Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 74: Safe Zone Established

  • Next Chapter

The claim activated and the Safe Zone changed its mind about Lily. Blue light crossed her body without bending around it. The human-shaped hole vanished.

The network's first success looked messy from inside. Different people accepted at different speeds, some routes carried more load than others, and two volunteers withdrew when the shield shook. The System called the pattern inefficient. James called it information and moved the braces to where the strain actually was.

Grace recorded the withdrawals beside the acceptances. Jace wanted both kept. A network that remembered only successful consent would eventually teach the same lie as every other registry.

FREE CLAIM NETWORK

Noah Venn: ACTIVE.

Lily Morgan: ACTIVE.

Living Free Claims: 2.

Registered Property: 0.

Consent Protocol: ACTIVE.

Safe Zone Barrier: 30%.

Reserve: 308 Charge.

The relief lasted five seconds. Then every piece of Warden salvage in the block began transmitting at once. Owen's armor plates lit beneath the northern braces. The captured Warden Core rolled across the floor where Luke had left it. The dead cleanup battery outside the west entrance raised its cannon despite having no emergency power remaining.

VANE CLEANUP ORDER

Distributed Copies: 19.

Command Integrity: 37%.

Primary Objective: Delete contaminated evidence.

Protected Witnesses Detected: 231.

Jace stared at the number.

"Population went up."

A woman near the throne answered before the System did.

"Twenty-seven people came up from the vault while everyone was distracted."

She had a city ID clipped to the remains of her jacket and three paper ledgers under one arm.

FIELD CONTACT IDENTIFIED

Avery Cole.

Former occupation: Municipal Data Analyst.

Current function: Continuity Ledger Coordinator.

Claimant relationship: NONE.

"Two hundred four aboveground before the vault transfer," Avery continued. "Twenty-seven medically stable heirs moved up. Two hundred thirty-one current Safe Zone population. The other vault occupants remain under preservation support and should not be counted as residents unless they choose it."

The System changed nothing. A younger girl stood beside Avery holding a spiral notebook against her chest. She had written names across the cover. Not categories. Names.

Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.

FIELD CONTACT IDENTIFIED

Abigail Wren.

Current function: Witness Trainee.

Recorded identities: 43.

System-recognized authority: NONE.

Abigail looked at Jace's panel.

"It says witnesses."

"Yes."

"It counted people it never asked for names."

"Yes."

She opened the notebook.

"Then I'm keeping my count."

Something gold moved outside. A second Warden stepped from the ruined subway entrance. This one was older than the chassis they had destroyed. Half its helmet was missing. Black cables hung from its chest, and one leg dragged through the street.

[TARGET ANALYSIS]

Designation: WARDEN REMNANT.

Level: 174.

Health: 1,380/2,700.

Charge: 404/700.

Armor Integrity: 41%.

Command Integrity: 37%.

Primary Weapon: Purge Lance Lv. 4.

Cleanup Order: VANE / DISTRIBUTED.

Weakness: Command copies require network agreement before final deletion.

Behind Avery, two freed heirs reacted differently. The first, a thin woman with dark hair cut unevenly at her jaw, pressed both hands against her temples.

"The street remembers this."

FIELD CONTACT IDENTIFIED

Luna Ash.

Classification: Freed Heir.

Function: Memory-Sensitive.

Anchor Residue Response: ACTIVE.

The younger heir beside her was maybe thirteen. She wore an oversized coat and kept one hand wrapped around the strap of a small canvas bag.

FIELD CONTACT IDENTIFIED

Mila Kestrel.

Classification: Freed Heir.

Age Classification: Adolescent.

Ownership Status: NONE.

Mila looked at the Warden.

"Is it going to put us back?"

"No," Abigail said.

The answer came too quickly. Mila noticed.

"You don't know that."

Abigail swallowed.

"No. I don't."

She opened the notebook anyway.

"But I can write down that you were here before it tries."

The Warden raised its lance.

[FULL TERRITORY BATTLE DASHBOARD]

Safe Zone Population: 231.

Registered Property: 0.

Free Claims: 2.

Barrier Integrity: 30%.

Charge Reserve: 308.

Free Accord Integrity: 54%.

Seraphina Noble Reserve: 0.

Anchor Count: 1/4.

Warden Remnant Health: 1,380/2,700.

Vane Command Integrity: 37%.

Inspection Agent: HELD ABOVE TERRITORY.

Main Threat: Cleanup Order.

Jace opened the Charge-well route.

TRANSIT NODE A

Available Environmental Charge: 86.

Contamination: 38%.

Safe usable draw under current filter: 41 Charge.

He routed the forty-one into the shield.

Reserve: 308 -> 349.

Barrier Integrity: 30% -> 34%.

The Warden fired. The lance hit the Safe Zone and spread into seven separate gold lines, each searching for a witness classification. Seraphina had no Noble Reserve left. She still stepped beside the barrier.

FREE ACCORD

Seraphina contribution available:

Claimcraft only.

Health substitution: OPTIONAL.

She selected claimcraft without Health.

"Do not feed it more of you," Jace said.

"I did not ask permission."

"Good."

Her hands moved. Instead of strengthening the wall, she redirected the seven targeting lines into the Free Claim records. The Warden paused.

TARGET CONFLICT

Noah Venn:

Protected.

Unowned.

Witness.

Lily Morgan:

Protected.

Unowned.

Contaminated.

Witness.

Deletion authorized by Vane Order.

Deletion blocked by active consensual protection.

Command conflict unresolved.

Luna gasped.

"There are more."

She pointed toward the vault route. Twelve preservation records flickered inside the command network, freed heirs whose old ownership seals had cracked but whose bodies still depended on System support.

FREE CLAIM COMPATIBILITY DETECTED

Eligible living contacts: 12.

Consent Protocol available.

Mila looked toward the vault stair.

"They get to choose?"

Grace answered from behind the medical line.

"They have to."

The Warden stepped closer.

Command Integrity: 37% -> 42%.

The distributed copies were rebuilding agreement. Abigail wrote faster. Name. Choice. Relationship. Object carried. Who witnessed it. Avery saw the pattern.

"The System keeps calling these illegal mechanics separate exceptions."

Jace looked at the growing ledger.

"They're not separate anymore."

One by one, consent requests went down into the vault. No automatic acceptance. No mass command. Twelve individual panels. The Warden raised its weapon again while the answers began returning.

YES.

NO.

YES.

WAIT.

YES.

The shield shook as each choice entered the same broken architecture. A pattern the System had treated as an error began repeating.

Safe Zone Barrier: 34% -> 39%.

Command Integrity: 42% -> 31%.

The Warden fired into a network that no longer had one owner to target. The blast broke across the blue shield and vanished into thirteen different voluntary routes.

The shield stabilized with hundreds protected and no one registered as property.
