0% -> 17%.
Free Claim Network Stability: 22% -> 31%.
The Warden fired again. This time Jace did not strengthen the whole barrier. He opened Breach Sight on the lance.
PURGE LANCE LV. 4
Damage routing:
Physical barrier: 42%.
Claim architecture: 58%.
Preferred target: Central claimant.
Weakness: Distributed protection forces repeated target validation.
"Let it hit the network," Jace said.
Seraphina looked at him.
"That may break the pending claims."
"Only active ones."
"You have five."
"Five can say no after."
The System heard the statement.
FREE CLAIM NETWORK
Emergency defense participation request.
Noah Venn: YES.
Lily Morgan: YES.
Vault Contact 1: YES.
Vault Contact 2: NO.
Vault Contact 3: YES.
Jace stared at the fourth response. Then excluded it.
Participants: 4.
The Warden fired. Gold light entered the shield and split four ways. Each active participant carried only the relationship check, not the damage. The burden routed through the Anchor and physical Safe Zone supports.
Barrier Integrity: 35% -> 32%.
Charge Reserve: 296 -> 271.
Warden Target Validation: 100% -> 46%.
Command Integrity: 34% -> 23%.
The Warden staggered. Michael Foster did not wait for a command.
"Carter, knee."
The tow cable snapped tight. Carter's rig pulled the Warden's damaged leg sideways while Luke cleared the street. The machine fell against James's reinforced barricade.
Warden Health: 1,380 -> 824.
Armor Integrity: 41% -> 24%.
Mila stood beside Abigail, holding the notebook when Abigail's hand cramped.
"Do I count as a witness?" Mila asked.
Abigail looked at her.
"Were you here?"
"Yes."
"Do you remember it?"
Mila glanced at the Warden.
"I'm trying not to."
Abigail took the notebook back.
"That still counts."
Luna suddenly grabbed the wall.
"The command is older than the machine."
Breach Sight followed her attention. Nineteen command copies still pulsed across Warden salvage, the dead battery, the captured core, and abandoned System infrastructure outside the block. Destroying the chassis would not end the order. The Warden pushed itself upright.
Health: 824/2,700.
Charge: 201/700.
Command Integrity: 23%.
Purge Lance Cooldown: 00:09.
Jace opened his unassigned points.
UNASSIGNED ATTRIBUTE POINTS: 18.
UNASSIGNED SKILL POINTS: 7.
Emma had told him not to allocate while Corruption sat at ninety-six percent. That advice had been correct when allocation was optional. Now his body had one Health, Spatial Fracture, and a fight that required him to stay conscious long enough to finish a rule rather than throw himself at another weapon. He committed ten Attribute Points.
Vitality allocation: 6.
Willpower allocation: 4.
Unassigned Attribute Points: 18 -> 8.
DERIVED EFFECTS
Maximum Health: increased.
Physical-collapse threshold: improved.
Corruption resistance check: improved.
Current Health: 1 -> 7.
Spatial Fracture: UNCHANGED.
He spent two Skill Points on Consent Protocol stabilization.
Unassigned Skill Points: 7 -> 5.
Consent Protocol Stability: 31% -> 46%.
Free Claim maintenance efficiency: +8%.
Emma's voice came through the territory channel.
"I am still yelling at you later."
"Healthier for it."
The Warden raised its lance. Lily opened her claim link voluntarily. Noah did the same. Two vault contacts joined. Then another. The network did not wait for Jace to ask.
FREE CLAIM DEFENSE
Voluntary participants: 8.
Command target certainty: 46% -> 19%.
Seraphina used the Free Accord to fracture the Warden's claim on its own last valid order. Michael pulled the knee again. Carter reversed the tow rig. The Warden hit the barricade chest first.
Health: 824 -> 0.
[ENCOUNTER COMPLETE]
Warden Remnant chassis defeated.
Overflow Experience gained: 42,000.
Overflow Experience: 295,200 -> 337,200.
Loot pending until command network termination.
Vane Cleanup Order: ACTIVE.
Command Integrity: 23% -> 11%.
The body stopped moving. The nineteen copies did not. They tried to classify every voluntary defense action as evidence of one claimant commanding subjects. Abigail lifted her notebook. Avery lifted the matching ledger. Two hundred thirty-one people stood behind a shield built from refusals the System had recorded as errors. The classification failed.
SYSTEM PRECEDENT REVIEW INITIATED.
